Lossless Postselected Quantum Metrology with Quasi-pure Mixed States

Jing Yang

Postselection can compress the metrological information and improve sensitivity in the presence of certain types of technical noise. Postselected quantum metrology with pure states has been significantly advanced recently. However, extending this framework to mixed states leads to formidable challenges, such as the difficulty in searching for lossless postselection measurements or even the loss of metrological information. In this work, we leverage the intuition for the lossless postselection of pure states and generalize the theory to the lossless postselection of a class of mixed states, dubbed quasi-pure states. We illustrate our findings in postselected quantum imaging, unitary estimation problems, and show that the quasi-pure structure can be universally engineered through only classical correlation with an ancilla. Our findings extend the utility of postselection techniques to scenarios with decoherence and also offer new perspectives to foundational questions in quantum information geometry.

Scalable Heisenberg limited metrology using mixed states

Geng Chen, N. Aharon, Yong-Nan Sun +7 more

Improving the precision of measurements is a prime challenge to the scientific community. Quantum metrology provides methods to overcome the standard quantum limit (SQL) of 1/sqrt{N} and to reach the fundamental Heisenberg-limit (HL) of 1/N. While a lot of theoretical and experimenta works have been dedicated to this task, most of the attempts focused on utilizing NOON and squeezed states, which exhibit unique quantum correlations. Here we present, and experimentally implement, a new scheme for precision measurements that enables reaching the HL. Our scheme is based on a probe in a mixed state with a large uncertainty, combined with a post-selection, such that the Fisher information is maximized, and the Carmer-Rao bound is saturated. We performed a Heisenberg limited measurement of the Kerr non-linearity of a single photon, where an ultra-small Kerr phase of 6 *10^{-8}$ was observed with an unprecedented precision of 10^{-9}. Our method paves the way to Heisenberg-limited metrology with only mixed state.

Maximal Quantum Fisher Information for Mixed States

Lukas J. Fiderer, Julien Mathieu Elias Fraïsse, Daniel Braun

We study quantum metrology for unitary dynamics. Analytic solutions are given for both the optimal unitary state preparation starting from an arbitrary mixed state and the corresponding optimal measurement precision. This represents a rigorous generalization of known results for optimal initial states and upper bounds on measurement precision which can only be saturated if pure states are available. In particular, we provide a generalization to mixed states of an upper bound on measurement precision for time-dependent Hamiltonians that can be saturated with optimal Hamiltonian control. These results make precise and reveal the full potential of mixed states for quantum metrology.
