Quantification de la charge et criticalité quantique Kondo dans des circuits mésoscopiques avec peu de canaux

Zubair Iftikhar

This thesis explores several fundamental topics in mesoscopic circuitry that incorporates few electronic conduction channels. The first experiments address the quantized character (the discreteness) of charge in circuits. We demonstrate the charge quantization criterion, observe the predicted charge quantization scaling and demonstrate a crossover toward a universal behavior as temperature is increased. The second set of experiments addresses the unconventional quantum critical physics that arises in the multichannel Kondo model. By implementing a Kondo impurity with a pseudo-spin of ½ constituted by two degenerate charge states of a circuit, we explore the two- and three-channel Kondo physics. At the symmetric quantum critical point, we observe the predicted universal Kondo fixed points, scaling exponents and validate the full numerical renormalization group scaling curves. Away from the quantum critical point, we explore the crossover from quantum criticality: direct visualization of the development of a quantum phase transition, the parameter space for quantum criticality, as well as universality and scaling behaviors.

Probing quantum criticality with scanning tunneling spectroscopy

Minh-Tien Tran, Ki‐Seok Kim

We investigate the role of quantum coherence in tunneling conductance, where quantum criticality turns out to suppress Fano resonance. Based on the nonequilibrium noncrossing approximation, we show that the linear tunneling conductance exhibits weak Fano line shape with sharp cusp at zero energy in the multichannel Kondo effect resulting from incoherence associated with quantum criticality of impurity dynamics. In particular, shift of the peak position in the Fano resonance is predicted not to occur for the multichannel Kondo effect distinguished from the Fermi-liquid theory in the single-channel Kondo effect.

Quantum thermoelectric and heat transport in the overscreened Kondo regime: Exact conformal field theory results

D. B. Karki, Mikhail N. Kiselev

We develop a conformal field theory approach for investigation of the quantum charge, heat, and thermoelectric transport through a quantum impurity fine-tuned to a non-Fermi liquid regime. The non-Fermi-liquid operational mode is associated with the overscreened spin Kondo effect and controlled by the number of orbital channels. The universal low-temperature scaling and critical exponents for Seebeck and Peltier coefficients are investigated for the multichannel geometry. We discuss the universality of Lorenz ratio and power factor beyond the Fermi-liquid paradigm. Different methods of verifying our findings based on the recent experiments are proposed.
