Abstract

Abstract A protocol for controlling the localization of an electron with a fixed projection of spin between two quantum dots in a material with spin-orbit (SO) interaction is studied. Due to SO coupling, the manipulation of the electron shuttling between both quantum dots also leads to a mixing between spin projections near to the avoided crossing of levels. We use a transitionless quantum driving approach, neglecting SO interaction, to analytically design simple electric and magnetic pulses able to rapidly drive the electron along an adiabatic Landau–Zener manifold. We show that the same fields in the presence of SO interaction can also give a fast high-fidelity transition between the qubit states. The performance of the proposed protocol is assessed in the presence of SO interactions of typical semiconductor materials. It is shown that it provides a fast and efficient spin-conserving method for controlling the electron position in a double quantum dot.

Quantum Control of Hole Spin Qubits in Double Quantum Dots

David Fernández-Fernández, Yue Ban, Gloria Platero

Hole spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising candidates for quantum information processing due to their weak hyperfine coupling to nuclear spins, and to the strong spin-orbit coupling, which allows for rapid operation time. We propose a coherent control on two heavy-hole spin qubits in a double QD by a fast adiabatic driving protocol, which helps to achieve higher fidelities than other experimentally commonly used protocols as linear ramping, $\ensuremath{\pi}$ pulses or Landau-Zener passages. Using fast quasiadiabatic driving via spin-orbit coupling, it is possible to reduce charge noise significantly for qubit manipulation and achieve high robustness for the qubit initialization. We also implement one- and two-qubit gates, in particular, not, cnot, and swaplike gates, of hole spins in a double QD achieving fidelities above $99\mathrm{%}$, exhibiting the capability of hole spins to implement universal gates for quantum computing.

Counter-diabatic driving for fast spin control in a two-electron double quantum dot

Yue Ban, Xi Chen

The techniques of shortcuts to adiabaticity have been proposed to accelerate the "slow" adiabatic processes in various quantum systems with the applications in quantum information processing. In this paper, we study the counter-diabatic driving for fast adiabatic spin manipulation in a two-electron double quantum dot by designing time-dependent electric fields in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. To simplify implementation and find an alternative shortcut, we further transform the Hamiltonian in term of Lie algebra, which allows one to use a single Cartesian component of electric fields. In addition, the relation between energy and time is quantified to show the lower bound for the operation time when the maximum amplitude of electric fields is given. Finally, the fidelity is discussed with respect to noise and systematic errors, which demonstrates that the decoherence effect induced by stochastic environment can be avoided in speeded-up adiabatic control.

Fast adiabatic-like spin manipulation in a two-electron double quantum dot

Yue Ban

We apply the transitionless quantum driving method to control the electron spin of a two-electron double quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling by time-dependent electric fields. The $x$ and $y$ components of applied electric fields in each dot are designed to achieve fast adiabatic-like passage in the nanosecond timescale. To simplify the setup, we can further transform Hamiltonian by z axis to design an alternative speed-up adiabatic passage, without using the applied electric field in $y$ direction.

Shaped electric fields for fast optimal manipulation of electron spin and position in a double quantum dot

We use quantum optimal control theory algorithms to design external electric fields that drive the coupled spin and orbital dynamics of an electron in a double quantum dot, subject to the spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman magnetic fields. We obtain time profiles of multifrequency electric field pulses which increase the rate of spin-flip transitions by several orders of magnitude in comparison with monochromatic fields, where the spin Rabi oscillations were predicted to be very slow. This precise (with fidelity higher than $1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$) and fast (at the time scale of the order of 0.1 ns, comparable with the Zeeman spin rotation and the interdot tunneling time) simultaneous control of the spin and position is achieved while keeping the electron in the four lowest tunneling- and Zeeman-split levels through the duration of the pulse. The proposed algorithms suggest effective applications in spintronics and quantum information devices.

Micromagnet-free operation of electron spin qubits in Si/Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ vertical double quantum dots

Abhikbrata Sarkar, Daniel Loss

We study a vertical double quantum dot (DQD) in a Si/Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$/Si double-well heterostructure for full electrical control of electron Loss-DiVincenzo (LD) spin qubits, using realistic device modeling and numerical simulations. Due to the emerging spin-orbit interaction in the DQD, as well as strain from the gate electrodes, small (percentage range) but finite $g$ tensor variations emerge. In addition, we find a large valley splitting, on the order of $E_v{\sim}250\,μ$eV. As a result, multiple avenues for fast electrical single qubit rotations emerge. An ac electric field gives rise to electric dipole spin resonance (EDSR), while electron spin resonance (ESR) in the presence of an ac magnetic field can be electrically controlled by local gates due to varying $g$ factors in DQDs. We also show that shuttling between neighboring dots, in vertical and horizontal direction, results in ultrafast single qubit gates of less than a nanosecond. Remarkably, this DQD architecture completely eliminates the need for micromagnets, significantly facilitating the scalability of LD spin qubits in semiconductor foundries.

Fast spin control in a two-electron double quantum dot by dynamical invariants

Yue Ban, Xi Chen, Juan Gonzalo Muga +1 more

Inverse engineering of electric fields has been recently proposed to achieve fast and robust spin control in a single-electron quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling. In this paper we design, by inverse engineering based on Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants, time-dependent electric fields to realize fast transitions in the selected singlet-triplet subspace of a two-electron double quantum dot. We apply two-mode driving schemes, directly employing the Lewis-Riesenfeld phases, to minimize the electric field necessary to design flexible protocols and perform spin manipulation on the chosen timescale.
