A PRIORI ESTIMATES FOR MANY-BODY HAMILTONIAN EVOLUTION OF INTERACTING BOSON SYSTEM

Abstract

We study the evolution of a many-particle system whose wave function obeys the N-body Schrödinger equation under Bose symmetry. The system Hamiltonian describes pairwise particle interactions in the absence of an external potential. We derive a priori dispersive estimates that express the overall repulsive nature of the particle interactions. These estimates hold for a wide class of two-body interaction potentials which are independent of the particle number, N. We discuss applications of these estimates to the BBGKY hierarchy for reduced density matrices analyzed by Elgart, Erdős, Schlein and Yau.

Derivation of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation from a many-body Coulomb system

László Erdős, Horng‐Tzer Yau

We consider the time evolution of iV bosonic particles interacting via a mean field Coulomb potential.Suppose the initial state is a product wavefunction. We show that at any finite time the correlation functions factorize in the limit N -> oo.Furthermore, the limiting one particle density matrix satisfies the nonlinear Hartree equation. The key ingredients are the uniqueness of the BBGKY hierarchy for the correlation functions and a new apriori estimate for the many-body Schrodinger equations.

Effective Evolution Equations in Quantum Physics

Benjamin Schlein

In these notes, we review some recent mathematical results concerning the derivation of effective evolution equations from many body quantum mechanics. In particular, we discuss the emergence of the Hartree equation in the so-called mean field regime (for example, for systems of gravitating bosons), and we show that the Gross-Pitaevskii equation approximates the dynamics of initially trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. We explain how effective evolution equations can be derived, on the one hand, by analyzing the so called BBGKY hierarchy, describing the time-evolution of reduced density matrices, and, on the other hand, by studying the dynamics of coherent initial states in a Fock-space representation of the many body system.

Derivation of the two dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation from many body quantum dynamics

Kay Kirkpatrick, Benjamin Schlein, Gigliola Staffilani

We derive rigorously, for both R^2 and [-L, L]^2, the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation in a suitable scaling limit from the two-dimensional many-body Bose systems with short-scale repulsive pair interactions. We first prove convergence of the solution of the BBGKY hierarchy, corresponding to the many-body systems, to a solution of the infinite Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy, corresponding to the cubic NLS; and then we prove uniqueness for the infinite hierarchy, which requires number-theoretical techniques in the periodic case.

We derive rigorously, for both ${\Bbb R}^2$ and $[{-}L,L]^{\times 2}$, the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in a suitable scaling limit from the two-dimensional many-body Bose systems with short-scale repulsive pair interactions. Derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensate

László Erdős, Benjamin Schlein, Horng‐Tzer Yau

Consider a system of $N$ bosons in three dimensions interacting via a repulsive short range pair potential $N^2V(N(x_i-x_j))$, where $\bx=(x_1, >..., x_N)$ denotes the positions of the particles. Let $H_N$ denote the Hamiltonian of the system and let $ψ_{N,t}$ be the solution to the Schrödinger equation. Suppose that the initial data $ψ_{N,0}$ satisfies the energy condition \[ < ψ_{N,0}, H_N^k ψ_{N,0} > \leq C^k N^k \] for $k=1,2,... $. We also assume that the $k$-particle density matrices of the initial state are asymptotically factorized as $N\to\infty$. We prove that the $k$-particle density matrices of $ψ_{N,t}$ are also asymptotically factorized and the one particle orbital wave function solves the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a cubic non-linear Schrödinger equation with the coupling constant given by the scattering length of the potential $V$. We also prove the same conclusion if the energy condition holds only for $k=1$ but the factorization of $ψ_{N,0}$ is assumed in a stronger sense.
