Colloquium: Bulk Bogoliubov excitations in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Roee Ozeri, Nadav Y. Katz, Jeff Steinhauer +1 more

Bogoliubov theory for excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates was formulated over 50 years ago to qualitatively explain strongly interacting superfluids. Quantitative experimental verification of this theory came with the long-awaited realization of gaseous, weakly interacting condensates. This Colloquium reviews recent experimental advances in the study of Bogoliubov bulk excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates, obtained using two-photon Bragg scattering.

U-MATRIX THEORY, BOGOLIUBOV TRANSFORMATION AND BCS TRIAL WAVE FUNCTION

Lam A

The U-matrlx theory in quantum mechanics recently developed has been appliedto study a superconductor system described by the BCS pairing Hamiltonian . It is shown that in general the -operator in our theory specifies a canonical transformation. Using the to describe the system, it is proved that if the Hartrec type approximation is adopted, or the c-number approach is used, the Bogoliubov transformation can be derived via the U-matrix theory if the perturbing Hamiltonian is turned on 'suddenly'. It is also shown that based on the U-matrix, the BCS ground state wave function of a superconducting system can be deduced under the sudden switching condition.

On the Thermodynamic Limit of Bogoliubov’s Theory of the Bose Gas

Levent Akant, Ebru Dogan, Emine Ertuğrul +1 more

Abstract Assuming that Bogoliubov’s theory of weakly interacting dilute Bose gas defines a self-consistent model Hamiltonian, we investigate its thermodynamic limit as we take the volume to infinity. The infinite volume is taken via a sequence of scaled convex regions with piecewise smooth boundary and the volumes staying proportional to the cube of the diameter of the region. To get a strict bound on the behavior of the thermodynamic limit, we use the recent formulation of Bogoliubov’s theory of condensation in terms of heat kernels for a given domain as well as an estimate of the difference of traces between the heat kernel with Neumann boundary conditions on this domain and the infinite space result. We cannot control the limiting process by the area term; however, we can come arbitrarily close to it.
