‘Quantum effects’ for classical light in modern waveguide circuits

Anna V. Bogatskaya, N. V. Klenov, Maxim V Tereshonok +1 more

Abstract Here we use approaches and concepts from quantum mechanics in order to analyze the propagation of classical electromagnetic waves in the elements of integrated optical circuits. These waveguide circuits are considered as potential wells between complex-shapes barriers formed by opaque media. This allowed us to construct in the framework of the slow-varying amplitude approximation for the wave equation an analogy between coherent oscillations in a quantum system and the redistribution in space of the field strength of a classical wave. We also demonstrated the methods to control the mode composition of a classical light in a spatially inhomogeneous waveguide structure. The proposed description was based on the analogy with Rabi-type oscillations in quantum mechanics.

Generation and coherent control of dark-state spatial modes

Huai-Che Shia, Siang-Wei Shao, Wu-Cheng Chiang +6 more

The generation and dynamic control of the spatial mode of the dark-state polarization using electromagnetically induced transparency are theoretically investigated. We demonstrate that a combination of synthetic scalar and vector potentials can be employed to engineer discrete spatial modes of the dark-state polariton, enabling quantum interference among these modes. We verify this concept by showing the Rabi oscillation between two spatial modes and stimulated Raman adiabatic passage among Λ-type three modes. Our approach allows for the reallocation of stored photonic data from one location to another, presenting potential applications such as photonic-memory optimization and retrieved light modulation.

Squeezing properties of two-mode atom laser in a system of Ξ-type three-level atomic Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with single-mode light field

Nong Chun-Xuan, Ming Li, Chen Cui-Ling

The squeezing properties of the two-mode atom laser in a system of Ξ-type three-level atomic Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with single-mode squeezed coherent light field are studied. The results show that the two-mode atom laser can be squeezed periodically, and has two types of oscillations: quantum Rabi oscillation and collapse-revival oscillation. The maximum depth of squeezing and the collapse-revival frequency of the atom laser depend greatly on the interaction intensity between the light field and atoms, and the quantum Rabi frequency is largely determined by the frequency of the light field.
