Towards cavity enhanced detection of single ions in the solid-state

Van Valkenhoef, Céline Hélène Ida

Entanglement between single spins and photons is an important resource in quantum information science, e.g. in quantum networking. Rare-earth ions in dielectric crystals have emerged as a promising candidate for this task. Rare-earth ion doped solids have been used so far mostly as ensemble-based quantum memories. However, they also feature promising properties for single ion detection and manipulation, such as long-lived spins, narrow optical transitions and preservation of coherence properties when inserted in nanostructures. Because of the long lifetimes of the optical t

Nondestructive photon detection using a single rare-earth ion coupled to a photonic cavity

Chris O’Brien, Tian Zhong, Andrei Faraon +1 more

We study the possibility of using single rare-earth ions coupled to a photonic cavity with high cooperativity for performing nondestructive measurements of photons, which would be useful for global quantum networks and photonic quantum computing. We calculate the achievable fidelity as a function of the parameters of the rare-earth ion and photonic cavity, which include the ion's optical and spin dephasing rates, the cavity linewidth, the single-photon coupling to the cavity, and the detection efficiency. We suggest a promising experimental realization using current state-of-the-art technology in Nd:${\mathrm{YVO}}_{4}$.

Quantum Nano-photonic Devices Based on Rare-earth Ions

Andrei Faraon

I present our progress towards developing optical quantum memories based on photonic crystal cavities fabricated in rare-earth-doped crystals. These devices exhibit large spontaneous emission rate enhancement, enabling optical control of single rare-earth ion quantum bits.
