Study on QC-LDPC Codes Based on BIBD for Optical Communication Systems

Yong Wang

Based on the Balanced Incomplete Block Design(BIBD),a novel construction method of Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check(QC-LDPC) codes is further analyzed and researched. And the three QC-LDPC codes with the same code-rate and different code-length are constructed by applying the proposed method. The simulation analysis shows that under the condition of the same code-rate,the QC-LDPC code with the longer code-length has better error-correction performance.Simultaneously,at the condition of the bit error rate(BER) of 10-6 and the same code rate of 93.7%,the net coding gain(NCG) of the constructed BIBD-QC-LDPC(5392,5056) code is respectively 2.13 dB and 1.41 dB higher than that of the classic RS(255,239) code widely used in optical communication systems and that of the LDPC(32640,30592) code in ITU-T G.975.1.Therefore,the BIBD-QC-LDPC(5392,5056) code has much superior error-correction performance and is better suitable for high-speed long-haul optical communication systems.

CONSTRUCTION OF REGULAR LDPC LIKE CODES BASED ON FULL RANK CODES AND THEIR ITERATIVE DECODING USING A PARITY CHECK TREE

Prashantha Kumar H, Udupi Sripati, Rajesh Shetty K

Low density parity check (LDPC) codes are capacity-approaching codes, which means that practical constructions exist that allow the noise threshold to be set very close to the theoretical Shannon limit for a memory less channel. LDPC codes are finding increasing use in applications like LTE-Networks, digital television, high density data storage systems, deep space communication systems etc. Several algebraic and combinatorial methods are available for constructing LDPC codes. In this paper we discuss a novel low complexity algebraic method for constructing regular LDPC like codes derived from full rank codes. We demonstrate that by employing these codes over AWGN channels, coding gains in excess of 2dB over un-coded systems can be realized when soft iterative decoding using a parity check tree is employed.

Lifting method for quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check codes based on approximated cycle extrinsic message degree in optical communication systems

Xin Qin, Chuanchuan Yang, Jiazhe Hu +2 more

Quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes with low-complexity hardware implementation and excellent performance have become a hot research topic in many optical communication systems. To meet the different requirements of code lengths in optical communication systems, lifting methods which remove all the short cycles equally are usually used to construct long QC-LDPC codes of larger lengths by lifting short QC-LDPC codes. A lifting method is proposed, which considers both length and connectivity of short cycles. The proposed lifting method reduces the complexity of calculating the approximated cycle extrinsic message degree -related metrics and improves connectivity of the Tanner graph. The numerical results prove that, by employing our proposed lifting method, the lifted long QC-LDPC codes have better bit error rate performance compared with the lifted codes employing the traditional lifting method.
