Abstract

One can entangle distinct field modes by the delocalized addition of a single photon. We present recent experiments on the characterization of entanglement created by adding single photons between modes initially containing light states of different sorts and sizes.

Entangling Macroscopic Light States by Delocalized Photon Addition

Nicola Biagi, Luca S. Costanzo, Marco Bellini +1 more

We present a scheme, based on the delocalized heralded addition of a single photon, to entangle two or more distinct field modes, each containing arbitrary light states. A high degree of entanglement can in principle endure light states of macroscopic intensities and is expected to be particularly robust against losses. We experimentally establish and measure significant entanglement between two identical weak laser pulses containing up to 60 photons each.

Multiphoton Entanglement by Delocalized Single Photon Addition

Nicola Biagi, Luca S. Costanzo, Marco Bellini +1 more

We report about the generation of entangled states obtained by applying delocalized single-photon addition between two uncorrelated light modes populated by coherent states. Such entangled states can contain an arbitrary large number of photons while preserving their non-classical correlations. Besides their importance to study quantum effects in large-scale systems, these states are found to be surprisingly robust against losses and thus well suited to travel over long distances and to be stored in atomic ensembles.

Coherent Superpositions of Photon Creation Operations and Their Application to Multimode States of Light

Nicola Biagi, Saverio Francesconi, Alessandro Zavatta +1 more

We present a concise review of recent experimental results concerning the conditional implementation of coherent superpositions of single-photon additions onto distinct field modes. Such a basic operation is seen to give rise to a wealth of interesting and useful effects, from the generation of a tunable degree of entanglement to the birth of peculiar correlations in the photon numbers and the quadratures of multimode, multiphoton, states of light. The experimental investigation of these properties will have an impact both on fundamental studies concerning, for example, the quantumness and entanglement of macroscopic states, and for possible applications in the realm of quantum-enhanced technologies.

Entanglement Generation by Delocalized Single-Photon Addition

Nicola Biagi, Luca S. Costanzo, Marco Bellini +1 more

We report an experimental realization of entangled states obtained by applying a superposition of single-photon creation operations between two uncorrelated temporal modes populated by coherent states of the same amplitude. Such entangled states of light can be populated with a large number of photons while preserving their non classical correlations. Besides their importance from the fundamental point of view to study quantum effects in large-scale systems, these states are found to be surprisingly robust against losses [1] and thus well suited to travel over long distances and to be stored in atomic ensembles.

Generating Discorrelated States for Quantum Information Protocols by Coherent Multimode Photon Addition

Nicola Biagi, Luca S. Costanzo, Marco Bellini +1 more

Abstract It is demonstrated that the recently developed technique of delocalized single photon addition may generate discorrelation, a new joint statistical property of multimode quantum light states, whereby the number of photons in each mode can take any value individually, but two modes together never exhibit the same. By coherently adding a single photon to two identical coherent states of light in different temporal modes, the first experimental observation of discorrelation is provided. The capability of manipulating this statistical property has applications in scenarios involving the secure distribution of information among untrusted parties, like in the so‐called “mental poker” games.
