Abstract

We propose methods for improving the relaxations obtained by the normalized multiparametric disaggregation technique (NMDT). These relaxations constitute a key component for some methods for solving nonconvex mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic programming (MIQCQP) problems. It is shown that these relaxations can be more efficiently formulated by significantly reducing the number of auxiliary variables (in particular, binary variables) and constraints. Moreover, a novel algorithm for solving MIQCQP problems is proposed. It can be applied using either its original NMDT or the proposed reformulation. Computational experiments are performed using both benchmark instances from the literature and randomly generated instances. The numerical results suggest that the proposed techniques can improve the quality of the relaxations.

Enhancements of discretization approaches for non-convex mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic programming: part II

Benjamin Beach, Robert Burlacu, Andreas Bärmann +2 more

Abstract This is Part II of a study on mixed-integer programming (MIP) relaxation techniques for the solution of non-convex mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic programs (MIQCQPs). We set the focus on MIP relaxation methods for non-convex continuous variable products where both variables are bounded and extend the well-known MIP relaxation normalized multiparametric disaggregation technique(NMDT), applying a sophisticated discretization to both variables. We refer to this approach as doubly discretized normalized multiparametric disaggregation technique (D-NMDT). In a comprehensive theoretical analysis, we underline the theoretical advantages of the enhanced method D-NMDT compared to NMDT. Furthermore, we perform a broad computational study to demonstrate its effectiveness in terms of producing tight dual bounds for MIQCQPs. Finally, we compare D-NMDT to the separable MIP relaxations from Part I and a state-of-the-art MIQCQP solver.

DECOMPOSITION AND RELAXATION ALGORITHMS FOR NONCONVEX MIXED INTEGER QUADRATICALLY CONSTRAINED QUADRATIC PROGRAMMING PROBLEMS

TIAGO COUTINHO CARNEIRO DE ANDRADE

This thesis investigates and develops algorithms based on Lagrangian relaxation and normalized multiparametric disaggregation technique to solve nonconvex mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic programming.First, relaxations for quadratic programming and related problem classes are reviewed. Then, the normalized multiparametric disaggregation technique is improved to a reformulated version, in which the size of the generated subproblems are reduced in the number of binary variables.Furthermore, issues related to the use of the Lagrangian relaxation to solve nonconvex problems are addressed by replacing the dual subproblems with convex relaxations. This method is compared to commercial and open source off-the-shelf global solvers using randomly generated instances. The proposed method converged in 35 of 36 instances, while Baron, the benchmark solver that obtained the best results only converged in 4 of 36.Additionally, even for the one instance the methods did not converge, it achieved relative gaps below 1% in all instances, while Baron achieved relative gaps between 10% and 30% in most of them.

Enhancements of Discretization Approaches for Non-Convex Mixed-Integer Quadratically Constraint Quadratic Programming: Part I

Benjamin Beach, Robert Burlacu, Andreas Bärmann +2 more

We study mixed-integer programming (MIP) relaxation techniques for the solution of non convex mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic programs (MIQCQPs). We present MIP relaxation methods for non convex continuous variable products. In Part I, we consider MIP relaxations based on separable reformulation. The main focus is the introduction of the enhanced separable MIP relaxation for nonconvex quadratic products of the form z=xy, called hybrid separable (HybS). Additionally, we introduce a logarithmic MIP relaxation for univariate quadratic terms, called sawtooth relaxation. We combine the latter with HybS and existing separable reformulations to derive MIP relaxations of MIQCQPs. We provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis of these techniques, underlining the theoretical advantages of HybS compared to its predecessors. We perform a broad computational study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the enhanced MIP relaxation in terms of producing tight dual bounds for MIQCQPs. In Part II, we study MIP relaxations that extend the well-known MIP relaxation normalized multiparametric disaggregation technique (NMDT) and present further theoretical and computational analyses.

The p-Lagrangian relaxation for separable nonconvex MIQCQP problems

Tiago Andrade, Nikita Belyak, Andrew C. Eberhard +2 more

Abstract This paper presents a novel technique to compute Lagrangian bounds for nonconvex mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic programming problems presenting a separable structure (i.e., a separable problems) such as those arising in deterministic equivalent representations of two-stage stochastic programming problems. In general, the nonconvex nature of these models still poses a challenge to the available solvers, which do not consistently perform well for larger-scale instances. Therefore, we propose an appealing alternative algorithm that allows for overcoming computational performance issues. Our novel technique, named the p-Lagrangian decomposition, is a decomposition method that combines Lagrangian decomposition with mixed-integer programming-based relaxations. These relaxations are obtained using the reformulated normalised multiparametric disaggregation technique and can be made arbitrarily precise by means of a precision parameter p. We provide a technical analysis showing the convergent behaviour of the approach as the approximation is made increasingly precise. We observe that the proposed method presents significant reductions in computational time when compared with a previously proposed techniques in the literature and the direct employment of a commercial solver. Moreover, our computational experiments show that the employment of a simple heuristic can recover solutions with small duality gaps.
