Abstract

Abstract Mott transition in a ruby lattice with fermions described by the Hubbard model including on-site repulsive interaction is investigated by combining the cellular dynamical mean-field theory and the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. The effect of temperature and on-site repulsive interaction on the metallic–insulating phase transition in ruby lattice with fermions is discussed based on the density of states and double occupancy. In addition, the magnetic property of each phase is discussed by defining certain magnetic order parameters. Our results show that the antiferromagnetic metal is found at the low temperature and weak interaction region and the antiferromagnetic insulating phase is found at the low temperature and strong interaction region. The paramagnetic metal appears in whole on-site repulsive interaction region when the temperature is higher than a certain value and the paramagnetic insulator appears at the middle scale of temperature and on-site repulsive interaction.

Mott transition of fermions in anisotropic ruby lattice

An Bao

In this work, the Hubbard model is adopted to describe fermions with on-site repulsive interaction and the nearest-neighbor hopping in anisotropic ruby lattice. The combination of cluster dynamical mean field theory and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm is used to solve the theoretical model. It is widely accepted that the density of states and the double occupancy are two important quantities for determining the phase transition of two-dimensional strongly correlated system. Therefore, based on the self-consistent calculation, using the maximum entropy method to calculate the single particle density of states and double occupancy of fermions in anisotropic ruby lattice. Here in this work, there are 6 sites in a cluster. The influences of temperature, interaction and anisotropic parameter on metal-insulator phase transition of fermions in anisotropic ruby lattice are discussed based on the calculations of single particle density of state and double occupancy. Finally, the metal-Mott insulator phase diagram which shows the competition between temperature and on-site repulsive interaction in the phase transition of fermions in anisotropic ruby lattice is presented. The results shows that the system is in metallic state for the regime of weak interaction and low temperature, and the Mott insulator appears in the regime of strong interaction and high temperature. The metallic state and Mott insulating one are separated by the second-order transition line in the phase diagram.

Mott transition and antiferromagnetism of cold fermions in the decorated honeycomb lattice

Heng-Fu Lin, Yao‐Hua Chen, Haidi Liu +2 more

We investigate two-component ultracold fermions loaded in a decorated honeycomb lattice described by the Hubbard model with repulsive interactions and nearest-neighbor hopping. The phase transitions are studied by combining the cellular dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. For weak interactions, the quadratic band crossing point is broken to a linear band crossing point and the system becomes a semimetal. With increasing interaction, the system undergoes a first-order phase transition to an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at low temperatures. Below the critical temperature, due to the charge nematic fluctuation, a nematic metal forms between the semimetal and the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. The effects of lattice anisotropy are also addressed. Furthermore, we discuss how to detect these phases in real experiments.

Quantum phase transitions in two-dimensional strongly correlated fermion systems

An Bao, Yao‐Hua Chen, Heng-Fu Lin +2 more

In this article, we review our recent work on quantum phase transition in two-dimensional strongly correlated fermion systems. We discuss the metal–insulator transition properties of these systems by calculating the density of states, double occupancy, and Fermi surface evolution using a combination of the cellular dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT) and the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. Furthermore, we explore the magnetic properties of each state by defining magnetic order parameters. Rich phase diagrams with many intriguing quantum states, including antiferromagnetic metal, paramagnetic metal, Kondo metal, and ferromagnetic insulator, were found for the two-dimensional lattices with strongly correlated fermions. We believe that our results would lead to a better understanding of the properties of real materials.

Phase diagram of the square lattice bilayer Hubbard model: a variational Monte Carlo study

Rüger, R., Luca F. Tocchio, Valenti, R. +1 more

Abstract. We investigate the phase diagram of the square lattice bilayer Hubbard model at half filling with the variational Monte Carlo method for both the magnetic and the paramagnetic case as a function of the interlayer hopping t ⊥ and on-site Coulomb repulsion U. With this study we resolve some discrepancies in previous calculations based on the dynamical mean field theory, and we are able to determine the nature of the phase transitions between metal, Mott insulator and band insulator. In the magnetic case we find only two phases: An antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at small t ⊥ for any value of U and a band insulator at large t⊥. At large U values we approach the Heisenberg limit. The paramagnetic phase diagram shows at small t ⊥ a metal to Mott insulator transition at moderate U values and a Mott to band insulator transition at larger U values. We also observe a re-entrant Mott insulator to metal transition and metal to band insulator transition for increasing t ⊥ in the range of 5.5t < U < 7.5t. Finally, we discuss the obtained phase diagrams in relation to previous studies based on different many-body approaches. PACS numbers: 71.10.Fd, 71.27.+a, 71.30.+h 1.

Finite-temperature phase transitions in the ionic Hubbard model

Aaram J. Kim, M. Y. Choi, Gun Sang Jeon

We investigate paramagnetic metal-insulator transitions in the infinite-dimensional ionic Hubbard model at finite temperatures. By means of the dynamical mean-field theory with an impurity solver of the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method, we show that an increase in the interaction strength brings about a crossover from a band insulating phase to a metallic one, followed by a first-order transition to a Mott insulating phase. The first-order transition turns into a crossover above a certain critical temperature, which becomes higher as the staggered lattice potential is increased. Further, analysis of the temperature dependence of the energy density discloses that the intermediate metallic phase is a Fermi liquid. It is also found that the metallic phase is stable against strong staggered potentials even at very low temperatures.

Effect of interaction and temperature on quantum phase transition in anisotropic square-octagon lattice

An Bao, Xuefeng Zhang, Xiaozhong Zhang

We investigate the effect of interaction, temperature, and anisotropic parameter on the quantum phase transitions in an anisotropic square-octagon lattice with fermions under the framework of the single band Hubbard model through using the combination of cellular dynamical mean field theory and a continuous time Monte Carlo algorithm. The competition between interaction and temperature shows that with the increase of the anisotropic parameter, the critical on-site repulsive interaction for the metal–insulator transition increases for fixed temperature. The interaction–anisotropic parameter phase diagram reveals that with the decrease of temperature, the critical anisotropic parameter for the Mott transition will increase for fixed interaction cases.
