Interplay between strong and weak measurement: comparison of three experimental approaches to weak value estimation

Jan Roik, Karel Lemr, Antonín Černoch +1 more

Abstract Weak values are traditionally obtained using a weak interaction between the measured system and a pointer state. It has, however, been pointed out that weak coupling can be replaced by a carefully tailored strong interaction. This paper provides a direct comparison of two strong interaction-based approaches (strong interaction accompanied by either a suitably prepared pointer state or quantum erasure) and the traditional weak interaction-based method. The presented theoretical derivations explicitly prove analytical equivalence of these approaches, which were subsequently certified by an experiment implemented on the platform of linear optics. We find that strong-interaction-based measurements are experimentally less demanding on this platform.

Theoretical investigation of the relations between pointer-induced quantum decoherence and the weak-to-strong measurement transition

Xiao-Feng Song, Shuang Liu, Xi-Hao Chen +1 more

This paper delves into the crucial aspects of pointer-induced quantum decoherence and the transition between von Neumann's projective strong measurement and Aharonov's weak measurement. Both phenomena significantly impact the dynamical understanding of quantum measurement processes. Specifically, we focus on the interplay between quantum decoherence and the transition from weak to strong measurement by deducing and comparing the quantum decoherence and weak-to-strong measurement transition factors within a general model and using the well-known Stern-Gerlach experiment as an illustrative example. Our findings reveal that both phenomena can be effectively characterized by a universal factor intricately linked to the coupling between the measured system and the pointer. The analysis presented in our current work can clarify the mechanism behind the relations of pointer-induced quantum decoherence to the weak measurement and weak-to-strong measurement transition.

Decoherence effects on weak value measurements in double quantum dots

Mark Thomas, Alessandro Romito

We study the effect of decoherence on a weak value measurement in a paradigm system consisting of a double quantum dot continuously measured by a quantum point contact. Fluctuations of the parameters controlling the dot state induce decoherence. We find that, for measurements longer than the decoherence time, weak values are always reduced within the range of the eigenvalues of the measured observable. For measurements at shorter time scales, the measured weak value strongly depends on the interplay between the decoherence dynamics of the system and the detector backaction. In particular, depending on the postselected state and the strength of the decoherence, a more frequent classical readout of the detector might lead to an enhancement of weak values.
