Cooling the Collective Motion of Trapped Ions to Initialize a Quantum Register

We report preparation in the ground state of collective modes of motion of two trapped ${}^{9}{\mathrm{Be}}^{+}$ ions. This is a crucial step towards realizing quantum logic gates which can entangle the ions' internal electronic states. We find that heating of the modes of relative ion motion is substantially suppressed relative to that of the center-of-mass modes, suggesting the importance of these modes in future experiments.

Realization of Quantum Logic Gates in Ion Traps Without Any Requirement on the Lamb-Dicke Parameter

Zheng Shi-Biao, Feng Mang, Xiwen Zhu

A scheme is presented for realizing quantum logic gate in an ion trap. In the scheme the state of the m th ion is first replicated onto the collective motion. Then a transformation, conditional on the motional state, is performed on the n th ion. Finally the motional state is replicated back onto the m th ion. By this way the quantum logic gate between the m th and the n th ions is realized. The scheme does not put any requirement on the Lamb-Dicke parameter.

Sympathetic cooling of trapped ions for quantum logic

D. Kielpinski, B. E. King, Christopher J. Myatt +6 more

One limit to the fidelity of quantum logic operations on trapped ions arises from heating of the ions' collective modes of motion. Sympathetic cooling of the ions during the logic operations may eliminate this source of errors. We discuss the benefits and drawbacks of this proposal, and describe possible experimental implementations. We also present an overview of trapped-ion dynamics in this scheme.
