Abstract

We survey recent developments in quantum algorithms, focusing on resource estimates for breaking cryptographic protocols on a quantum computer, which in turn can be used to derive quantum security parameters for various schemes. We contrast these cryptographic applications with applications based on a quantum computer’s supreme ability to efficiently simulate other quantum mechanical systems.

Quantum Computing for Cryptanalysis: Breaking Modern Cryptographic Protocols

Jessica Roberts, Jennifer Leigh Clarke

Quantum computing poses a fundamental threat to modern cryptographic protocols by exploiting quantum algorithms that surpass classical computational limits. Shor’s algorithm can efficiently factor large integers, breaking RSA and other public-key cryptosystems, while Grover’s algorithm accelerates brute-force attacks against symmetric encryption. As quantum hardware advances, traditional cryptographic schemes risk obsolescence, necessitating the development of quantum-resistant cryptographic techniques. This paper explores the theoretical foundations of quantum cryptanalysis, examining key algorithms, their implications for cybersecurity, and the current state of post-quantum cryptographic solutions. By analyzing resource estimates for quantum attacks and potential mitigation strategies, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the evolving cryptographic landscape in the quantum era.

Introduction to Quantum Information, Quantum Computation, and Its Application to Cryptography

D.J. Guan

The development of quantum algorithms and quantum information theory, as well as the design and construction of experimental quantum computers, are the most exciting events in the scientific community in the last two decades. In this talk, I will briefly introduce quantum computation and quantum information. I will also discuss the influences of these developments on information security and our recent research results on the design of cryptographic protocol by using quantum information. Quantum Computers In 1982 Richard Feynman observed that certain quantum mechanical effects cannot be simulated efficiently on a traditional computer. It is speculated that computations may be done more efficiently by using these quantum effects.

An Overview of Quantum-Safe Approaches: Quantum Key Distribution and Post-Quantum Cryptography

Guobin Xu, Jianzhou Mao, Eric Sakk +1 more

Common cryptographic algorithms may no longer be considered secure under future quantum computers, which will cause a serious threat to network security. Hence, investigating quantum-safe cryptography and evaluating the safety of traditional cryptographic algorithms are essential and have become urgent demands. In this paper, we study the quantum-safe cryptography approaches and conduct a survey of the various quantum key distribution protocols, simulation tools, and commercial applications. In addition, we provide a comparison of the first four post-quantum cryptographic algorithms recently announced by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The challenges of quantum-safe approaches will be discussed, which aim to find future research directions in quantum cryptography.
