Abstract

Quantum computing may be more powerful than classical computing, but it has a radically different programming model. While current languages are in their infancy and future languages are likely to be different, now is a great time for language designers and implementers to try new ideas.

A Survey of Quantum Programming Languages

Quan Do, Hersh Gupta, Xiyuan Cao +5 more

Quantum computing has seen multiple recent breakthroughs and is getting closer to demonstrations of an exponential advantage over classical computing for certain problems. Programmers will require high-level, general-purpose, executable programming languages to express quantum solutions clearly and effectively, and the field has already produced a wide variety of such languages. This paper presents a language classification framework and uses it to survey ten popular quantum programming languages. The findings include conceptual and experimental comparisons that result in a list of challenges for future language design.

The impact of quantum computing on the development of algorithms and software

Natalia Lemesheva, Halyna Antonenko, Petar Halachev +2 more

Introduction: There is a great potential that the quantum computing can change the way of algorithms and software development more than classical computers. Thus, this article will try to focus on how algorithm design and software development can be affected by quantum computing as well as what possibilities could appear when quantum principles are implemented into traditional paradigms. This paper aims at identifying the impact of quantum computing on algorithm and software advancement, through a discussion of essential quantum algorithms, quantum languages, as well as the opportunities and challenges of quantum technologies. Method: An extensive literature review and theoretical investigation was also performed to investigate the foundational concepts of quantum computing and subsequent effects on algorithm and software engineering. Some of the research questions included exploring the contrast between classical and quantum algorithms, reviewing current literature on quantum programming languages, and delving into examples of real-life deployments of quantum algorithms cross numerous domains. Results: This paper shows that quantum computing brings qualitatively new paradigms in the algorithm design and function while the quantum algorithms such as Shor’s and Grover’s perform exponentially faster certain problems. Software development for quantum has brought the need to devise new frameworks of coding in light of probability in quantum circuit. It is also comforting to note that there is still effort being made although in its most embryonic form to create quantum programming languages like Qiskit and Cirq. Some of challenges include quantum decoherence; limited number of quantum hardware; and need for strong error correction processes. Conclusion: While there are currently relatively few quantum algorithms it is believed that the findings in this field have the ability to revolutionize algorithm and software design and subjects like cryptography, optimization and AI. However, trends in quantum computing show that the constraints to computational capabilities are likely to be lifted to allow creativity to develop the most powerful software solutions

Alternation in Quantum Programming: From Superposition of Data to Superposition of Programs

Mingsheng Ying, Nengkun Yu, Yuan Feng

We extract a novel quantum programming paradigm - superposition of programs - from the design idea of a popular class of quantum algorithms, namely quantum walk-based algorithms. The generality of this paradigm is guaranteed by the universality of quantum walks as a computational model. A new quantum programming language QGCL is then proposed to support the paradigm of superposition of programs. This language can be seen as a quantum extension of Dijkstra's GCL (Guarded Command Language). Surprisingly, alternation in GCL splits into two different notions in the quantum setting: classical alternation (of quantum programs) and quantum alternation, with the latter being introduced in QGCL for the first time. Quantum alternation is the key program construct for realizing the paradigm of superposition of programs. The denotational semantics of QGCL are defined by introducing a new mathematical tool called the guarded composition of operator-valued functions. Then the weakest precondition semantics of QGCL can straightforwardly derived. Another very useful program construct in realizing the quantum programming paradigm of superposition of programs, called quantum choice, can be easily defined in terms of quantum alternation. The relation between quantum choices and probabilistic choices is clarified through defining the notion of local variables. We derive a family of algebraic laws for QGCL programs that can be used in program verification, transformations and compilation. The expressive power of QGCL is illustrated by several examples where various variants and generalizations of quantum walks are conveniently expressed using quantum alternation and quantum choice. We believe that quantum programming with quantum alternation and choice will play an important role in further exploiting the power of quantum computing.
