Abstract

Abstract We investigated the influence of excitation processes of a biexciton on the generation of superfluorescence, which is pulsed radiation from coherently coupled two-level systems, from biexcitons in CuCl quantum dots. Two excitation processes of biexcitons were examined: resonant two-photon excitation of biexcitons, and resonant one-photon excitation of excitons. The excitation density dependence of the time-resolved photoluminescence was measured. The results showed that for one-photon excitation, a stronger peak intensity, longer delay time and wider pulse width were observed compared to resonant two-photon excitation. The high density of the excited dots in the one-photon excitation process results in the strong pulse, while an initial population of excitons results in a suppression of coherent coupling.

Quantum dot single-photon sources with ultra-low multi-photon probability

Lukas Hanschke, Kevin A. Fischer, Stefan Appel +7 more

Abstract High-quality sources of single photons are of paramount importance for quantum communication, sensing, and metrology. To these ends, resonantly excited two-level systems based on self-assembled quantum dots have recently generated widespread interest. Nevertheless, we have recently shown that for resonantly excited two-level systems, emission of a photon during the presence of the excitation laser pulse and subsequent re-excitation results in a degradation of the obtainable single-photon purity. Here, we demonstrate that generating single photons from self-assembled quantum dots with a scheme based on two-photon excitation of the biexciton strongly suppresses the re-excitation. Specifically, the pulse-length dependence of the multi-photon error rate reveals a quadratic dependence in contrast to the linear dependence of resonantly excited two-level systems, improving the obtainable multi-photon error rate by several orders of magnitude for short pulses. We support our experiments with a new theoretical framework and simulation methodology to understand few-photon sources.

Two-photon emission in coupled biexciton quantum dot—cavity system: Phonon-assisted model

Yiwei Peng, Zhongyuan Yu, Yumin Liu +2 more

We theoretically analyze the steady state emission spectrum and transient temporal dynamics in a coupled biexciton quantum dot (QD)—cavity system. For steady state, a phonon-assisted biexciton—exciton cascade model under continuous wave (CW) excitation is presented to explain the asymmetric QD—cavity emission spectrum intensities (intensities of cavity, exciton, and biexciton emission peak) in off-resonance condition. Results demonstrate that the electron—phonon process is crucial to the asymmetry of emission spectrum intensity. Moreover the transient characteristics of the biexciton—exciton cascade system under pulse excitation show abundant nonlinear temporal dynamic behaviors, including complicated oscillations which are caused by the four-level structure of QD model. We also reveal that under off-resonance condition the cavity outputs are slightly reduced due to the electron—phonon interaction.

Förster Blockade and Excitation Transfer Behaviors of Two-Photon Rabi Oscillations of Exciton–Biexciton Levels in Coupled Quantum Dots

Ameenah N. Al‐Ahmadi

We provide a theoretical study for the dynamical behavior of two-photon Rabi oscillations in two coupled quantum dots. Each dot is a three-level quantum system (ground, one-exciton, and biexciton states). We describe the optical dynamics within the density matrix formalism framework. The two-photon Rabi oscillations are found to be significantly affected by the strength of the interdot dipolar interaction. Using a detuned laser pulse with an exciton state of the driven quantum dot in our numerical simulations, a direct coherent excitation between the biexciton states can be established, but whether Rabi oscillations can be observed depend mainly on the strength of the dipolar interaction and bandwidth of the excitation laser. When the strength of the dipolar coupling is less than the excitation laser bandwidth, the time-dependent populations of the various two biexciton states of the system exhibit coherent oscillations with several frequencies. However, as we increase the dipolar coupling strength, the population transfer between the quantum dots levels amazingly becomes forbidden, and the excitation gets trapped at the initial state. The reduction of the influence of the dipolar interaction leads to a manipulation of two-photon Rabi oscillation in an ultrashort timescale (∼ps), opening possibilities to achieve ultrafast quantum state control and quantum logic gate generation.

Cavity effect on a biexciton in a CuCl microcavity

Yasuyoshi Mitsumori, Shimpei Matsuura, Shoichi Uchiyama +2 more

We studied the population and coherence dynamics of a biexciton in a planar CuCl microcavity. We developed a time-resolved two-photon polarization spectroscopy technique, by which we extracted the population dynamics of the biexciton even when the biexciton was spectrally overlapped with the lower cavity polariton. The observed lifetime of the cavity biexciton in the weak-coupling regime was much shorter than that of a bare CuCl thin film without a cavity, which directly demonstrates cavity enhancement of the radiative decay rate of the biexciton. The cavity enhancement originates from the hybridization of the unbound two-cavity-polariton state to the biexciton wave function by the biexciton-cavity coupling. By comparing the population and coherence decay curves of the biexciton, we found that the coherence of the cavity biexciton was limited by the radiative population decay.

Coherence and degree of time-bin entanglement from quantum dots

Tobias Huber, Laurin Ostermann, Maximilian Prilmüller +4 more

We report a study on coherence of excitation of single quantum dots. We address the coherent excitation of biexcitons, the process that is indispensable for deterministic photon pair generation in quantum dots. Based on theoretical modeling we optimized the duration of the excitation pulse in our experiment to minimize the laser-induced dephasing and increase the biexciton-to-background single-exciton occupation probability. An additional effect of this approach is a high degree of time-bin entanglement with a concurrence of up to 0.78(6) and a 0.88(3) overlap with a maximally entangled state.
