Trapping and Absorbing Set Enumerators for Protograph-Based Generalized Low-Density Parity-Check Code Ensembles

Emna Ben Yacoub

Generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) codes have outstanding performance outperforming the standard low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. However, the performance of these codes under iterative decoding can be degraded because of the presence of trapping, absorbing and fully absorbing sets in the code Tanner graphs. The (elementary) trapping and (fully) absorbing sets of protograph-based GLDPC codes are studied. The finite-length and asymptotic distributions of (elementary) trapping and (fully) absorbing sets for protograph-based GLDPC code ensembles are derived and evaluated. The asymptotic distributions can be efficiently computed by solving a system of equations. The relative minimum Δ-trapping/(fully) absorbing set size can be directly computed by adding one equation to the system of equations. This is useful for the code design where we can restrict the search to ensembles for which the minimum Δ-trapping and (fully) absorbing set sizes grow linearly with the blocklength. The normalized logarithmic asymptotic distributions of (elementary) trapping and (fully) absorbing sets for an example GLDPC code ensemble are evaluated.

Exact free distance and trapping set growth rates for LDPC convolutional codes

David G. M. Mitchell, Alí Emre Pusane, Michael Lentmaier +1 more

Ensembles of (J,K)-regular low-density parity-check convolutional (LDPCC) codes are known to be asymptotically good, in the sense that the minimum free distance grows linearly with the constraint length. In this paper, we use a protograph-based analysis of terminated LDPCC codes to obtain an upper bound on the free distance growth rate of ensembles of periodically time-varying LDPCC codes. This bound is compared to a lower bound and evaluated numerically. It is found that, for a sufficiently large period, the bounds coincide. This approach is then extended to obtain bounds on the trapping set numbers, which define the size of the smallest, non-empty trapping sets, for these asymptotically good, periodically time-varying LDPCC code ensembles.

Generalized LDPC codes and generalized stopping sets

N. Miladinovic, M.P.C. Fossorier

A generalized low-density parity check code (GLDPC) is a low-density parity check code in which the constraint nodes of the code graph are block codes, rather than single parity checks. In this paper, we study GLDPC codes which have BCH or Reed-Solomon codes as subcodes under bounded distance decoding (BDD). The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated in the limit case of an infinite length (cycle free) code used over a binary erasure channel (BEC) and the corresponding thresholds for iterative decoding are derived. The performance of the proposed scheme for finite code lengths over a BEC is investigated as well. Structures responsible for decoding failures are defined and a theoretical analysis over the ensemble of GLDPC codes which yields exact bit and block error rates of the ensemble average is derived. Unfortunately this study shows that GLDPC codes do not compare favorably with their LDPC counterpart over the BEC. Fortunately, it is also shown that under certain conditions, objects identified in the analysis of GLDPC codes over a BEC and the corresponding theoretical results remain useful to derive tight lower bounds on the performance of GLDPC codes over a binary symmetric channel (BSC). Simulation results show that the proposed method yields competitive performance with a good decoding complexity trade-off for the BSC.
