Quantum markovian master equations: Resonance theory overcomes the weak coupling regime

Abstract

Quantum systems coupled to environments exhibit intricate dynamics. The master equation gives a Markov approximation of the dynamics, allowing for analytic and numerical treatments. It is ubiquitous in theoretical and applied quantum sciences. The accuracy of the master equation approximation was so far proven in the regime where time must not exceed an upper bound depending on the system-environment interaction strength (weak coupling regime). Here, we show that the Markov approximation is valid for fixed coupling strength and for all times. We also construct a new approximate markovian dynamics -- a completely positive, trace preserving semigroup -- which is asymptotically in time exact, to all orders in the coupling.

Markovian quantum master equations are exponentially accurate in the weak coupling regime

Johannes Agerskov, Frederik Nathan

We consider the evolution of open quantum systems coupled to one or more Gaussian environments. We demonstrate that such systems can be described by a Markovian quantum master equation (MQME) up to a correction that decreases exponentially with the inverse system-bath coupling strength. We provide an explicit expression for this MQME, along with rigorous bounds on its residual correction, and numerically benchmark it for an exactly solvable model. The MQME is obtained via a generalized Born-Markov approximation that can be iterated to arbitrary orders in the system-bath coupling; our error bound converges asymptotically to zero with the iteration order. Our results thus demonstrate that the non-Markovian component in the evolution of an open quantum system, while possibly inevitable, can be exponentially suppressed at weak coupling.

Markovian master equations: a critical study

́Angel Rivas, A. D. K. Plato, Susana F. Huelga +1 more

We derive Markovian master equations for single and interacting harmonic systems in different scenarios, including strong internal coupling. By comparing the dynamics resulting from the corresponding master equations with numerical simulations of the global system's evolution, we delimit their validity regimes and assess the robustness of the assumptions usually made in the process of deriving the reduced Markovian dynamics. The results of these illustrative examples serve to clarify the general properties of other open quantum system scenarios subject to treatment within a Markovian approximation.

Quantum Master Equations for Composite Systems: Is Born–Markov Approximation Really Valid?

Masatoshi Nakatani, Tetsuo Ogawa

Markovian quantum master equations are generally thought to satisfy the following three conditions: (i) they describe the dynamics of time scales that are larger than the reservoir correlation time scale, (ii) these stationary solutions give the thermal equilibrium states with a reservoir, and (iii) they can be written in the Lindblad form. In fact, for single systems such as a single harmonic oscillator and a single two-level system, Markovian quantum master equations satisfying all these conditions can be obtained. However, for composite systems, which consist of more than one subsystem coupled with each other, such equations have not been obtained thus far. In this study, we found that we cannot use the Born–Markov approximation for obtaining quantum master equations for composite systems in the strong-coupling regime, no matter how short the reservoir correlation time is.

Markovian dynamics under weak periodic coupling

Krzysztof Szczygielski

We examine a completely positive and trace preserving evolution of a finite dimensional open quantum system coupled to a large environment via the periodically modulated interaction Hamiltonian. We derive a corresponding Markovian master equation under the usual assumption of weak coupling using the projection operator techniques in two opposite regimes of very small and very large modulation frequency. Special attention is granted to the case of uniformly (globally) modulated interaction, where some general results concerning the Floquet normal form of a solution and its asymptotic stability are also addressed.

Dynamics of Open Quantum Systems II, Markovian Approximation

Marco Merkli

A finite-dimensional quantum system is coupled to a bath of oscillators in thermal equilibrium at temperature T>0 . We show that for fixed, small values of the coupling constant λ , the true reduced dynamics of the system is approximated by the completely positive, trace preserving Markovian semigroup generated by the Davies-Lindblad generator. The difference between the true and the Markovian dynamics is O(|λ|1/4) for all times, meaning that the solution of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation is approximating the true dynamics to accuracy O(|λ|1/4) for all times. Our method is based on a recently obtained expansion of the full system-bath propagator. It applies to reservoirs with correlation functions decaying in time as 1/t4 or faster, which is a significant improvement relative to the previously required exponential decay.
