Entanglement : reimaging the crystal-image through the quantum lens

Abstract

What is a photograph? What can a photograph be? This doctorate synthesises quantum theory and post-structuralist discourse, within a media-arts context, to examine photography in new ways. Rather than the conventionally held view of the photograph as a static, purely material object, this exegesis argues that the photograph is better understood as a relational, fluctuating process. The identity of photography, its operation and the resulting formal and narrative consequences are the main areas of this inquiry. The original contribution that this doctorate makes towards research and creative practice is to provide a unique understanding of how photography operates through the philosophical lens of quantum science. Quantum theories such as ‘entanglement’, the ‘many-worlds interpretation’, the ‘uncertainty principle’ and ‘nonlocality’ are employed to consider photography as a destabilised and diffuse medium. Gilles Deleuze’s concept of the ‘crystal-image’ (1989) is applied to explore these questions within a media-arts setting. In this context, the actual and virtual converge, the real and the imaginary entwine, and the photographer, subject and spectator merge with the image itself. Together, quantum theory and Deleuzian post-structuralist discourse are engaged to reveal photography as an indeterminate and open-ended assemblage. The practice-led component of this doctorate, Duplicity, is a large-scale, site-specific photomedia installation that embodies these ideas. Out of this work, the concept of the intra-image is proposed as a novel interpretation of the photographic image – one that is fragmented, entangled and relational. This research aims to contribute towards work by scholars and image-makers operating in the domain of photomedia, within a media-arts context.

Title: Quantum Information Super-Resolution Computation

Jincheng Zhang

Quantum information processing has emerged as a transformative technology with significant potential across diverse fields, including image processing and data analysis. This paper presents a novel approach to super-resolution computation leveraging the unique properties of quantum information – specifically, superposition and entanglement – to achieve significantly improved results compared to classical methods. We propose a new algorithm that utilizes a quantum-enhanced measurement process to precisely determine pixel values, ultimately leading to enhanced image reconstruction and data interpretation. The core claim of this work is the design of a quantum-informed super-resolution algorithm that surpasses current state-of-the-art performance, particularly in scenarios demanding high-fidelity image reconstruction. This research explores the potential of quantum entanglement and superposition to address challenges inherent in traditional super-resolution techniques. We will detail the underlying mathematical framework, provide a simplified implementation, and discuss the theoretical implications of this approach.

Beyond the clouds and watches: the idea of science David Bohm and Ilya Prigogine

Rodrigo França Carvalho

Our thesis consists in analyzing, based on theories of the American quantum physicist David Bohm (1917-1992) and the Russian physical chemist, naturalized Belgian, Ilya Prigogine (1917-2003), the science ideas of these two scientists, how they represent authentic scientific views, quite deviating from the prevailing view of science, and also how their concepts contribute to overcoming long dichotomies that have been present in the history of science since a long time, such as determinism-indeterminism antithesis. Through a critical biographical analysis, we present the main aspects of scientific research work of Bohm, his formulation of an alternative interpretation of quantum theory, which has ignited debates and controversies within the world of quanta, his several theoretical contributions, including the theory of plasma, the development of an innovative theory called implicit and explicit order and also his philosophical investigations. We also present and analyze the scientific way of Prigogine and his theoretical interest in non-equilibrium thermodynamics. We show the fundamentals of his theory of dissipative structures, his unique insight into the irreversible phenomena and the most significant implications of this new view of nature and science that led him to the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1977. Although several important differences between theoretical perspectives and Bohm and Prigogine approach, we noted some similar points that were quite significant, as a concept of science radically different from the prevailing idealized view. Among these similarities we have the search for a unity between man and nature, the importance given to the conception of science without dissociating it from the deepest philosophical questions and the concern about establishing more fruitful dialogues among areas of knowledge.

The dance of the mind: physique et métaphysique chez Gilles Deleuze et David Bohm = The dance of the mind: physics and metaphysics in Gilles Deleuze and David Bohm

Alberto Gualandi

Over and above differences in terminology and cultural background, we try to show that the quantum physicist, David Bohm (Wilkes-Barre 1917 – London 1992), and poststructuralist philosopher, Gilles Deleuze (Paris 1925 – Paris 1995), shared a common aim in thought: to replace the classical (mechanistic) image of reality, which is still dominant in our time, with a metaphysics finally in agreement with the concepts and results of relativity, quantum mechanics and contemporary biology. For these two thinkers, the world of things that are well individuated in space and time, and ordered according to mechanical relations of cause and effect, are nothing but the momentary expression of an “undivided wholeness in flowing movement” that constitutes its true ontological ground. By means of this new metaphysics, the world of daily experience and classical science appears as the explicit manifestation or development of implicate order that undivided wholeness contains virtually in itself at deeper and deeper levels of envelopment and imbrication. The explicit world (of classical science and daily experience) is the result of a process of repetition, deceleration and temporal stabilization, triggered by the interaction of our measuring instruments – technical devices, sensory organs and motors, a priori forms and categories of the understanding – with moving wholeness, the thinking and observing subject of which represents a momentary and partial reflection rather than a solitary and autonomous fragment. By criticizing the classical image of the correspondence/adequation of being and thought, Bohm and Deleuze show that the thought seeking to grasp this wholeness in flowing movement inevitably interacts with it – by modifying, recreating and accomplishing it in one direction rather than another. Thought thus resembles a dance that tries to harmonize with the universal flux that generates and carries it away in a single movement with matter

THE QUANTUM WORLD: UNDERSTANDING QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT

Iqbal Ahmed, Hafiz Muhammad Ali, Amna Saghir

Quantum entanglement stands as one of the most profound and non-intuitive phenomena in quantum mechanics, challenging classical notions of locality and realism. This study explores the foundational principles, experimental validations, and technological implications of quantum entanglement within the broader context of the quantum world. Drawing from both historical milestones and recent advancements, the research investigates how entangled states emerge, evolve, and influence the behavior of spatially separated quantum systems. Using a mixed-methods approach that integrates theoretical analysis with quantitative simulation, this paper demonstrates how entanglement defies classical correlations by revealing statistical patterns that violate Bell-type inequalities. Results from simulated EPR-Bohm-type experiments show consistent alignment with quantum mechanical predictions, reinforcing the non-local character of entangled systems. Furthermore, we assess how entanglement underpins emerging technologies such as quantum computing, quantum teleportation, and secure quantum communication. Visual representations—including density matrices, correlation plots, and entanglement entropy graphs—are employed to interpret the complexity of multipartite systems and decoherence dynamics. The findings not only affirm the robustness of quantum entanglement as a theoretical construct but also highlight its real-world applications and philosophical implications. Ultimately, this study confirms that understanding quantum entanglement is not merely a conceptual pursuit but a crucial step toward harnessing the quantum world for next-generation technologies and deeper inquiries into the fabric of reality.
