Abstract

The entanglement spectrum was calculated for a contiguous block of spins in a Kitaev chain with a power law decay of interactions. Changes in the degeneracies of the four largest eigenvalues of the spectrum identify the quantum critical line separating the paramagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic phases of the model. Effective central charges along the critical lines are calculated by analyzing the finite-size scaling of the entanglement entropy with block length. For power law exponents that correspond to short-ranged interactions the effective central charge is that of free-fermionic models. For longer ranged interactions the obtained central charge deviates from this value.

Entanglement properties of disordered quantum spin chains with long-range antiferromagnetic interactions

Y. Mohdeb, Javad Vahedi, N. Moure +5 more

Entanglement measures are useful tools in characterizing otherwise unknown quantum phases and indicating transitions between them. Here we examine the concurrence and entanglement entropy in quantum spin chains with random long-range couplings, spatially decaying with a power-law exponent $\ensuremath{\alpha}$. Using the strong disorder renormalization group (SDRG) technique, we find by analytical solution of the master equation a strong disorder fixed point, characterized by a fixed point distribution of the couplings with a finite dynamical exponent, which describes the system consistently in the regime $\ensuremath{\alpha}>\frac{1}{2}$. A numerical implementation of the SDRG method yields a power-law spatial decay of the average concurrence, which is also confirmed by exact numerical diagonalization. However, we find that the lowest-order SDRG approach is not sufficient to obtain the typical value of the concurrence. We therefore implement a correction scheme which allows us to obtain the leading-order corrections to the random singlet state. This approach yields a power-law spatial decay of the typical value of the concurrence, which we derive both by a numerical implementation of the corrections and by analytics. Next, using numerical SDRG, the entanglement entropy (EE) is found to be logarithmically enhanced for all $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, corresponding to a critical behavior with an effective central charge $c=\mathrm{ln}(2)$, independent of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$. This is confirmed by an analytical derivation. Using numerical exact diagonalization (ED), we confirm the logarithmic enhancement of the EE and a weak dependence on $\ensuremath{\alpha}$. For a wide range of partition size $l$, the EE fits a critical behavior with a central charge close to $c=1$, which is the same as for the clean Haldane-Shastry model with a power-law-decaying interaction with $\ensuremath{\alpha}=2$. Only for small $l\ensuremath{\ll}L$, in a range which increases with the number of spins $N$, we find deviations which are rather consistent with the strong disorder fixed point central charge $c=\mathrm{ln}(2)$. Furthermore, we find using ED that the concurrence shows power-law decay, albeit with smaller power exponents than obtained by SDRG. We also present results obtained with DMRG and find agreement with ED for sufficiently small $\ensuremath{\alpha}<2$, whereas for larger $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ DMRG tends to underestimate the entanglement entropy and finds a faster decaying concurrence.

Entanglement entropy of aperiodic quantum spin chains

Ferenc Iglói, Róbert Juhász, Zoltán Zimborás

We study the entanglement entropy of blocks of contiguous spins in non-periodic (quasi-periodic or more generally aperiodic) critical Heisenberg, XX and quantum Ising spin chains, e.g. in Fibonacci chains. For marginal and relevant aperiodic modulations, the entanglement entropy is found to be a logarithmic function of the block size with log-periodic oscillations. The effective central charge, c eff , defined through the constant in front of the logarithm may depend on the ratio of couplings and can even exceed the corresponding value in the homogeneous system. In the strong modulation limit, the ground state is constructed by a renormalization group method and the limiting value of c eff is exactly calculated. Keeping the ratio of the block size and the system size constant, the entanglement entropy exhibits a scaling property, however, the corresponding scaling function may be nonanalytic.

Entanglement entropy in aperiodic singlet phases

Róbert Juhász, Zoltán Zimborás

We study the average entanglement entropy of blocks of contiguous spins in aperiodic XXZ chains which possess an aperiodic singlet phase at least in a certain limit of the coupling ratios. In this phase, where the ground state constructed by a real space renormalization group method consists (asymptotically) of independent singlet pairs, the average entanglement entropy is found to be a piecewise linear function of the block size. The enveloping curve of this function is growing logarithmically with the block size, with an effective central charge in front of the logarithm which is characteristic for the underlying aperiodic sequence. The aperiodic sequence producing the largest effective central charge is identified, and the latter is found to exceed the central charge of the corresponding homogeneous model. For marginal aperiodic modulations, numerical investigations performed for the XX model show a logarithmic dependence, as well, with an effective central charge varying continuously with the coupling ratio.

Block entropy for Kitaev-type spin chains in a transverse field

V. Subrahmanyam

Block entanglement entropy in the ground state of a quantum spin chain is investigated. The spins have Kitaev-type nearest-neighbor interaction, of strength ${J}_{x}$ or ${J}_{y}$, through either $x$ or $y$ components of the spins on alternating bonds, along with a transverse magnetic field $h$. An exact solution is obtained through Jordan-Wigner fermionization, and it exhibits a macroscopically degenerate ground state for $h=0$ and a nondegenerate ground state for $h\ensuremath{\ne}0$ for all interaction strengths. For a chain of $N$ spins, we study the block entropy of a partition of $L$ contiguous spins. The block entanglement entropy needs the eigenvalues of the ${2}^{L}$-dimensional reduced density matrix. We employ an efficient method that reduces this problem to evaluating eigenvalues of an $L$-dimensional matrix, which enables us to calculate easily the block entanglement for large-$N$ chains numerically. The entanglement entropy grows as $\mathrm{log}L$ at the degeneracy point $h=0$ and only for ${J}_{x}={J}_{y}$. For $h\ensuremath{\ne}0$, the entropy becomes independent of the size, thus obeying the area law. For ${J}_{x}\ensuremath{\ne}{J}_{y}$, the block entropy shows a nonmonotonic behavior for $L<N/2$.

Entanglement entropy scaling of the XXZ chain

Pochung Chen, Zhi-Long Xue, Ian P. McCulloch +3 more

We study the entanglement entropy scaling of the XXZ chain. While in the critical XY phase of the XXZ chain the entanglement entropy scales logarithmically with a coefficient that is determined by the associated conformal field theory, at the ferromagnetic point, however, the system is not conformally invariant yet the entanglement entropy still scales logarithmically albeit with a different coefficient. We investigate how such an nontrivial scaling at the ferromagnetic point influences the estimation of the central charge $c$ in the critical XY phase. In particular we use the entanglement scaling of the finite or infinite system, as well as the finite-size scaling of the ground state energy to estimate the value of $c$. In addition, the spin-wave velocity and the scaling dimension are also estimated. We show that in all methods the evaluations are influenced by the nearby ferromagnetic point and result in crossover behavior. Finally we discuss how to determine whether the central charge estimation is strongly influenced by the crossover behavior and how to properly evaluate the central charge.

Entanglement Entropy for the Long-Range Ising Chain in a Transverse Field

Thomas Koffel, Maciej Lewenstein, Luca Tagliacozzo

We consider the Ising model in a transverse field with long-range antiferromagnetic interactions that decay as a power law with their distance. We study both the phase diagram and the entanglement properties as a function of the exponent of the interaction. The phase diagram can be used as a guide for future experiments with trapped ions. We find two gapped phases, one dominated by the transverse field, exhibiting quasi-long-range order, and one dominated by the long-range interaction, with long-range Néel ordered ground states. We determine the location of the quantum critical points separating those two phases. We determine their critical exponents and central charges. In the phase with quasi-long-range order the ground states exhibit exotic corrections to the area law for the entanglement entropy coexisting with gapped entanglement spectra.
