One-shot Distillation in a General Resource Theory

Abstract

We present a general framework of a resource theory based on the assumption of a) convexity and b) that the overlap of free states with maximally resourceful state is bounded. Using this structure, we derive bounds on the one-shot distillation rate for such a resource theory, thereby reproducing known bounds in coherence and entanglement. We use the free robustness and introduce a function $G_min$ related to overlap between states to express our bounds. To deal with resource theories where the free robustness in not finite we introduce the notion of imperfect free operations which we call $\epsilon$-resource generating operations and generalize the free robustness to$\epsilon$-free robustness. We construct an $\epsilon$-resource generating map that achieves pure state transformations and derive the conditions for such a transformation in terms of the $\epsilon$-free robustness.

Simple bounds for one-shot pure-state distillation in general resource theories

Madhav Krishnan Vijayan, Eric Chitambar, Min-Hsiu Hsieh

We present bounds for distilling many copies of a pure state from an arbitrary initial state in a general quantum resource theory. Our bounds apply to operations that are able to generate no more than a $\ensuremath{\delta}$ amount of resource, where $\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\ge}0$ is a given parameter. To maximize applicability of our upper bound, we assume little structure on the set of free states under consideration besides a weak form of superadditivity of the function ${G}_{\mathrm{min}}(\ensuremath{\rho})$, which measures the overlap between $\ensuremath{\rho}$ and the set of free states. Our bounds are given in terms of this function and the robustness of resource. Known results in coherence and entanglement theory are reproduced in this more general framework.

One-Shot Operational Quantum Resource Theory

Zi-Wen Liu, Kaifeng Bu, Ryuji Takagi

A fundamental approach for the characterization and quantification of all kinds of resources is to study the conversion between different resource objects under certain constraints. Here we analyze, from a resource-nonspecific standpoint, the optimal efficiency of resource formation and distillation tasks with only a single copy of the given quantum state, thereby establishing a unified framework of one-shot quantum resource manipulation. We find general bounds on the optimal rates characterized by resource measures based on the smooth max- or min-relative entropies and hypothesis testing relative entropy, as well as the free robustness measure, providing them with general operational meanings in terms of optimal state conversion. Our results encompass a wide class of resource theories via the theory-dependent coefficients we introduce, and the discussions are solidified by important examples, such as entanglement, coherence, superposition, magic states, asymmetry, and thermal nonequilibrium.

One-Shot Yield-Cost Relations in General Quantum Resource Theories

Ryuji Takagi, Bartosz Regula, Mark M. Wilde

Although it is well known that the amount of resources that can be asymptotically distilled from a quantum state or channel does not exceed the resource cost needed to produce it, the corresponding relation in the nonasymptotic regime hitherto has not been well understood. Here, we establish a quantitative relation between the one-shot distillable resource yield and dilution cost in terms of transformation errors involved in these processes.Notably, our bound is applicable to quantum state and channel manipulation with respect to any type of quantum resource and any class of free transformations thereof, encompassing broad types of settings, including entanglement, quantum thermodynamics, and quantum communication. We also show that our techniques provide strong converse bounds relating the distillable resource and the resource dilution cost in the asymptotic regime. Moreover, we introduce a class of channels that generalize the twirling maps encountered in many resource theories, and by directly connecting it with resource quantification, we compute analytically several smoothed resource measures and improve our one-shot yield-cost bound in relevant theories. We use these operational insights to exactly evaluate important measures for various resource states in the resource theory of magic states.

Tight constraints on probabilistic convertibility of quantum states

Bartosz Regula

We develop two general approaches to characterising the manipulation of quantum states by means of probabilistic protocols constrained by the limitations of some quantum resource theory. First, we give a general necessary condition for the existence of a physical transformation between quantum states, obtained using a recently introduced resource monotone based on the Hilbert projective metric. In all affine quantum resource theories (e.g. coherence, asymmetry, imaginarity) as well as in entanglement distillation, we show that the monotone provides a necessary and sufficient condition for one-shot resource convertibility under resource-non-generating operations, and hence no better restrictions on all probabilistic protocols are possible. We use the monotone to establish improved bounds on the performance of both one-shot and many-copy probabilistic resource distillation protocols. Complementing this approach, we introduce a general method for bounding achievable probabilities in resource transformations under resource-non-generating maps through a family of convex optimisation problems. We show it to tightly characterise single-shot probabilistic distillation in broad types of resource theories, allowing an exact analysis of the trade-offs between the probabilities and errors in distilling maximally resourceful states. We demonstrate the usefulness of both of our approaches in the study of quantum entanglement distillation.

Finite-Blocklength and Exponential Analyses for Universal Entanglement and Coherence Distillation under Various Free Operations

Zhiwen Lin, Ke Li, Kun Fang

Historically, entanglement and coherence distillation focused on the distillable rate under full knowledge of the initial state. In this paper, we develop a unified finite-blocklength and asymptotic theory for universal distillation from convex compact sequences of possible states stable under tensor products. We first resolve an open question by showing that two regularized variants of the generalized quantum Hoeffding divergence need not coincide, and establish fundamental properties of the Hoeffding divergence and anti-divergence. For universal entanglement distillation, we connect finite-blocklength performance under non-entangling, PPT-preserving, and dually free operations to composite correlated hypothesis testing, yielding reliability functions for non-entangling and PPT-preserving operations characterized by regularized quantum Hoeffding divergences and strong converse bounds via the anti-divergence. We recover the entanglement concentration error exponent, zero-rate exponents under a continuity condition, and distillable entanglements, and characterize the dually free cases by regularized relative entropies under restricted measurements. Additionally, five concrete noise models justify the black-box assumptions for both resources. For coherence distillation under maximally incoherent and dephasing-covariant incoherent operations, we extend the one-shot semidefinite program characterization to universal inputs; relating a relaxed optimization to hypothesis testing yields the high-rate reliability function. A coherent-seed approach extends the single-state formula to the entire direct regime when the zero-error rate is positive. Finally, we completely characterize the states with positive zero-error coherence distillation rate, show that the rate equals the order-zero Petz Rényi relative entropy of coherence, and derive dimension-independent one-shot bounds ......

Nonasymptotic assisted distillation of quantum coherence

Bartosz Regula, Ludovico Lami, Alexander Streltsov

We characterize the operational task of environment-assisted distillation of quantum coherence under different sets of free operations when only a finite supply of copies of a given state is available. We first evaluate the one-shot assisted distillable coherence exactly, and introduce a semidefinite programming bound on it in terms of a smooth entropic quantity. We prove the bound to be tight for all systems in dimensions 2 and 3, which allows us to obtain computable expressions for the one-shot rate of distillation, establish an analytical expression for the best achievable fidelity of assisted distillation for any finite number of copies, and fully solve the problem of asymptotic zero-error assisted distillation for qubit and qutrit systems. Our characterization shows that all relevant sets of free operations in the resource theory of coherence have exactly the same power in the task of one-shot assisted coherence distillation, and furthermore resolves a conjecture regarding the additivity of coherence of assistance in dimension 3.
