Local density approximation for almost-bosonic anyons

Abstract

We discuss the average-field approximation for a trapped gas of non-interacting anyons in the quasi-bosonic regime. In the homogeneous case, i.e., for a confinement to a bounded region, we prove that the energy in the regime of large statistics parameter, i.e., for “less-bosonic” anyons, is independent of boundary conditions and of the shape of the domain. When a non-trivial trapping potential is present, we derive a local density approximation in terms of a Thomas-Fermi-like model. The results presented here mainly summarize [Anal. PDE 10 (2017), 1169-1200] with additional remarks and strengthening of some statements.

Thomas-Fermi approximation for confined anyons

Shuxi Li, R. K. Bhaduri, M. V. N. Murthy

A Thomas-Fermi calculation in two spatial dimensions is performed for spinless fermions confined in an oscillator potential, and that interact via a statistical interaction. The nonlinear interpolation of the L=0 fermionic ground state to the bosonic end as a function of the interaction strength is studied. It is demonstrated that the method is well suited to study the energy, the angular momentum, and the spatial distribution of the mean magnetic field of the confined many-anyon system.

Analytic approach to the ground-state energy of charged anyon gases

B. Abdullaev, U. Rößler, M.M. Musakhanov

We derive an approximate analytic formula for the ground-state energy of the charged anyon gas. Our approach is based on the harmonically confined two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb anyon gas and a regularization procedure for vanishing confinement. To take into account the fractional statistics and Coulomb interaction we introduce a function, which depends on both the statistics and density parameters ($\ensuremath{\nu}$ and ${r}_{s}$, respectively). We determine this function by fitting to the ground-state energies of the classical electron crystal at very large ${r}_{s}$ (the 2D Wigner crystal), and to the Hartree-Fock (HF) energy of the spin-polarized 2D electron gas, and the dense 2D Coulomb Bose gas at very small ${r}_{s}$. The latter is calculated by use of the Bogoliubov approximation. Applied to the boson system $(\ensuremath{\nu}=0)$ our results are very close to recent results from Monte Carlo (MC) calculations. For spin-polarized electron systems $(\ensuremath{\nu}=1)$ our comparison leads to a critical judgment concerning the density range, to which the HF approximation and MC simulations apply. In dependence on $\ensuremath{\nu}$, our analytic formula yields ground-state energies, which monotonously increase from the bosonic to the fermionic side if ${r}_{s}>1$. For ${r}_{s}\ensuremath{\leqslant}1$ it shows a nonmonotonous behavior indicating a breakdown of the assumed continuous transformation of bosons into fermions by variation of the parameter $\ensuremath{\nu}$.

Microscopic derivation of the stationary Chern-Simons-Schrödinger equation for almost-bosonic anyons

Alireza Ataei, Douglas Lundholm, Théotime Girardot

In this work we consider the $N$-body Hamiltonian describing the microscopic structure of a quantum gas of almost-bosonic anyons. This description includes both extended magnetic flux and spin-orbit/soft-disk interaction between the particles which are confined in a scalar trapping potential. We study a physically well-motivated ansatz for a sequence of trial states, consisting of Jastrow repulsive short-range correlations and a condensate, with sufficient variational freedom to approximate the ground state (and possibly also low-energy excited states) of the gas. In the limit $N \to \infty$, while taking the relative size of the anyons to zero and the total magnetic flux $2πβ$ to remain finite, we rigorously derive the stationary Chern-Simons-Schrödinger/average-field-Pauli effective energy density functional for the condensate wave function. This includes a scalar self-interaction parameter $γ$ which depends both on $β$, the diluteness of the gas, and the spin-orbit coupling strength $g$, but becomes independent of these microscopic details for a particular value of the coupling $g=2$ in which supersymmetry is exhibited (on all scales, both microscopic and mesoscopic) with $γ=2π|β|$. Our findings confirm and clarify the predictions we have found in the physics literature.

Local density approximation for a perturbative equation of state

G. E. Astrakharchik

Knowledge of a series expansion of the equation of state provides a deep insight into the physical nature of a quantum system. Starting from a generic ``perturbative'' equation of state of a homogeneous ultracold gas we make predictions for the properties of the gas in the presence of harmonic confinement. The local density approximation is used to obtain the chemical potential, total and release energies, Thomas-Fermi size, and density profile of a trapped system in three-, two-, and one-dimensional geometries. The frequencies of the lowest breathing modes are calculated using scaling and sum-rule approaches and could be used in an experiment as a high-precision tool for obtaining the expansion terms of the equation of state. The derived formalism is applied to dilute Bose and Fermi gases in different dimensions and to integrable one-dimensional models. The physical meaning of the expansion terms in a number of systems is discussed.

Dimensional Reduction : From 2D Anyons to a 1D Effective Model under Anisotropic Confinement

Qiyun Yang

This thesis addresses the dimensional reduction of two-dimensional (2D) Abelian anyons under strong anisotropic confinement, studied both at the microscopic many-body level and at the mean-field/almost-bosonic level.Anyons are quasi-particles with fractional statistics that interpolate between bosons and fermions, characterized by an exchange phase e^{i·π·α} for α in (0, 1). The theoretical concept of anyons dates back to the work of Leinaas and Myrheim in 1977, while convincing experimental evidence for their existence emerged only in 2020, through their realization in fractional quantum Hall systems. Investigating their behavior under confinement not only clarifies the connections between one- and two-dimensional anyons, but also offers new insights into the mathematical structure of anyonic systems. At the microscopic level, we consider N anyons in the magnetic gauge picture with a harmonic trapping potential that freezes the motion in the longitudinal (y) direction. We rigorously prove that, after subtracting the frozen longitudinal contribution, the associated 2D energy Γ-converges to that of the one-dimensional (1D) Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas. This establishes a precise mathematical connection between 2D anyons and 1D impenetrable bosons, and, via the Bose-Fermi mapping, to a free Fermi gas. Importantly, this 1D limit model is independent of the exchange parameter α at leading order, indicating that the effect of the magnetic gauge field is gauged away up to o(1) corrections. Equivalently, the long-range Aharonov-Bohm interactions collapse into a hard-core exclusion constraint in this dimensional reduction limit. At the mean-field level, in the average-field regime (N → ∞ with α proportional to N^{-1}), the 2D anyon system is described by the Chern-Simons-Schrödinger (CSS) functional, a nonlinear magnetic Schrödinger model with a self-consistent gauge field. Performing the same anisotropic dimensional reduction limit, the resulting 1D effective model is described by a quintic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, whose quintic nonlinearity stems from the magnetic self-consistent gauge in the CSS model. This dimensional reduction is established both at the level of ground-state energies and, under suitable well-posedness assumptions on the CSS dynamics, at the level of time evolution. Unlike the TG gas, the effective coupling constant g in the quintic NLS retains a dependence on the exchange parameter α through g = π·β² for β proportional to α·N.Taken together, these results yield two distinct effective 1D descriptions arising from different orders of limits. Crucially, the mean-field/almost-bosonic limit and the dimensional reduction (strong confinement) limit do not commute: the TG gas limit is α-independent, whereas the quintic NLS limit keeps an α-dependence through β proportional to α·N. This non-commutativity highlights the subtle interplay between scaling limits and confinement in anyonic systems. Future work might investigate whether a critical regime separates these two situations.

Average field approximation for almost bosonic anyons in a magnetic field

Théotime Girardot

We study the ground state of a large number N of 2D extended anyons in an external magnetic field. We consider a scaling limit where the statistics parameter α is proportional to N−1 when N → ∞, which allows the statistics to be seen as a “perturbation around the bosonic end.” Our model is that of bosons in a magnetic field interacting through long-range magnetic potential generated by magnetic charges carried by each particle, smeared over discs of radius R. Our method allows us to take R → 0 not too fast at the same time as N → ∞ : R = N−1/4+ɛ. We use the information theoretic version of the de Finetti theorem of Brandão and Harrow to justify the so-called “average field approximation”: the particles behave like independent, identically distributed bosons interacting via a self-consistent magnetic field.
