Generation of the broadband indistinguishable two-photon state in the telecom band

The indistinguishable photon-pair sources are valuable in many quantum information applications, such as quantum microscopy, quantum synchronization, and quantum metrology. Based on cascaded sum-frequency generation (SFG) and spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) processes, we propose and demonstrate a scheme for the generation of spatially separated broadband indistinguishable photon pairs in the telecom band by using only one piece of a fiber-pigtailed periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide in a modified Sagnac loop. The measured joint spectral intensity of the generated entangled photon pairs is 7.27 THz (57.6 nm) at the full width at half-maximum (FWHM). The Hong–Ou–Mandel (HOM) interference of the generated broadband photons is measured with bandwidths of 5.35 THz (∼42.8 nm) and 100 GHz (∼0.8 nm), respectively. Visibility of 94.0±1.4% is achieved with the bandwidth of 5.35 THz, demonstrating good indistinguishability of the generated two-photon states, which could benefit the development of quantum microscopy and quantum synchronization.

Characterization of coincident-frequency entangled source in quantum synchronization application

Dong Ruifang, Runai Quan, Hou Feiyan +4 more

The frequency entangled photon pairs generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion process (SPDC) have been found the main resources in quantum clock synchronization protocols. The spectral indistinguishibility of the photon pairs is a key factor for the achievement of quantum clock synchronization. In this paper, we characterize both theoretically and experimentally the factors degrading the spectral indistinguishibility of the generated coincident-frequency entangled photon pairs under extended phase matching conditions. The results show that due to the nonnegligible second-order dispersion contribution to the phase mismatching, the broadening of the pulse pump bandwidth and the lengthening of the nonlinear crystal all lead to the degradation.

Characterization of spectrally filtered heralded single photons

John F. Suárez-Pérez, Alejandra Valencia, Mayerlin Núñez Portela

One method to produce pure heralded single photons (HSP) when using the optical process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is by modifying the joint spectrum of the photon pairs by means of spectral filters. In this work, we characterize the dependence, with the bandwidth of such filters, of the spectral purity and heralding efficiency of the HSP generated in a bulk SPDC. The values we report for the purity and heralding efficiency are obtained from measurements of the joint spectrum. Our results are in agreement with the theoretical model that predicts a trade-off between the purity and heralding efficiency, and they complement similar measurements that have been done for HSP produced by other types of sources.
