Abstract

In quantum lattice models, in the large-$N$ limit, boundary conditions have little effect upon local observables for sites in the centers of the lattices. In this paper, we will study the boundary effects upon multipartite nonlocality (a kind of multipartite quantum correlation associated with Bell-type inequalities) in one-dimensional finite-size spin chains, both for zero temperature and for finite temperatures. We define a quantity $\frac{\ensuremath{\delta}\mathcal{S}}{\mathcal{S}}$ to characterize the boundary effects, where $\mathcal{S}$ is a measure of global multipartite nonlocality of the entire lattice, and $\ensuremath{\delta}\mathcal{S}$ is the difference of the measure induced by changing the boundary conditions. We find $\frac{\ensuremath{\delta}\mathcal{S}}{\mathcal{S}}$ does not vanish in the large-$N$ limit. Instead, at zero temperature, with the increase of $N$, $\frac{\ensuremath{\delta}\mathcal{S}}{\mathcal{S}}$ would increase steadily in the vicinity of the quantum phase transition point of the models, and converge to a nonzero constant in noncritical regions. It shows clearly that boundary effects generally exist, in the form of multipartite correlations, in long chains. The boundary effects are explained by the competition between the two orders of the models. In addition, based on these numerical results, we construct a Bell inequality, which is violated by chains with periodic (closed) boundary conditions and not violated by chains with open boundary conditions. Furthermore, we study $\frac{\ensuremath{\delta}{\mathcal{S}}_{T}}{{\mathcal{S}}_{T}}$ of finite-size chains at finite temperatures, and show that boundary effects survive in finite temperature regions.

Multipartite quantum nonlocality and Bell-type inequalities in a spin-1/2 model with topological quantum phase transitions

Zhao‐Yu Sun, Hui-Xin Wen, Meng Li +1 more

Multipartite quantum nonlocality and Bell-type inequalities are used to characterize quantum correlations in an infinite-size bond-alternating spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbor interactions. With the help of powerful tensor-network algorithms, both zero and finite temperatures are considered. First, at zero temperature, both in the even-Haldane phase and in the odd-Haldane phase, a high hierarchy of multipartite nonlocality is observed. Nevertheless, in the two phases, the spread of the multipartite nonlocality among the lattice is different. Thereby, the nonlocality measures are relatively large in one phase and vanish in the other phase, and provide quite sharp signals for the topological quantum phase transitions (QPTs) between these two phases. The influence of the next-nearest-neighbor coupling $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ upon the multipartite nonlocality in the model is also discussed. Second, we find that the footprints of the QPTs survive at low temperatures. Third, based upon the scaling behavior of the finite-temperature nonlocality measure, we propose a quantity $\mathcal{K}$ to characterize the finite-temperature nonlocality in the large-$n$ limit. We find that in high-temperature regions, $\mathcal{K}$ is reduced linearly as the temperature rises.

Global multipartite nonlocality and Bell-type inequalities in infinite-size quantum spin chains

Zhao‐Yu Sun, Bin Guo, Hailin Huang

In this paper, we characterize the global multipartite nonlocality in one-dimensional infinite-size spin-1/2 chains. For this purpose, we calculate the multipartite nonlocality of $n$-site subchains, and take the large-$n$ limit. As $n$ increases from 2 to 100, we find that the average revenue and the marginal revenue of nonlocality converge gradually, thus they can be used to characterize the global multipartite nonlocality in infinite-size chains. Furthermore, in the vicinity of the quantum phase transition (QPT) points of the transverse-field Ising model and the $\mathit{XXZ}$ model, in the large-$n$ limit, multipartite nonlocality becomes extremely sensitive to external perturbation, that is, arbitrarily small perturbation away from the QPT points would lead to a drastic change in the global nonlocality. This signal of QPTs is easily distinguishable, and can be used to detect QPTs. We also draw a vivid physical picture of multipartite correlations and QPTs by analogy with magnetic domains in ferromagnets.

Multipartite quantum nonlocality and Bell-type inequalities in an infinite-order quantum phase transition of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain

Zhao‐Yu Sun, Shuang Liu, Hailin Huang +7 more

In this paper, using the infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) algorithm and Bell-type inequalities, we investigate multipartite quantum nonlocality in an infinite one-dimensional quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2} XXZ$ system. High hierarchy of multipartite nonlocality can be observed in the gapless phase of the model, while only the lowest hierarchy of multipartite nonlocality is observed in most regions of the gapped antiferromagnetic phase. Thereby, Bell-type inequalities disclose different correlation structures in the two phases of the system. Furthermore, at the infinite-order quantum phase transition (QPT, or Kosterlitz-Thouless QPT) point of the model, the correlation measures always show a local minimum value, regardless of the length of the subchains. It indicates that relatively low hierarchy of multipartite nonlocality would be observed at the infinite-order QPT point in a Bell-type experiment. The result is in contrast to the existing results of the second-order QPT in the one-dimensional $XY$ model, where multipartite nonlocality with the highest hierarchy has been observed. Thus, multipartite nonlocality provides an alternative perspective to distinguish between these two kinds of QPTs. Reliable clues for the existence of tripartite quantum entanglement have also been found.

Multipartite nonlocality in one-dimensional quantum spin chains at finite temperatures

Zhao‐Yu Sun, Meng Li, Long-Hui Sheng +1 more

Multipartite nonlocality is an important measure of multipartite quantum correlations. In this paper, we show that the nonlocal $n$-site Mermin-Klyshko operator ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{M}}_{n}$ can be exactly expressed as a matrix product operator with a bond dimension $D=2$, and then the calculation of nonlocality measure $\mathcal{S}$ can be simplified into standard one-dimensional (1D) tensor networks. With the help of this technique, we analyze finite-temperature multipartite nonlocality in several typical 1D spin chains, including an $XX$ model, an $XXZ$ model, and a Kitaev model. For the $XX$ model and the $XXZ$ model, in a finite-temperature region, the logarithm measure of nonlocality (${log}_{2}\mathcal{S}$) is a linear function of the temperature $T$, i.e., ${log}_{2}\mathcal{S}\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{-}aT+b$. It provides us with an intuitive picture about how thermodynamic fluctuations destroy multipartite nonlocality in 1D quantum chains. Moreover, in the $XX$ model $\mathcal{S}$ presents a magnetic-field-induced oscillation at low temperatures. This behavior has a nonlocal nature and cannot be captured by local properties such as the magnetization. Finally, for the Kitaev model, we find that in the limit $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ and $N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ the nonlocality measure may be used as an alternative order parameter for the topological-type quantum phase transition in the model.

Characterization of quantum phase transition in the XY model with multipartite correlations and Bell-type inequalities

Zhao‐Yu Sun, Yu-Yin Wu, Jian Xu +4 more

The ground state of interacting spin chains in external magnetic fields can undergo a quantum phase transition (QPT) characterized by dramatic changes at a critical value of the magnetic field. In this paper, we use Bell-type inequalities to study the multipartite correlations (including multipartite entanglement and multipartite nonlocality in an $n$-spin subsystem) in the QPT of an infinite $XY$ chain. An efficient numerical optimization procedure is proposed to figure out the violation measure ${M}_{n}$ of the inequalities. For $n\ensuremath{\le}7$, the magnetic-field ($\ensuremath{\lambda}$) dependence of ${M}_{n}$ is studied. We find the derivative of ${M}_{n}$ is divergent exactly at the QPT point ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}=1$ for any $n$. In addition, with the increase of $n$, ${M}_{n}$ converges quickly for $\ensuremath{\lambda}<{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}$ and converges very slowly for $\ensuremath{\lambda}>{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}$, which can be regarded as another signal for the QPT. Furthermore, in the vicinity of ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}$, high-order Bell-type inequalities will be violated as long as $n$ is large enough. This indicates that high-level multipartite correlation will be present when the system is in the vicinity of the QPT point. Nevertheless, genuine $n$-partite entanglement or genuine $n$-partite nonlocality is not observed in the QPT.

Intrinsic Mirror Symmetry and Robustness of Optimal Nonlocal Operators in One-Dimensional Quantum Spin Chains

Jia Bao, Bin Guo, Shu Qu +3 more

Multipartite nonlocality has been extensively investigated within one-dimensional quantum lattices. Previous research has primarily focused on the nonlocality measure $S$, which quantifies the violation of Bell-type inequalities. However, the optimal nonlocal operators, which are related to specific experimental settings required to achieve the violation, often remain elusive. In this work, we employ a string-like nonlocal operator $\hat{S}_N$, characterized by a core single-site operator $\hat{p}$, to investigate the optimal measurement setting in translationally invariant quantum chains. By analyzing the infinite-size transverse-field Ising, Cluster-Ising, and extended Ising models, we uncover two general results. First, for typical ground states, we find that the optimal single-site operator $\hat{p}$ possesses an intrinsic mirror symmetry. Second, the optimal nonlocal operator $\hat{S}(\hat{p})$ exhibits remarkable robustness: for a specific model, as the Hamiltonian parameter changes, the structure of $\hat{p}$ remains stable and persists across distinct quantum phases. These findings not only redefine the numerical optimization paradigm for multipartite nonlocality, but also significantly simplify the experimental requirements by identifying fixed measurement bases. This structural stability provides practical guidance for implementing macroscopic Bell tests in large-scale quantum simulators, making it highly compatible with modern efficient measurement protocols.
