Abstract

The scaled Rényi information plays a significant role in evaluating the performance of information processing tasks by virtue of its connection to the error exponent analysis. In quantum information theory, there are three generalizations of the classical Rényi divergence-the Petz's, sandwiched, and log-Euclidean versions, that possess meaningful operational interpretation. The goal of this paper is thus to analyze fundamental properties of scaled Rényi information from a noncommutative measure-theoretic perspective. Firstly, we prove the uniform equicontinuity for all three quantum versions of Rényi information, hence it yields the joint continuity of these quantities in the orders and priors. Secondly, we establish the concavity in the region of s ∈ (-1, 0) for both Petz's and the sandwiched versions. This completes the open questions raised by Holevo, Mosonyi and Ogawa. For the applications, we show that the strong converse exponent in classical-quantum channel coding satisfies a minimax identity. The established concavity is further employed to prove an entropic duality between classical data compression with quantum side information and classical-quantum channel coding, and a Fenchel duality in joint source-channel coding with quantum side information.

Doubly minimized Petz and sandwiched Renyi mutual information: Operational interpretation from binary quantum state discrimination

Laura Burri

The doubly minimized Petz Renyi mutual information of order $α$ is defined as the minimum of the Petz divergence of order $α$ of a given bipartite quantum state relative to all product states. The doubly minimized sandwiched Renyi mutual information is defined analogously, with the Petz divergence replaced by the sandwiched divergence. In this work, we study certain binary quantum state discrimination problems related to correlation detection. We show that the corresponding direct exponent is determined by the doubly minimized Petz Renyi mutual information of order $α\in (1/2,1)$, and that the strong converse exponent is determined by the doubly minimized sandwiched Renyi mutual information of order $α\in (1,\infty)$. This provides an operational interpretation of these types of Renyi mutual information and generalizes previous results for classical probability distributions to the quantum setting. For completeness, we also study the corresponding moderate deviation regime both below and above the threshold, and determine the Stein exponent and the second-order asymptotics.

Relative entropies and their use in quantum information theory

Felix Leditzky

This dissertation investigates relative entropies, also called generalized divergences, and how they can be used to characterize information-theoretic tasks in quantum information theory. The main goal is to further refine characterizations of the optimal rates for quantum source coding, state redistribution, and measurement compression with quantum side information via second order asymptotic expansions and strong converse theorems. The dissertation consists of a mathematical and an information-theoretic part. In the mathematical part, we focus on the $α$-sandwiched Rényi divergence ($α$-SRD). We first investigate the limit $α\to 0$ to determine whether this recovers the well-known $0$-Rényi relative divergence. We then prove various new results for entropic quantities derived from the $α$-SRD, including dimension bounds and useful bounds in terms of the fidelity between two quantum states. Furthermore, we derive a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for equality in the data processing inequality (viz. monotonicity under quantum operations) for the $α$-SRD, and give applications to entropic bounds. In the information-theoretic part, we first derive the second order asymptotics of visible quantum source coding using a mixed source. For the achievability part, we develop universal quantum source codes achieving a given second order rate for a memoryless source. As a corollary of the main result, we obtain the second order asymptotics of quantum source coding using a single memoryless source. We then prove strong converse theorems for state redistribution (with or without feedback) and measurement compression with quantum side information. The key ingredients in proving these theorems are the aforementioned fidelity bounds on Rényi entropic quantities derived from the $α$-SRD.

Log-Euclidean Rényi Conditional Mutual Information

Roberto Rubboli, Amir Arqand, Mark M. Wilde

Quantum conditional mutual information (QCMI) is a fundamental measure of conditional independence, with central applications throughout quantum information theory and many-body physics. Despite its importance, finding a fully quantum Rényi generalization that satisfies all desirable structural properties has remained an open question. In this work, we introduce a quantum Rényi conditional mutual information possessing these desirable properties: it is monotone under local quantum channels, additive under tensor products, monotone in the Rényi parameter, and converges to the QCMI in the limit $α\to 1$. We establish bounds on this quantity in terms of relative entropies to the Petz-recovered state, showing that it provides a distinct measure of approximate conditional independence. As a consequence, we derive recovery-based upper and lower bounds on the QCMI in terms of quantum generalizations of the Kullback-Leibler divergence, improving upon the best known results in certain regimes. Finally, we establish bounds in terms of relative entropies to the sets of Markov and separable states and derive Rényi chain rules, which appear to be novel even in the classical setting.

Sandwiched Rényi divergence satisfies data processing inequality

Salman Beigi

Sandwiched (quantum) α-Rényi divergence has been recently defined in the independent works of Wilde et al. [“Strong converse for the classical capacity of entanglement-breaking channels,” preprint arXiv:1306.1586 (2013)] and Müller-Lennert et al. [“On quantum Rényi entropies: a new definition, some properties and several conjectures,” preprint arXiv:1306.3142v1 (2013)]. This new quantum divergence has already found applications in quantum information theory. Here we further investigate properties of this new quantum divergence. In particular, we show that sandwiched α-Rényi divergence satisfies the data processing inequality for all values of α > 1. Moreover we prove that α-Holevo information, a variant of Holevo information defined in terms of sandwiched α-Rényi divergence, is super-additive. Our results are based on Hölder's inequality, the Riesz-Thorin theorem and ideas from the theory of complex interpolation. We also employ Sion's minimax theorem.
