Abstract

Abstract The existing widely-accepted theory of photon-pair generation via spontaneous down-conversion (SPDC) in nonlinear optical crystals and waveguides is incomplete, as it fails to account for the important physical phenomenon of parametric resonances. We demonstrate that exponential gain of classical fields in the regime of parametric resonance corresponds to resonant delocalisation in the Glauber–Fock model of quantum SPDC. We propose a quantitative measure of localisation of Floquet eigen-modes as an analogue of classical gain to identify regimes of resonant delocalisation. Using this method, we are able to reconstruct the classical ‘Arnold tongues’ map of domains of instabilities for SPDC. We also predict novel regimes of resonant delocalisation in the two-level model describing quantum frequency conversion processes.

Frequency conversion in regular and stochastic quasi-phase matched structures

Zh. D. Genchev

The influence of disordering of one-dimensional quasi-phase matched structures in nonlinear optical crystals on spectral characteristics of parametric processes is studied. Two different correlation functions are introduced for describing the random change of the sign of the second-order nonlinear susceptibility. The optimal conditions for quasi-phase matching of the interacting waves are found. The second aim of the paper is the investigation of important features of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a homogeneous nonlinear slabs with emphasis of spatial inhomogeneity of interacting waves (in paraxial approximation). We estimate the absolute values of the emission rate of photon pairs produced by SPDC when all fields are in single Gaussian modes.

Off-resonant emission of photon pairs in nonlinear optical cavities

Valentin Averchenko, Gerhard Schunk, Michael Förtsch +4 more

Cavity-assisted spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) and spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in nonlinear optical materials are practical and versatile methods to generate narrowband time-energy entangled photon pairs. Time-energy entangled photons with tailored spectro-temporal properties are particularly useful for efficient quantum optical interfaces. In this work we study the generation of photon pairs in cavity-assisted SPDC and SFWM for the general case of off-resonant conversion, namely, when the frequencies of the generated photons do not match the cavity resonances. Such a frequency mismatch in particular depends on temperature and requires an additional control in the experiment. First, we propose a generic model, for description of cavity-assisted SPDC and SFWM. We show that in both processes the mismatch reduces the generation rate of photons, distorts the spectrum and the auto-correlation function of the generated fields, as well as affects the photon generation dynamics. Second, we verify the results experimentally using parametric generation of photon pairs in a nonlinear whispering gallery mode resonator (WGMR) as an experimental platform with controlled frequency mismatch. Our work reveals the role of the frequency mismatch in the photon generation process and shows a way to control it. Obtained results constitute one more step in the direction of full control over the spectro-temporal properties of entangled photon pairs and the heralded generation of single-photon pulses with a tailored temporal mode.

Efficient photon-pair emission from a nanostructured resonator and its theoretical description

Michael Poloczek, Alberto Paniate, Attilio Zilli +12 more

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in subwavelength nanostructures is a promising source of quantum light, owing to its multifunctionality and ability to generate complex quantum states. Nevertheless, the mechanisms governing photon-pair generation in such systems remain only partially understood. In particular, experimental investigations of key emission properties in individual resonators, such as directionality and spectral distribution, are still lacking, and predictive theoretical frameworks have not yet been experimentally validated. Here, we report the first measurement of the directional and spectral distributions of photon pairs generated via SPDC in a nanostructured resonator. Both distributions exhibit resonant behaviour, which we describe using an extended quasi-normal-mode theory. This comparison is enabled by photon-pair count rates of up to 0.45 Hz/mW -- to our knowledge, the highest reported for a nanostructured resonator. Our results provide new physical insight into nanoscale SPDC and represent an important step toward designing of efficient miniaturized quantum light sources.
