Abstract

We investigate the memory of a surface polariton (SP) via the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of quantum emitters doped at the interface between a dielectric and a metamaterial. We show that, due to the strong mode confinement provided by the interface, the EIT effect can be largely enhanced; furthermore, the storage and retrieval of the SP can be realized by switching off and on a control laser field; additionally, the efficiency and fidelity of the SP memory can be much improved by using a weak microwave field. The results reported here are helpful not only for enhancing the understanding of the SP property but also for promising applications in quantum information processing and transmission.

Surface polariton-polariton induced transparency in left-handed metamaterials

Ali A. Kamli, Sergey A. Moiseev, Barry C. Sanders

Surface polaritons (SP) are electromagnetic waves that propagate near the interface of two media with electric field amplitudes strongly decaying with distance from the interface. The two media could be left-handed with both the electric permittivity and magnetic permeability being negative. These media give us new possibilities of slow light control [1,2]. Here we propose to control SP mode propagation in left-handed materials using SP-SP induced transparency. In the proposed scheme, the spatially confined SP interacts with three level lambda type atoms near the surface. An expression for the complex absorption coefficient in the presence of additional control SP mode is derived. We demonstrate a new specific spectral behavior of the probe SP mode propagation that are determined by the spatial properties of interaction between the SP modes and three level atoms. Optimal conditions for the SP mode control will be discussed.

Coherent Control of Low Loss Surface Polaritons

Ali A. Kamli, Sergey A. Moiseev, Barry C. Sanders

We propose fast all-optical control of surface polaritons by placing an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium at an interface between two materials. EIT provides longitudinal compression and a slow group velocity, while matching properties of the two materials at the interface provides strong transverse confinement. In particular, we show that an EIT medium near the interface between a dielectric and a negative-index metamaterial can establish tight longitudinal and transverse confinement plus extreme slowing of surface polaritons, in both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations, while simultaneously avoiding losses.

Low loss magnetic surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes characterized by enhanced electrical field component and subwavelength confinement on the dielectric and negative-index metamaterial interface are presented. We demonstrate a possibility of storage and perfect retrieval of the low loss magnetic SPP fields by using a photon echo quantum memory on Raman atomic transition. We describe the specific properties of the proposed technique which opens a possibility for efficient nano scale multi-mode quantum memory.

Quantum memory of single-photon polarization qubits via double electromagnetically induced transparency

Qi Zhang, Guoxiang Huang

We present a theoretical investigation on the quantum memory of photonic polarization qubits via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The system we consider is a tripod-shaped four-level atomic system working under the condition of a double EIT, by which the storage and retrieval of a single-photon polarization qubit are implemented through the switching off and on of a control laser field, and the storage efficiency and the quantum-state fidelity for qubit memory are both calculated. We show that the optimal optical depth for acquiring the maximum efficiency and maximum fidelity of the qubit memory can be obtained simultaneously, which can be further improved by suppressing the optical absorption and dispersion via the choice of the time duration of the input qubit pulse and the amplitude of the control field. We also carry out a calculation on the quantum memory of a single-photon qudit by considering a multipod-shaped atomic-level configuration. The results reported here are useful for understanding the quantum transmission property of slow lights with multiple components and helpful for experimental realizations of high-quality memory of photonic qubits and qudits.

Storage and retrieval of ultraslow soliton at optical nanofiber interface via electromagnetically induced transparency

Yong Zhou, Can Yi, Qi Liu +2 more

We theoretically investigate the optical memory in a nanofiber system via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a nonlinear region. Because of the tight transverse confinement, the light-atom interaction is significantly enhanced and thus, the EIT effect is enhanced. The inhomogeneous mode field distribution contributes spatially to the EIT dispersion. We develop a systematic analysis method to study the nonlinearity of the system and prove that the optical soliton is available in the system and can be stored and retrieved with high efficiency and stability. We also study a strategy to optimize the soliton optical memory. The results obtained in this study are promising for practical applications of all-optical information processing.
