Kosterlitz-Thouless scaling at many-body localization phase transitions

Philipp T. Dumitrescu, Anna Goremykina, S. A. Parameswaran +2 more

We propose a scaling theory for the many-body localization (MBL) phase transition in one dimension, building on the idea that it proceeds via a ``quantum avalanche.'' We argue that the critical properties can be captured at a coarse-grained level by a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) renormalization group (RG) flow. On phenomenological grounds, we identify the scaling variables as the density of thermal regions and the length scale that controls the decay of typical matrix elements. Within this KT picture, the MBL phase is a line of fixed points that terminates at the delocalization transition. We discuss two possible scenarios distinguished by the distribution of rare, fractal thermal inclusions within the MBL phase. In the first scenario, these regions have a stretched exponential distribution in the MBL phase. In the second scenario, the near-critical MBL phase hosts rare thermal regions that are power-law-distributed in size. This points to the existence of a second transition within the MBL phase, at which these power laws change to the stretched exponential form expected at strong disorder. We numerically simulate two different phenomenological RGs previously proposed to describe the MBL transition. Both RGs display a universal power-law length distribution of thermal regions at the transition with a critical exponent ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c}=2$, and continuously varying exponents in the MBL phase consistent with the KT picture.

Critical properties of the Anderson transition on random graphs: Two-parameter scaling theory, Kosterlitz-Thouless type flow, and many-body localization

Ignacio García-Mata, John Martin, O. Giraud +3 more

The Anderson transition in random graphs has raised great interest, partly out of the hope that its analogy with the many-body localization (MBL) transition might lead to a better understanding of this hotly debated phenomenon. Unlike the latter, many results for random graphs are now well established, in particular, the existence and precise value of a critical disorder separating a localized from an ergodic delocalized phase. However, the renormalization group flow and the nature of the transition are not well understood. In turn, recent works on the MBL transition have made the remarkable prediction that the flow is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type. In this paper, we show that the Anderson transition on graphs displays the same type of flow. Our work attests to the importance of rare branches along which wave functions have a much larger localization length ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}$ than the one in the transverse direction ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$. Importantly, these two lengths have different critical behaviors: ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}$ diverges with a critical exponent ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}=1$, while ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ reaches a finite universal value ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}^{c}$ at the transition point ${W}_{c}$. Indeed, ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\ensuremath{\approx}{{\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}^{c}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}+{\ensuremath{\xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, with $\ensuremath{\xi}\ensuremath{\sim}{(W\ensuremath{-}{W}_{c})}^{\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$ associated with a new critical exponent ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}=\frac{1}{2}$, where $exp(\ensuremath{\xi})$ controls finite-size effects. The delocalized phase inherits the strongly nonergodic properties of the critical regime at short scales, but is ergodic at large scales, with a unique critical exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{2}$. This shows a very strong analogy with the MBL transition: the behavior of ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ is identical to that recently predicted for the typical localization length of MBL in a phenomenological renormalization group flow. We demonstrate these important properties for a small-world complex network model and show the universality of our results by considering different network parameters and different key observables of Anderson localization.

Detecting delocalization-localization transitions from full density distributions

Miroslav Hopjan, Giuliano Orso, Fabian Heidrich‐Meisner

Characterizing the delocalization transition in closed quantum systems with a many-body localized phase is a key open question in the field of nonequilibrium physics. We exploit the fact that localization of particles as realized in Anderson localization and standard many-body localization (MBL) implies Fock-space localization in single-particle basis sets characterized by a real-space index. Using a recently introduced quantitative measure for Fock-space localization computed from the density distributions, the occupation distance, we systematically study its scaling behavior across delocalization transitions and identify critical points from scaling collapses of numerical data. Excellent agreement with literature results is found for the critical disorder strengths of noninteracting fermions, such as the one-dimensional Aubry-Andr\'e model and the three-dimensional Anderson model. We observe a distinctively different scaling behavior in the case of interacting fermions with random disorder consistent with a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Finally, we use our measure to extract the transition point as a function of filling for interacting fermions.
