Thermodynamics of rotating weakly interacting Bose gases in a harmonic trap

Abstract

The analytical expressions of particle number, critical temperature, condensate fraction, total energy, specific heat and spatial distribution of particle current for rotating weakly interacting Bose gases in a harmonic trap are derived by using the local density approximation (LDA). The effects of weakly repulsive interaction on the above thermodynamics are discussed by introducing a positive scattering length. Our results completely coincide with those for the case of rotating ideal Bose gases when the weak interaction disappears.

Thermodynamic Properties of a Weakly Interacting Bose Gas Trapped in a Harmonic Potential

Lixuan Chen

The thermodynamic properties of a weakly interacting Bose gas trapped in a harmonic potential are studied based on the local-density approximation (LDA). The spatial distributions of particle number and energy and the expressions of some important thermodynamic quantities are derived analytically. The effects of the interatomic interaction on the thermodynamic properties of the system are discussed.

Critical Temperature and Ground State Fraction of a Weakly Interacting Bose Gas Trapped in a Harmonic Potential

Lixuan Chen

The critical temperature for the Bose-Einstein Condensation of an imperfect Bose gas trapped in a harmonic potential is calculated by using the local density approximation (LDA). The effects of weak interaction on the critical temperature and ground-state fraction of particles are discussed. The investigation will be helpful for the further understanding of the properties of BEC, which is called as a new kind of state of matter.

Effects of interaction on thermodynamics of a repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate

Satadal Bhattacharyya, Tapan Kumar Das, Barnali Chakrabarti

We report the effects of interaction on thermodynamic properties of a repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a harmonic trap by using the correlated potential harmonics expansion method. This many-body technique permits the use of a realistic interactomic interaction, which gives rise to the effective long-range interaction of the condensate in terms of the $s$-wave scattering length. We have computed temperature ($T$) dependence of the chemical potential, specific heat, condensate fraction, entropy, pressure, and the average energy per particle of a system containing a large number ($A$) of ${}^{87}$Rb atoms in the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) trap. The repulsion among the interacting bosons results in a small but measurable drop of condensate fraction and critical temperature (${T}_{c}$), compared to those of a noninteracting condensate. These are in agreement with the experiment. Although all thermodynamic quantities have a strong dependence on $A$ and to a smaller extent on the interatomic interaction, our numerical calculation appears to show that a thermodynamic quantity per particle follows a universal behavior as a function of $T/{T}_{c}$. This shows the importance of ${T}_{c}$ for all thermodynamic properties of the condensate. As expected, for $T>{T}_{c}$, these properties follow those of a trapped noncondensed Bose gas.

Thermodynamic properties of a finite Bose gas in a harmonic trap

Wang Jian-Hui, Ma Yong-Li

We have investigated the thermodynamic behaviour of ideal Bose gases with an arbitrary number of particles confined in a harmonic potential. By taking into account the conservation of the total number N of particles and using a saddle-point approximation, we derive analytically the simple explicit expression of mean occupation number in any state of the finite system. The temperature dependence of the chemical potential, specific heat, and condensate fraction for the trapped finite-size Bose system is obtained numerically. We compare our results with the usual treatment which is based on the grand canonical ensemble. It is shown that there exists a considerable difference between them at sufficiently low temperatures, especially for the relative small numbers of Bose atoms. The finite-size scaling at the transition temperature for the harmonically trapped systems is also discussed. We find that the scaled condensate fractions for various system sizes and temperatures collapse onto a single scaled form.

Condensate fraction and critical temperature of a trapped interacting Bose gas

S. Giorgini, Лев П. Питаевский, S. Stringari

By using a mean-field approach, based on the Popov approximation, we calculate the temperature dependence of the condensate fraction of an interacting Bose gas of N atoms confined in an anisotropic harmonic trap. For systems interacting with repulsive forces we find a significant decrease of the condensate fraction and of the critical temperature with respect to the predictions of the noninteracting model with the same value of N. An analytic result for the shift of the critical temperature holding to first order in the scattering length is also derived. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Weak interaction on a trapped Bose-condensed gas

Kunyan Zhu

The influence of weak interaction on a Bose-Einstein condensation was considered in a powerlaw potential using the semiclassical approximation.Critical temperature of repulsive interaction exhibited an upward shift proportional to s-wave scattering lengthα,while interaction energy and specific heat decreased.Exploring weak interaction influence on adiabatically cooling provided evidence that relatively strongly interacting gases react less susceptibly to the external field.

This many-body technique permits the use of a realistic interactomic interaction, which gives rise to the effective long-range interaction of the condensate in terms of the sss-wave scattering length. The repulsion among the interacting bosons results in a small but measurable drop of condensate fraction and critical temperature (Tc{T}_{c}Tc), compared to those of a noninteracting condensate. This shows the importance of Tc{T}_{c}Tc for all thermodynamic properties of the condensate. As expected, for T>TcT>{T}_{c}T>Tc, these properties follow those of a trapped noncondensed Bose gas.
