Abstract

We study the optical response of a coupled asymmetric semiconductor quantum dot-spherical metal nanoparticle structure. The asymmetric quantum dot has permanent electric dipole moments that also interact with light. We derive the density matrix equations for the system including the modification of the electric field and the exciton-plasmon coupling. We emphasize on the effects of the nonlinear optical rectification and controlled optical bistability and analyze these phenomena for different values of the light intensity and different distances between the quantum dot and the metal nanoparticle. We show that when the system is set in a situation where optical bistability can be produced, the optical rectification of the hybrid system is bivalued. We also analyze the slow-down to reach the steady state when the system is driven close and far from the turning points.

Optical bistability and nonlinearity of coherently coupled exciton-plasmon systems

Jian-Bo Li, Nam-Chol Kim, Mu-Tian Cheng +3 more

We theoretically investigated optical third-order nonlinearity of a coherently coupled exciton-plasmon hybrid system under a strong control field with a weak probe field. The analytic formulas of exciton population and effective third-order optical susceptibility of the hybrid of a metal nanoparticle (MNP) and a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) were deduced. The bistable exciton population and the induced bistable nonlinear absorption and refraction response were revealed. The bistability region can be tuned by adjusting the size of metal nanoparticle, interparticle distance and intensity of control field. Our results have perspective applications in optical information processing based on resonant coupling of exciton-plasmon.

Controlling the Pump-Probe Optical Response in Asymmetric Tunneling-Controlled Double Quantum Dot Molecule—Metal Nanoparticle Hybrids

Spyridon G. Kosionis, Emmanuel Paspalakis

In the present work, we investigate the modified nonlinear pump-probe optical properties due to the excitonic–plasmonic interaction of a double semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) molecule coupled to a metal nanoparticle (MNP). More specifically, we study the absorption and the dispersion spectra of a weak electromagnetic field in a hybrid structure with two counterparts, a molecule of two coupled SQDs, and a spherical MNP driven by a field of high intensity. We solve the relevant density matrix equations, calculate the first-order optical susceptibility of the probe field in the strong pumping regime, and investigate the way in which the distance between the two counterparts modifies the optical response, for a variety of values of the physical constants of the system, including the pump-field detuning, the tunnelling rate, and the energy separation gap associated with the excited states of the coupled SQDs.

Optical bistability of a plexcitonic system consisting of a quantum dot near a metallic nanorod

Tayebeh Naseri, Nader Daneshfar

Optical response of a complex nanodimer comprising a semiconductor quantum dot via Coulomb interaction to a metal nanorod is analyzed theoretically. Optical bistability (OB) behavior of a coherently coupled exciton-plasmon (plexcitonic) hybrid system under a laser field is investigated. The bistable exciton population in a hybrid metal–semiconductor nanodimer response is shown, and it could be pointed out that OB behavior is strongly influenced by various parameters such as size of metal nanoparticle, interparticle distance as well as intensity of probe laser field. We show that OB can be observed for a plexcitonic system and depends strongly on the type of the metals which are good candidates for plasmonic applications. The numerical calculations show the gold nanorod exhibits significant optical bistability. The result promises various applications in the field of all-optical information processing at the nanoscale, the most basic of them being the optical switching, optical memory, optical transistor and optical logic.

Incoherent control of optical bistability and multistability in a hybrid system: Metallic nanoparticle-quantum dot nanostructure

We discuss the optical bistability and multistability properties of incident light on a unidirectional ring cavity consisting of a hybrid semiconductor quantum dot-metal nanoparticle system driven by coupling and incoherent pumping fields. We consider the quantum dot system as a three-level V-type configuration which is placed near the metallic nanoparticle. We realize that the threshold of optical bistability and optical multistability can be controlled by tuning the center-to-center distance between quantum dots and metallic nanoparticles. Moreover, the effect of incoherent pumping field on optical bistability and optical multistability has been discussed for different distances between quantum dots and metallic nanoparticles.

Multipole polarization assisted optical bistability in a semiconductor quantum dot/metal nanoparticle hybrid molecule

Wenhao Zhao, Lin-Wen Long, Qing-Qing Guo +6 more

We theoretically study the optical bistability assisted by multipole polarizations in a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD)/metal nanoparticle (MNP) hybrid molecule. We map out bistability phase diagrams within the parameter subspace spanned by (the pumping intensity Ipu, interparticle distance, d) under dipole and multipole approximations. It is shown that the Ipu-correlated bistable region will be broadened greatly in the strong exciton–plasmon coupling regime, and the corresponding lower (upper) bistable threshold is enlarged significantly due to multipole polarization (N = 10) in comparison to that in the dipole approximation (N = 1). However, under the same conditions, the d-correlated bistable region is shrunk at high pump intensities. Our contribution not only offers a better understanding of exciton–plasmon coupling systems but also expands the application of SQD/MNP hybrid molecules in the field of optical bistable nanodevices.

Optical Dynamics of a Bistable Semiconductor Quantum Dot - Metal Nanoparticle Heterodymer

Bintoro Siswo Nugroho, Alexander Agustinus Iskandar, Victor A Malyshev +1 more

We perform a theoretical study of the optical dynamics of a hybrid system comprised of a closely spaced semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metal nanoparticle (MNP). We show that, depending on the strength of the SQD-MNP coupling, the system can manifest bistability in the optical response. The SQD population demonstrate a hysteresis behavior upon sweeping adiabatically up and down the input intensity. We calculate the relaxation time required for the SQD population to reach its steadystate value and show that close to a critical intensity of the input, at which the SQD population switches from a lower to a higher value, the relaxation time is slowing down dramatically.
