Abstract

We investigate the interplay of superradiant phase transition (SPT) and energy band physics in an extended Dicke-Hubbard lattice whose unit cell consists of a Dicke model coupled to an atomless cavity. We found in such a periodic lattice the critical point that occurs in a single Dicke model becomes a critical region that is periodically changing with the wavenumber $k$. In the weak-coupling normal phase of the system we observed a flat band and its corresponding localization that can be controlled by the ground-state SPT. Our work builds the connection between flat band physics and SPT, which may fundamentally broaden the regimes of many-body theory and quantum optics.

Modulation-based superradiant phase transition in the strong-coupling regime

Jin‐Feng Huang, Lin Tian

The Dicke model can exhibit quantum phase transition between the normal and the superradiant phases when the strength of the light-matter coupling exceeds the ultrastrong-coupling regime. However, it is challenging to observe this phase transition in practical systems due to limited coupling strength or finite two-photon ${A}^{2}$ terms. Here we show that by applying a periodic modulation to the frequency of the two-level systems in a standard Dicke model in the strong-coupling regime, an anisotropic Dicke model with tunable rotating and counter-rotating terms in the ultrastrong-coupling regime can be achieved. We calculate the ground state and the excitation spectrum of this model in terms of the modulation parameters. Our result shows that the superradiant phases can be observed in cavity- or circuit-quantum electrodynamics systems with strong coupling.

Superradiant Quantum Phase Transition in Open Systems: System-Bath Interaction at the Critical Point

Daniele Lamberto, Gabriele Orlando, Salvatore Savasta

The occurrence of a second-order quantum phase transition in the Dicke model is a well-established feature. On the contrary, a comprehensive understanding of the corresponding open system, particularly in the proximity of the critical point, remains elusive. When approaching the critical point, the system inevitably enters first the system-bath ultrastrong coupling regime and finally the deepstrong coupling regime, causing the failure of usual approximations adopted to describe open quantum systems. We study the interaction of the Dicke model with bosonic bath fields in the absence of additional approximations, which usually relies on the weakness of the system-bath coupling. We find that the critical point is not affected by the interaction with the environment. Moreover, the interaction with the environment is not able to affect the system ground-state condensates in the superradiant phase, whereas the bath fields are i n f e c t e d by the system and acquire macroscopic occupations. The obtained reflection spectra display lineshapes which become increasingly asymmetric, both in the normal and superradiant phases, when approaching the critical point.

Superradiant quantum phase transition in a circuit QED system: a revisit from a fully microscopic point of view

Dazhi Xu, Yuan Gao, Chuan Sun

In order to examine whether or not the quantum phase transition of Dicke type exists in realistic systems, we revisit the model setup of the superconducting circuit QED from a microscopic many-body perspective based on the BCS theory with pseudo-spin presentation. By deriving the Dicke model with the correct charging terms from the minimum coupling principle, it is shown that the circuit QED system can exhibit superradiant quantum phase transition in the limit N\rightarrow\infty. The critical point could be reached at easiness by adjusting the extra parameters, the ratio of Josephson capacitance C_{J} to gate capacitance C_{g}, as well as the conventional one, the ratio of Josephson energy E_{J} to charging energy E_{C}.

Quantum Phases of a Multimode Bosonic Field Coupled to Flat Electronic Bands

Simone De Liberato, Cristiano Ciuti

We investigate the quantum phases of systems in which a multimode bosonic field is coupled to the transitions between two flat electronic bands. In the literature, such systems are usually modeled using a single or multimode Dicke model, leading to the prediction of superradiant quantum phase transitions for large enough couplings. We show that the physics of these systems is remarkably richer than previously expected, with the system continuously interpolating between a Dicke model exhibiting a superradiant quantum phase transition and a quantum Rabi model with no phase transition.

Superradiant phase transition in the ultrastrong-coupling regime of the two-photon Dicke model

Louis Garbe, I. L. Egusquiza, E. Solano +4 more

The controllability of current quantum technologies allows one to implement spin-boson models where two-photon couplings are the dominating terms of light-matter interaction. In this case, when the coupling strength becomes comparable with the characteristic frequencies, a spectral collapse can take place, i.e., the discrete system spectrum can collapse into a continuous band. Here, we analyze the thermodynamic limit of the two-photon Dicke model, which describes the interaction of an ensemble of qubits with a single bosonic mode. We find that there exists a parameter regime where two-photon interactions induce a superradiant phase transition, before the spectral collapse occurs. Furthermore, we extend the mean-field analysis by considering second-order quantum fluctuation terms, in order to analyze the low-energy spectrum and compare the critical behavior with the one-photon case.
