A Generalized Geometric Measurement of Quantum Discord: Exact Treatment*

Abstract

Abstract A generalization of the geometric measure of quantum discord is introduced in this article, based on Hellinger distance. Our definition has virtues of computability and independence of local measurement. In addition it also does not suffer from the recently raised critiques about quantum discord. The exact result can be obtained for bipartite pure states with arbitrary levels, which is completely determined by the Schmidt decomposition. For bipartite mixed states the exact result can also be found for a special case. Furthermore the generalization into multipartite case is direct. It is shown that it can be evaluated exactly when the measured state is invariant under permutation or translation. In addition the detection of quantum phase transition is also discussed for Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick and Dicke model.

Geometric measures of quantum correlations: characterization, quantification, and comparison by distances and operations

Wojciech Roga, Dominique Spehner, Fabrizio Illuminati

Abstract We investigate and compare three distinguished geometric measures of bipartite quantum correlations that have been recently introduced in the literature: the geometric discord, the measurement-induced geometric discord, and the discord of response, each one defined according to three contractive distances on the set of quantum states, namely the trace, Bures, and Hellinger distances. We establish a set of exact algebraic relations and inequalities between the different measures. In particular, we show that the geometric discord and the discord of response based on the Hellinger distance are easy to compute analytically for all quantum states whenever the reference subsystem is a qubit. These two measures thus provide the first instance of discords that are simultaneously fully computable, reliable (since they satisfy all the basic Axioms that must be obeyed by a proper measure of quantum correlations), and operationally viable (in terms of state distinguishability). We apply the general mathematical structure to determine the closest classical-quantum state of a given state and the maximally quantum-correlated states at fixed global state purity according to the different distances, as well as a necessary condition for a channel to be quantumness breaking.

Analytical progress on symmetric geometric discord: Measurement-based upper bounds

Adam Miranowicz, Paweł Horodecki, Ravindra W. Chhajlany +2 more

Quantum correlations may be measured by means of the distance from the state to the subclass of states $\ensuremath{\Omega}$ having well-defined classical properties. In particular, a geometric measure of asymmetric discord [Daki\ifmmode \acute{c}\else \'{c}\fi{} et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 190502 (2010)] was recently defined as the Hilbert-Schmidt distance from a given two-qubit state to the closest classical-quantum (CQ) correlated state. We analyze a geometric measure of symmetric discord defined as the Hilbert-Schmidt distance from a given state to the closest classical-classical (CC) correlated state. The optimal member of $\ensuremath{\Omega}$ is just a specially measured original state for both the CQ and CC discords. This implies that this measure is equal to the quantum deficit of postmeasurement purity. We discuss some general relations between the CC discords and explain why an analytical formula for the CC discord, contrary to the CQ discord, can hardly be found even for a general two-qubit state. Instead of such an exact formula, we find simple analytical-measurement-based upper bounds for the CC discord which, as we show, are tight and faithful in the case of two qubits and may serve as independent indicators of two-party quantum correlations. In particular, we propose an adaptive upper bound, which corresponds to the optimal states induced by single-party measurements: optimal measurement on one of the parties determines an optimal measurement on the other party. We discuss how to refine the adaptive upper bound by nonoptimal single-party measurements and by an iterative procedure which usually rapidly converges to the CC discord. We also raise the question of optimality of the symmetric measurements realizing the CC discord on symmetric states and give a partial answer for the qubit case.

Geometric measure of quantum discord and total quantum correlations in anN-partite quantum state

Ali Saif M. Hassan, Pramod S. Joag

Quantum discord, as introduced by Ollivier and Zurek (2001 Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 017901), is a measure of the discrepancy between quantum versions of two classically equivalent expressions for mutual information and is found to be useful in quantification and application of quantum correlations in mixed states. It is viewed as a key resource present in certain quantum communication tasks and quantum computational models without containing much entanglement. An early step toward the quantification of quantum discord in a quantum state was by Dakic et al (2010 Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 190502) who introduced a geometric measure of quantum discord and derived an explicit formula for any two-qubit state. Recently, Luo and Fu (2010 Phys. Rev. A 82 034302) introduced a generic form of the geometric measure of quantum discord for a bipartite quantum state. We extend these results and find generic forms of the geometric measure of quantum discord and total quantum correlations in a general N -partite quantum state. Further, we obtain computable exact formulas for the geometric measure of quantum discord and total quantum correlations in an N -qubit quantum state. The exact formulas for the N -qubit quantum state can be used to get experimental estimates of the quantum discord and the total quantum correlation.

Hellinger distance as a measure of Gaussian discord

Paulina Marian, Tudor A. Marian

Especially investigated in recent years, the Gaussian discord can tentatively be quantified by a distance between a given two-mode Gaussian state (GS) and the set of all the zero-discord two-mode GSs. However, as this set consists only of product states, such a distance captures all the correlations (quantum and classical) between modes. Therefore it is merely an upper bound for the geometric discord, no matter which is the employed distance. In this work we choose for this purpose the Hellinger metric that is known to have many beneficial properties recommending it as a good measure of quantum behaviour. In general, this metric is determined by affinity, a relative of the Uhlmann fidelity with which it shares many important features. As a first step of our work, the affinity of a pair of n -mode GSs is written. Then, in the two-mode case, we succeeded in determining exactly the closest Gaussian product state and computed the Gaussian discord accordingly. The obtained general formula is remarkably simple and becomes still friendlier in the significant case of symmetric two-mode GSs. We then analyse in detail two special classes of two-mode GSs of theoretical and experimental interest as well: the squeezed thermal states and the mode-mixed thermal ones. The former are separable under a well-known threshold of squeezing, while the latter are always separable. It is worth stressing that for symmetric states belonging to either of these classes, we find consistency between their geometric Hellinger discord and the originally defined discord in the Gaussian approach. At the same time, the Gaussian Hellinger discord of such a state turns out to be a reliable measure of the total amount of its cross correlations.

Geometric quantum discord of an arbitrary two-qudit state: Exact value and general upper bounds

Elena R. Loubenets, Louis Hanotel

The geometric quantum discord of a two-qudit state has been studied in many papers; however, its exact analytical value in the explicit form is known only for a general two-qubit state, a general qubit-qudit state, and some special families of two-qudit states. Based on the general Bloch vectors formalism [E. R. Loubenets et al., J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 54, 195301 (2021)], we find the explicit exact analytical value of the geometric quantum discord for an arbitrary two-qudit state of any dimension via the parameters of its correlation matrix and the Bloch vectors of its reduced states. This general analytical result includes all the known exact results on the geometric quantum discord only as particular cases and proves rigorously that the lower bound on the geometric discord presented in [S. Rana et al., Phys. Rev. A 85, 024102 (2012)] constitutes its exact value for each two-qudit state. Moreover, our general result allows us to find for an arbitrary two-qudit state, pure or mixed, the upper and lower bounds on its geometric quantum discord, expressed via the Hilbert space characteristics of this state.
