A Comparative Study On Solving Optimization Problems With Exponentially Fewer Qubits

David Winderl, Nicola Franco, Jeanette Miriam Lorenz

Variational Quantum optimization algorithms, such as the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) or the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), are among the most studied quantum algorithms. In our work, we evaluate and improve an algorithm based on VQE, which uses exponentially fewer qubits compared to the QAOA. We highlight the numerical instabilities generated by encoding the problem into the variational ansatz and propose a classical optimization procedure to find the ground-state of the ansatz in less iterations with a better or similar objective. Furthermore, we compare classical optimizers for this variational ansatz on quadratic unconstrained binary optimization and graph partitioning problems.

A case study of variational quantum algorithms for a job shop scheduling problem

David Amaro, Matthias Rosenkranz, Nathan Fitzpatrick +2 more

Abstract Combinatorial optimization models a vast range of industrial processes aiming at improving their efficiency. In general, solving this type of problem exactly is computationally intractable. Therefore, practitioners rely on heuristic solution approaches. Variational quantum algorithms are optimization heuristics that can be demonstrated with available quantum hardware. In this case study, we apply four variational quantum heuristics running on IBM’s superconducting quantum processors to the job shop scheduling problem. Our problem optimizes a steel manufacturing process. A comparison on 5 qubits shows that the recent filtering variational quantum eigensolver (F-VQE) converges faster and samples the global optimum more frequently than the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), the standard variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), and variational quantum imaginary time evolution (VarQITE). Furthermore, F-VQE readily solves problem sizes of up to 23 qubits on hardware without error mitigation post processing.

Improved Accuracy on Noisy Devices by Nonunitary Variational Quantum Eigensolver for Chemistry Applications

F. Benfenati, Guglielmo Mazzola, Chiara Capecci +4 more

We propose a modification of the Variational Quantum Eigensolver algorithm for electronic structure optimization using quantum computers, named nonunitary Variational Quantum Eigensolver (nu-VQE), in which a nonunitary operator is combined with the original system Hamiltonian leading to a new variational problem with a simplified wave function ansatz. In the present work, as nonunitary operator, we use the Jastrow factor, inspired from classical Quantum Monte Carlo techniques for simulation of strongly correlated electrons. The method is applied to prototypical molecular Hamiltonians for which we obtain accurate ground-state energies with shallower circuits, at the cost of an increased number of measurements. Finally, we also show that this method achieves an important error mitigation effect that drastically improves the quality of the results for VQE optimizations on today's noisy quantum computers. The absolute error in the calculated energy within our scheme is 1 order of magnitude smaller than the corresponding result using traditional VQE methods, with the same circuit depth.
