Abstract

Using four-wave mixing in a 1D medium, we present a scheme without using cavities for achieving a conditional π phase shift between two traveling single photons. Our proposal provides a way for cavity-free quantum information processing.

Cavity-Free Scheme for Nondestructive Detection of a Single Optical Photon

Keyu Xia, Mattias Johnsson, P. L. Knight +1 more

Detecting a single photon without absorbing it is a long-standing challenge in quantum optics. All experiments demonstrating the nondestructive detection of a photon make use of a high quality cavity. We present a cavity-free scheme for nondestructive single-photon detection. By pumping a nonlinear medium we implement an interfield Rabi oscillation which leads to a ∼π phase shift on a weak probe coherent laser field in the presence of a single signal photon without destroying the signal photon. Our cavity-free scheme operates with a fast intrinsic time scale in comparison with similar cavity-based schemes. We implement a full real-space multimode numerical analysis of the interacting photonic modes and confirm the validity of our nondestructive scheme in the multimode case.

On the Possibility of Quantum Computation Based on Photon Exchange Interactions

Tomáš Opatrný, Gershon Kurizki

We examine several proposed schemes by Franson et al. for quantum logic gates based on non-local exchange interactions between two photons in a medium. In these schemes the presence of a single photon in a given mode is supposed to induce a large phase shift on another photon propagating in the same medium. We conclude that the schemes proposed so far are not able to produce the required conditional phase shift, even though the proposals contain many stimulating and intriguing ideas.

To catch a photon nondestructively

I. S. Osborne

Quantum Optics With several techniques now available for generating single photons, coupled with their relative robustness and ability to be transmitted long distances, photons are ideal carriers of quantum information. However, determining the best methodol-ogy for detecting a single propagating photon without absorbing it (and destroying it) remains a work in progress. Xia et al. propose a cavity-free approach based on an induced nonlinear interaction. By co-propagating a weak probe beam with the signal beam containing the single photon in a nonlinear medium, they show theoretically that the phase of the probe beam should be shifted, conditional on the presence of the single photon. The proposed technique could offer a simpler route for implementing such quantum non-demolition detection strategies necessary for successful quantum information processing. Phys. Rev. Lett. 116 , 023601 (2016).

Quantum computing and communication with decoherence-free atomic states

Mang Feng

To resist decoherence from destroying the phase factor of qubit state, it is important to use decoherence-free states for processing, transmitting and storing quantum information in quantum computing and quantum communication. We propose a practical scheme using four atoms with decoherence-free states in a single-mode cavity to realize the entanglement and fundamental quantum logic gates. The transmission of quantum information can be made directly from one atom to another, in which the cavity is only virtually excited. The possible application and the experimental requirement of our proposal are discussed

A simple conditional single-atom based method for generating Bell-like states of two high-Q single mode cavity fields is presented. The practical feasibility of the scheme is briefly discussed.

A Study of Optical Nonlinearities at the Single-Photon Level for Quantum Logic

Balakrishnan Viswanathan

In this dissertation, we shall focus on theoretically studying quantum nonlinear optical schemes to construct a conditional phase gate at the single-photon level. With an aim to develop analytical models, we shall carry out a rigorous quantized multimode field analysis of some of these schemes involving only the interacting field operators. More specifically, we shall first study the three-wave mixing process involving two single-photons in a second-order nonlinear medium (x(2)) under two different cases viz. when the photons are traveling with equal velocities and when they are traveling with different velocities, and explore the possibility of using them for building a conditional phase phase gate. Finally, we shall study the interaction of single-photon wavepackets with a realistic atomic system viz. an ensemble of five-level atoms, to construct a phase gate. We will particularly look at the "giant Kerr" effect in electromagnetically induced transparency to explore the possibility of using this scheme for achieving a conditional phase shift and to understand how the bandwidth gets restricted naturally in such an atomic system.
