Abstract

We provide a measure to characterize the non-Gaussianity of phase-space function of bosonic quantum states based on the cumulant theory. We study the non-Gaussianity dynamics of two-mode squeezed number states by analyzing the phase-averaged kurtosis for two different models of decoherence: amplitude damping model and phase damping model. For the amplitude damping model, the non-Gaussianity is very fragile and completely vanishes at a finite time. For the phase damping model, such states exhibit rich non-Gaussian characters. In particular, we obtain a transition time that such states can transform from sub-Gaussianity into super-Gaussianity during the evolution. Finally, we compare our measure with the existing measures of non-Gaussianity under the independent dephasing environment.

Quantum non-Gaussianity dynamics of two-mode single-photon squeezed Bell states based on cumulant theory

Shao-Hua Xiang, Wei Wen, Yu-Jing Zhao +1 more

We characterize the non-Gaussianity of continuous-variable quantum states in terms of the cumulant theory and derive the exact formula of the cumulant of any order for such states. Exploiting the fourth-order cumulant method, we evaluate the quantum non-Gaussianity of two-mode single-photon squeezed Bell states and investigate their dynamics under the influence of two different types of decoherence models. It is shown that in a two-reservoir model, all the fourth-order cumulants of these states are very fragile, while in single-reservoir model, the fourth-order cumulants of one such state are insensitive to thermal noise, showing the time-invariant non-Gaussianity.

The cumulants of bosonic quantum states

Li-zhen Jiang

We address the issue of quantifying the non-Gaussian character of a bosonic quantum state and introduce cumulants of quantum states as the measure of non-Gaussianity. The cumulants are calculated for Fock state, cat state, non-Gaussian state prepared by photon subtraction and phase damped state. The time evolution of non-Gaussianity is also studied. The third-order cumulant is a vector of length 4 and the fourth-order cumulant is a vector of length 5 for single mode quantum state.

Evaluation of the non-Gaussianity of two-mode entangled states over a bosonic memory channel via cumulant theory and quadrature detection

Shao-Hua Xiang, Wei Wen, Yu-Jing Zhao +1 more

We study the properties of the cumulants of multimode boson operators and introduce the phase-averaged quadrature cumulants as the measure of the non-Gaussianity of multimode quantum states. Using this measure, we investigate the non-Gaussianity of two classes of two-mode non-Gaussian states: photon-number entangled states and entangled coherent states traveling in a bosonic memory quantum channel. We show that such a channel can skew the distribution of two-mode quadrature variables, giving rise to a strongly non-Gaussian correlation. In addition, we provide a criterion to determine whether the distributions of these states are super- or sub-Gaussian.

Efficient non-Gaussianity measure for single-mode fields by kurtosis of a Gaussian operator

Xiang Cheng, Yu-Jing Zhao, Shao-Hua Xiang

Abstract We propose a method to faithfully probe and quantify the non-Gaussianity of single-mode fields in the coherent-state representations based on the averaged-cumulant technique. In comparison with the previous measure, S H Xiang et al (2018 Phys. Rev. A 97 042303), we characterize the non-Gaussianity of quantum states using the kurtosis of a Gaussian operator, rather than that of a quadrature operator. As applications, we investigate the non-Gaussianities of three different non-Gaussian states: a mixture of vacuum and Fock states, Schrödinger cat states, and photon-added coherent states. It is proven that such a kurtosis is a powerful and effective measure in appraising non-Gaussianity.

Nonclassicality and decoherence of photon-subtracted squeezed states

Asoka Biswas, G. S. Agarwal

We discuss nonclassical properties of single-photon subtracted squeezed vacuum states in terms of the sub-Poissonian statistics and the negativity of the Wigner function. We derive a compact expression for the Wigner function from which we find the region of phase space where Wigner function is negative. We find an upper bound on the squeezing parameter for the state to exhibit sub-Poissonian statistics. We then study the effect of decoherence on the single-photon subtracted squeezed states. We present results for two different models of decoherence, viz. amplitude decay model and the phase diffusion model. In each case we give analytical results for the time evolution of the state. We discuss the loss of nonclassicality as a result of decoherence. We show through the study of their phase-space properties how these states decay to vacuum due to the decay of photons. We show that phase damping leads to very slow decoherence, slower than the photon-number decay.

Decoherence and entanglement in two-mode squeezed vacuum states

Tohya Hiroshima

I investigate the decoherence of two-mode squeezed vacuum states by analyzing the relative entropy of entanglement. I consider two sources of decoherence: (i) the phase damping and (ii) the amplitude damping due to the coupling to the thermal environment. In particular, I give the exact value of the relative entropy of entanglement for the phase damping model. For the amplitude damping model, I give an upper bound for the relative entropy of entanglement, which turns out to be a good approximation for the entanglement measure in the usual experimental situations.
