Spectroscopy of micro-fabricated Cs vapours cells for miniature atomic clocks

D. Miletic, C. Affolderbach, G. Mileti +2 more

In this paper we present our spectroscopic studies on Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) in micro-fabricated Caesium cells and our evaluation of its application in miniature atomic frequency standards (atomic clocks). We observe the CPT signal on the Cs D1-line by coupling two hyperfine ground-state Zeeman sub-levels to a common excited state using two coherent electromagnetic fields created with a modulated DFB laser. Contrarily to double resonance, CPT does not require any microwave cavity, which should facilitate the miniaturization of a future atomic clock device. We study and report here on the light shift phenomena at different cell temperatures and laser wavelength. We also present resonance shifts due to cell temperature variations and clock frequency stability measurements. To the best of our knowledge, this article is the first report on light shift with Cs D1 line in a CPT vapour-cell atomic clock.

Compact ultra-cold and thermal atomic clocks with stabilities better than part-per-trillion at one second

Erling Riis, Paul F. Griffin

In this talk, I will outline two stands of our ongoing atomic clock research at the University of Strathclyde, aimed at achieving short-term stabilities surpassing 1e-12 in portable systems. Firstly, I present a cold-atom microwave clock that integrates a grating-MOT within an additively manufactured microwave cavity, enabling a compact and potentially highly stable portable system. The work examines noise minimisation techniques through direct comparison with a cold-atom coherent population trapping (CPT) clock. I will also discuss progress on two-photon rubidium clocks based on MEMS vapour cells with integrated optics. The results highlight their prospects for resilient PNT applications and scalable deployment.

Study of lin||lin CPT for application in vapour cell atomic clocks

We evaluate the use of Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) excited with parallely polarized laser fields in vapour cell atomic clocks. We study the resonance shape, the discriminator slope and signal-to-noise ratio as a function of relevant parameters such as the laser frequency detuning and the applied magnetic field. We show that a stability of $6 \cdot 10^{-12}$ $τ^{-1/2}$ may be reached in a compact system using a modulated VCSEL.
