Abstract

The recent experimental creation of knotted solitons in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates opens an interesting avenue for exploring the stability and dynamics of knot solitons. Knotted and helical vortices can be accommodated in spin-orbit-coupled antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. We demonstrate the stability of these topological structures via numerical simulations of the corresponding Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By changing the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, we find that the ground state undergoes a change from a knotted spin texture to a helical spin texture. Our results reveal that these types of topological object are experimentally realizable in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates.

Stable knots in the trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Yong-Kai Liu, Shiping Feng, Shi-Jie Yang

The knot of spin texture is studied within the two-component Bose-Einstein condensates which are described by the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations. We start from the non-interacting equations including an axisymmetric harmonic trap to obtain an exact solution, which exhibits a non-trivial topological structure. The spin-texture is a knot with an integral Hopf invariant. The stability of the knot is verified by numerically evolving the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations along imaginary time.

Helical spin textures in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

J. A. M. Huhtamäki, Pekko Kuopanportti

We numerically study elongated helical spin textures in ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates subject to dipolar interparticle forces. Stationary states of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation are solved and analyzed for various values of the helical wave vector and dipolar coupling strength. We find two helical spin textures which differ by the nature of their topological defects. The spin structure hosting a pair of Mermin-Ho vortices with opposite mass flows and aligned spin currents is stabilized for a nonzero value of the helical wave vector.

Ground states, solitons and spin textures in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Shu-Wei Song, Lin Wen, Chao-Fei Liu +2 more

We present an overview of our recent theoretical studies on the quantum phenomena of the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates, including the phase diagram, soliton solutions and the formation of the topological spin textures. A brief exploration of the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the ground-state properties is given. We put forward proposals by using the transmission spectra of an optical cavity to probe the quantum ground states: the ferromagnetic and polar phases. Quasi-one-dimension solitons and ring dark solitons are studied. It is predicted that characteristics of the magnetic solitons in optical lattice can be tuned by controlling the long-range light-induced and static magnetic dipoledipole interactions; solutions of single-component magnetic and single-, two-, three-components polar solitons are found; ring dark solitons in spin-1 condensates are predicted to live longer lifetimes than that in their scalar counterparts. In the formation of spin textures, we have considered the theoretical model of a rapidly quenched and fast rotating trapped spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate, whose dynamics can be studied by solving the stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Spontaneous generation of nontrivial topological defects, such as the hexagonal lattice skyrmions and square lattice of half-quantized vortices was predicted. In particular, crystallization of merons (half skyrmions) can be generated in the presence of spin-orbit coupling.

Three-dimensional solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

刘永恺, 杨师杰

We investigate a kind of solitons in the two-component Bose–Einstein condensates with axisymmetric configurations in the R2×S1space. The corresponding topological structure is referred to as Hopfion. The spin texture differs from the conventional three-dimensional(3D) skyrmion and knot, which is characterized by two homotopy invariants. The stability of the Hopfion is verified numerically by evolving the Gross–Pitaevskii equations in imaginary time.

Knots in Condensed Matters

Y. M. Cho

We propose two types of topologically stable knot solitons in condensed matters, one in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and one in two-gap superconductors. We identify the knot in Bose-Einstein condensates as a twisted vorticity flux ring and the knot in two-gap superconductors as a twisted magnetic flux ring. In both cases we show that there is a remarkable interplay between topology and dynamics which transforms the topologcal stability to the dynamical stability, and vise versa. We discuss how these knots can be constructed in the spin-1/2 condensate of $^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms and in two-gap superconductor of $MgB_2$.
