Temporal interference effects in noncollinear and frequency-nondegenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, A A Sysoeva, Stephen Vintskevich +1 more

We consider regimes of spontaneous parametric down-conversion, both noncollinear and nondegenerate in frequencies. Parameters characterizing degrees of noncollinearity and of nondegeneracy are defined, and they are shown to be not independent of each other. At a given degree of nondegeneracy the emitted photons are shown to propagate along two different cones, the opening angles of which are determined by the degree of nondegeneracy. Based on this, the degree of nondegeneracy can be controlled by means of the angular selection of photons, e.g., with the help of appropriately installed slits. For such selected photons their wave functions are found depending on two frequencies or on two temporal variables. Interference effects arising in such states are tested by analysis of the Hong-Ou-Mandel--type scheme with a varying delay time in one of two channels and with photons from two channels sent to the beamsplitter. The temporal pictures arising after the beamsplitter are found to demonstrate extremely strong interference, exhibiting itself in formation of finite-size temporal combs filled with quantum beats. Parameters of combs depend on the degree of nondegeneracy, and the physical reasons for this dependence are clarified.

Hong-Ou-Mandel Effect Between a Thermal Field and a Heralded Single-Photon State: Improved Visibility by Multiphoton Components

Anahita Khodadad Kashi, Lucia Caspani, Michael Kues

The heralding technique has been widely deployed as a statistical approach to approximate deterministic single-photon states from the spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) process. As necessary for the two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect, the single frequency mode preparation of heralded single-photon states – which can be achieved by removing frequency correlations – introduces thermal characteristics to the heralded state, whose impact on the HOM visibility has not been explicitly studied so far.

Selective Control of Fourth-Order Interferences by means of Comb-Like Two-Photon Entangled States

Alessandro Zavatta

We experimentally show the selective control of fourth‐order recurrent interferences in a modified version of a Hong‐Ou‐Mandel interferometer using comb‐like two‐photon states. The comb spectral/temporal structure is obtained by inserting an etalon cavity in the signal path of an entangled photon pair obtained by pulsed spontaneous parametric down‐conversion.
