Abstract

In this paper, we propose two construction methods for binary and nonbinary quantum stabilizer codes based on symmetric matrices. In the first construction, we use the identity and symmetric matrices to generate parity-check matrices that satisfy the symplectic inner product (SIP) for the construction of quantum stabilizer codes. In the second construction, we modify the first construction to generate parity-check matrices based on the Calderbank–Shor–Stean structure for the construction of quantum stabilizer codes. The binary and nonbinary quantum stabilizer codes whose parameters achieve equality of the quantum singleton bound are investigated with the code lengths ranging from 4 to 12.

Efficient Quantum Stabilizer Codes: LDPC and LDPC-Convolutional Constructions

Peiyu Tan, Jing Li

Existing quantum stabilizer codes constructed from the classic binary codes exclusively belong to the special subclass of Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) codes. This paper fills in the gap by proposing five systematic constructions for non-CSS stabilizer codes, the first four of which are based on classic binary quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and last on classic binary LDPC-convolutional codes. These new constructions exploit structured sparse graphs, make essential use of simple and powerful coding techniques including concatenation, rotation and scrambling, and generate rich classes of codes with a wide range of lengths and rates. We derive the sufficient, and in some cases also the necessary, conditions for each construction to satisfy the general symplectic inner product (SIP) condition, and develop practical decoder algorithms for these codes. The resulting codes are the first classes of non-CSS quantum LDPC codes and non-CSS quantum convolutional codes rooted from classic binary codes (rather than codes in GF(4)), and some of them perform as well as or better than the existing quantum codes.

New Constructions of Quantum Stabilizer Codes Based on Difference Sets

Duc Manh Nguyen, Sunghwan Kim

In this paper, new conditions on parameters in difference sets are derived to satisfy symplectic inner product, and new constructions of quantum stabilizer codes are proposed from the conditions. The conversion of the difference sets into parity-check matrices is first explained. Then, the proposed code construction is composed of three steps, which are to choose the generators of quantum stabilizer code, to determine the quantum stabilizer groups, and to determine subspace codewords with large minimum distance. The quantum stabilizer codes with various length are also presented to explain the practicality of the code construction. The proposed design can be applied to quantum stabilizer code construction based on combinatorial design.

Quantum XYZ Stabilizer Codes

Alessio Baldelli, Davide Orsucci, Francisco Lázaro +1 more

Stabilizer codes are often constructed within the Calderbank--Shor--Steane (CSS) framework, where two mutually orthogonal binary classical codes define $X$ and $Z$-type stabilizer generators. While this structure is algebraically convenient, additional non-CSS constraints may help suppress low-weight logical operators and improve decoding performance in the finite-length regime. We thus introduce quantum XYZ stabilizer codes, whose parity-check matrix (PCM) is built from three pairwise orthogonal binary PCMs associated with $X$-, $Y$-, and $Z$-type stabilizer generators. A nontrivial point is that an XYZ code instance is not automatically genuinely non-CSS: the same stabilizer group may admit a CSS generating set. We characterize this collapse, obtaining algebraic and rank conditions for deciding when the $Y$-type checks are redundant and when they define genuinely non-CSS stabilizer constraints. We also derive upper and lower bounds on the quantum minimum distance, including bounds for mixed Pauli logical operators. The novel framework includes a known non-CSS topological code, namely the XYZ$^2$ hexagonal code, and yields also sparse finite-length quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) constructions from intersecting-subset and quasi-dyadic code families. Simulations under depolarizing code-capacity noise and quaternary belief propagation decoding show that the proposed XYZ qLDPC instances can outperform representative CSS qLDPC instances with similar finite-length parameters.

A novel construction for quantum stabilizer codes based on binary formalism

Duc Manh Nguyen, Sunghwan Kim

In this research, we propose a novel construction of quantum stabilizer code based on a binary formalism. First, from any binary vector of even length, we generate the parity-check matrix of the quantum code from a set composed of elements from this vector and its relations by shifts via subtraction and addition. We prove that the proposed matrices satisfy the condition constraint for the construction of quantum codes. Finally, we consider some constraint vectors which give us quantum stabilizer codes with various dimensions and a large minimum distance with code length from six to twelve digits.

New Classes of LDPC Stabilizer Codes Using Ideas from Matrix Scrambling

P. Tan, Jie Li

This paper proposes efficient construction of new classes of quantum low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes through quasi-cyclic matrices, symmetric matrices and scrambling matrices. Unlike many of the existing quantum LDPC codes, the proposed construction is based on classic binary codes rather than quaternary codes, targets the general stabilizer formalism rather than the special CSS formalism, employs systematic approaches rather than computer search, and generates a rich class of codes of different rates and lengths rather than a single code. Simulations demonstrate that these new codes outperform the existing non-CSS LDPC stabilizer codes reported in literature.

Upper bounds on minimum distance of nonbinary quantum stabilizer codes

Santosh Kumar

The most popular class of quantum error correcting codes is stabilizer codes. Binary quantum stabilizer codes have been well studied, and Calderbank, Rains, Shor and Sloane (July 1998) have constructed a table of upper bounds on the minimum distance of these codes using linear programming methods. However, not much is known in the case of nonbinary stabilizer codes. In this thesis, we establish a bridge between selforthogonal classical codes over the finite field containing q2 elements and quantum codes, extending and unifying previous work by Matsumoto and Uyematsu (2000), Ashikhmin and Knill (November 2001), Kim and Walker (2004). We construct a table of upper bounds on the minimum distance of the stabilizer codes using linear programming methods that are tighter than currently known bounds. Finally, we derive code construction techniques that will help us find new codes from existing ones. All these results help us to gain a better understanding of the theory of nonbinary stabilizer codes.
