Thermodynamic analysis of a long-range interacting spin system

Abstract

A long-range interacting Fermi chain placed in the uniform and the staggered magnetic field is studied via the micro-canonical approach. The relation between the entropy and the energy of the system is obtained by counting the number of microscopic states. We find that this system is non-ergodic and can exhibit first-order phase transition, second-order phase transition, or both. The microcanonical ensemble predicts negative specific heat regions and temperature jumps. Moreover, the global phase diagram of the system is constructed.

Thermodynamic properties of a spin-1 model with long-range interactions

Ji-Xuan Hou, Xu-Chen Yu

The long-range interacting spin-1 chain placed in a staggered magnetic field is studied by means of microcanonical approach. Firstly, we study the microcanonical entropy of the system in the thermodynamic limit and find the system is non-ergodic and can exhibit either first-order phase transition or second-order phase transition by shifting the external magnetic field strength. Secondly, we construct the global phase diagram of the system and find a phase transition area in the phase diagram corresponding to the temperature jump of the first-order phase transition.

Statistical thermodynamics of long-range quantum spin systems

Gerrit Olivier

ENGLISH ABSTRACT:In this thesis we discuss some of the anomalies present in systems with long-range interactions, for instance negative specifc heat and negative magnetic susceptibility, and show how they can be related to the convexity properties of the thermodynamic potentials and nonequivalence of ensembles. We also discuss the possibility of engineering long-range quantum spin systems with cold atoms in optical lattices to experimentally verify the existence of nonequivalence of ensembles. We then formulate an expression for the density of states when the energy and magnetisation correspond to a pair of non-commuting operators. Finally we analytically compute the entropy s(;m) as a function of energy, and magnetisation, m, for the anisotropic Heisenberg model with Curie-Weiss type interactions. The results show that the entropy is non-concave in terms of magnetisation under certain circumstances which in turn indicates that the microcanonical and canonical ensembles are not equivalent and that the magnetic susceptibility is negative. After making an appropriate change of variables we show that a second-order phase transition can be present at negative temperatures in the microcanonical ensemble which cannot be represented in the canonical ensemble.

Phase space gaps and ergodicity breaking in systems with long-range interactions

Freddy Bouchet, Thierry Dauxois, David Mukamel +1 more

We study a generalized isotropic XY model which includes both two- and four-spin mean-field interactions. This model can be solved in the microcanonical ensemble. It is shown that in certain parameter regions the model exhibits gaps in the magnetization at fixed energy, resulting in ergodicity breaking. This phenomenon has previously been reported in anisotropic and discrete spin models. The entropy of the model is calculated and the microcanonical phase diagram is derived, showing the existence of first-order phase transitions from the ferromagnetic to a paramagnetic disordered phase. It is found that ergodicity breaking takes place in both the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. As a consequence, the system can exhibit a stable ferromagnetic phase within the paramagnetic region, and conversely a disordered phase within the magnetically ordered region.

Violation of the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics in a spin chain

Zhi-Xia Li, Yuchen Yao, Sheng Zhang +1 more

A long-range interacting spin chain can exhibit temperature jump at the transition energy under the microcanonical description. After two identical long-range interacting subsystems of the same size at the same temperatures are weakly coupled, they exchange energy and the total microcanonical entropy of the full system increases irreversibly, leading to a violation of the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics. In addition, microcanonical Monte Carlo simulations are performed to verify our conclusion.

Phase transitions in systems with non-additive long-range interactions

Takashi Mori

We consider spin systems with long-range interactions in a non-additive regime. When the non-additive scaling limit is employed, the energy and the entropy compete and the system exhibits some phase transitions. Such systems do not satisfy the additivity, which results in some unfamiliar properties related to phase transitions. In this paper, the concept of additivity and its consequences are explained, and recent progress on the statistical mechanics of long-range interacting systems is reviewed. It is shown that parameter space is clearly decomposed into three regions according to the stability of the uniform state predicted by the mean-field (MF) theory. Based on this parameter space decomposition, recent results on the exactness of the MF theory are explained. When the interaction is non-negative (ferromagnetic), the analysis of the MF theory is exact and a typical spin configuration is always uniform in the canonical ensemble. However, in the restricted canonical ensemble, i.e., the canonical ensemble with a restriction of the value of the magnetization, it is shown that the MF theory does not necessarily give the exact description of the system and phase transitions between the MF uniform states (MF phase) and the inhomogeneous states (non-MF phase) occur. A new finding is that when the interaction potential changes its sign depending on the distance, the non-MF phase appears even in the canonical ensemble.

Thermodynamic properties of the XXZ ferromagnetic chain with long-range interactions

Lei Shu-guo

The one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ ferromagnetic chain with uniform long-range interactions among the z components of the spins in the transverse field was studied by using the mean-field Jordan-Wigner transformation. The analytic expressions and the numerical results of the thermodynamic quantities, including the Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, specific heat, magnetization and isothermal susceptibility, were obtained. We also discussed the phase transitions of the system at a finite temperature. Our results agreed with that from other literatures in the degenerate condition.
