Fase de Gouy em ondas de matéria de estados gaussianos puros e mistos

Abstract

In this thesis, we study theoretical and experimental aspects of the Gouy phase in matter waves. We show that this phase is related to the covariance between position and momentum and can be indirectly extracted from interferometric experiments. Next, we analyze a diffraction experiment with macro-molecules realized by Zeilingers group [1] and we show that the existence of a Gouy phase is compatible with those experimental data. Similar to the Gouy phase for classical electromagnetic waves, it is shown that a beam of matter waves suffers a phase anomaly around the focus of a quantum lens. An experimental proposal to measure this phase is presented with experimental parameters viable to current technology. We hope this work motivates studies of the theoretical problem, open a few years ago, and forexperiments that lead us to an understanding deeper and more realistic of the Gouy phase for mixed states of matter waves and light. At the end, we present our conclusions.

Experimental proposal for measuring the Gouy phase of matter waves

I. G. da Paz, Pablo L. Saldanha, Maria Carolina Nemes +1 more

The Schrödinger equation for an atomic beam predicts that it must have a phase anomaly near the beam waist analogous to the Gouy phase of an electromagnetic beam. We propose here a feasible experiment that allows for direct determination of this anomalous phase using Ramsey interferometry with Rydberg atoms. Possible experimental limitations are discussed, and shown to be completely under control within present-day technology. We also discuss how this finding can open the possibility of using the spatial mode wavefunctions of atoms as q-dits, since the Gouy phase is an essential ingredient for making rotations in the quantum states.

Gouy phase and matter waves

I. G. da Paz, Maria Carolina Nemes, J. G. Peixoto de Faria

We propose an experiment involving atoms and a standing electromagnetic wave in a cavity as a possibility to determine the analogous of Gouy's phase in optics for matter waves. The advantages and short comings of the proposed experiment are analyzed indicating its feasibility at the edge of present day technology.

Gouy Phase for Fullerene Molecules

I. G. da Paz, Maria Carolina Nemes, Carlos Henrique Monken +2 more

We show that the well known geometric phase, the Gouy phase in optics can be defined for in vacuum as well. In particular we show that the underlying physics for the matter waves Gouy phase is the generalized Schroedinger-Robertson uncertainty principle, more specifically, the off diagonal elements of the covariance matrix. Recent experiments involving the diffraction of fullerene molecules and the uncertainty principle are shown to be quantitatively consistent with the existence of a Gouy phase for waves.

Poisson's spot and Gouy phase

I. G. da Paz, Rodolfo Reis Soldati, Luís A. Cabral +2 more

Recently there have been experimental results on Poisson spot matter-wave interferometry followed by theoretical models describing the relative importance of the wave and particle behaviors for the phenomenon. We propose an analytical theoretical model for Poisson's spot with matter waves based on the Babinet principle, in which we use the results for free propagation and single-slit diffraction. We take into account effects of loss of coherence and finite detection area using the propagator for a quantum particle interacting with an environment. We observe that the matter-wave Gouy phase plays a role in the existence of the central peak and thus corroborates the predominantly wavelike character of the Poisson's spot. Our model shows remarkable agreement with the experimental data for deuterium (${\text{D}}_{2}$) molecules.

Matter-wave squeezing from Gouy phase: toward a new tool for quantum technology

Thiago M. S. Oliveira, Lucas S. Marinho, F. C. V. de Brito +2 more

Abstract We investigate the Gouy phase emerging from the time evolution of confined matter waves in a harmonic potential. Specifically, we analyze the quantum dynamics of a Gaussian wavepacket that exhibits position–momentum correlations. By tuning the parameters governing its evolution, we reveal intriguing effects, with a particular focus on squeezing. Notably, during the wavepacket evolution quantum spreading and squeezing processes emerge, giving rise to Gouy phase contributions of π / 4 rad , establishing a clear link between the Gouy phase and a purely quantum phenomenon. Furthermore, the interplay between wavepacket squeezing and one-dimensional spreading leads to a total Gouy phase accumulation of π / 2 rad in an oscillation period. Both squeezing and Gouy phase have individually proven valuable in state engineering and quantum metrology. By demonstrating a direct, controllable relationship between these two fundamental processes, our findings expand the realm of quantum-enhanced technologies, including quantum sensing and precision measurement.
