Abstract

Abstract We develop a master equation approach to describe the dynamics of distant resonators coupled through a one-dimensional waveguide. Our method takes into account the back-actions of the reservoirs, and enables us to calculate the exact dynamics of the complete system at all times. We show that such system can cause nonexponential and long-lived photon decay due to the existence of a relaxation effect. The physical origin of non-Markovianity in our model system is the finite propagation speed resulting in time delays in communication between the nodes, and strong decay rate of the emitters into the waveguide. When the distance satisfies the standing wave condition, we find that when the time delay is increased, the dark modes formation is no longer perfect, and the average photon number of dark mode decreases in steady time limit .

Exact non-Markovian cavity dynamics strongly coupled to a reservoir

Heng-Na Xiong, Wei-Min Zhang, Xiaoguang Wang +1 more

The exact non-Markovian dynamics of a microcavity strongly coupled to a general reservoir at arbitrary temperature are studied. With the exact master equation for the reduced density operator of the cavity system, we analytically solve the time evolution of the cavity state and the associated physical observables. We show that the non-Markovian dynamics are completely determined by the propagating (retarded) and correlation Green functions. Comparing the non-Markovian behavior at finite temperature with those at the zero-temperature limit or Born-Markov limit, we find that the non-Markovian memory effect can dramatically change the coherent and thermal dynamics of the cavity. We also numerically study the dissipation dynamics of the cavity through the mean mode amplitude decay and the average photon number decay in the microwave regime. It is shown that the strong coupling between the cavity and the reservoir results in a long-time dissipationless evolution to the cavity field amplitude, and its noise dynamics undergo a critical transition from the weak to the strong coupling due to the non-Markovian memory effect.

Superradiant decay in non-Markovian Waveguide Quantum Electrodynamics

Rosa Lucia Capurso, Giuseppe Calajó, Simone Montangero +5 more

An array of initially excited emitters coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide exhibits superradiant decay under the Born-Markov approximation, manifested as a coherent burst of photons in the output field. In this work, we employ tensor-network methods to investigate its non-Markovian dynamics induced by finite time delays in photon exchange among the emitters. We find that the superradiant burst breaks into a structured train of correlated photons, each intensity peak corresponding to a specific photon number. We quantify the emitter-photon and emitter-emitter entanglement generated during this process and show that the latter emerges in the long-time limit, as part of the excitation becomes trapped within the emitters' singlet subspace. We finally consider the decay of the system's most radiant state, the symmetric Dicke state, and show that time delay can lead to decay rates exceeding those predicted by the Markovian approximation.

Non-Markovian dynamics of an open quantum system with initial system-reservoir correlations: A nanocavity coupled to a coupled-resonator optical waveguide

Hua-tang Tan, Wei-Min Zhang

In this paper, the exact non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems in the presence of initial system-reservoir correlations is investigated for a photonic cavity system coupled to a general non-Markovian reservoir. The exact time-convolutionless master equation incorporating with initial system-reservoir correlations is obtained. The non-Markovian dynamics of the reservoir and the effects of the initial correlations are embedded into the time-dependent coefficients in the master equation. We show that the effects induced by the initial correlations play an important role in the non-Markovian dynamics of the cavity but they are washed out in the steady-state limit in the Markovian regime. Moreover, the initial two-photon correlation between the cavity and the reservoir can induce nontrivial squeezing dynamics to the cavity field.

Tunable non-Markovian dynamics with a three-level atom mediated by the classical laser in a semi-infinite photonic waveguide

Xin Li, Shuang Xu, X. X. Yi +1 more

In this work, we investigate the non-Markovian (NM) dynamical evolution of a three-level atom coupled to a semi-infinite one-dimensional photonic waveguide and driven by a classical driving field. The single-end of waveguide behaves as a perfect mirror while light can pass through the opposite end with no backreflection. We derive the exact analytical expressions for the wave function of the driven three-level atom by solving a set of delay differential equations and give the conditions of atom-photon bound state formation that can inhibit the dissipation, which appears in the atom-mirror interspace in order to trap a considerable amount of initial atomic excitation. We show that when the evolution time of the system is shorter than the time delay taken by a photon to perform a round trip between the atom and mirror, the atomic dynamics exhibits Markovian properties, which depend on the driving strength and rescaled parameters. If the evolution time of the system exceeds the time delay, the photon can be reabsorbed by the atom with the photon emitted by the atom having completed the round trip, which exhibits NM memory effects, where the population eventually convergences to the finite-steady values. We also study the influence of the loss and dephasing on the formation of a bound state. Finally, the above results are extended to a more general quantum system involving single-end photonic waveguide coupled to an arbitrary number of noninteracting three-level atoms driven by the driving fields. The presented formalism might open a way to better understand exactly the NM dynamics of driven multilevel atoms coupled to a semi-infinite waveguide.

Non-Markovian dynamics with $Λ$-type atomic systems in a single end photonic waveguide

Jun-Cong Zheng, Xiao-Wei Zheng, Xin‐Lei Hei +6 more

In this work, we investigate the non-Markovian dynamical evolution of a $Λ$-type atom interacting with a semi-infinite one-dimensional photonic waveguide via two atomic transitions. The waveguide terminates at a perfect mirror, which reflects the light and introduces boundary effects. We derive exact analytical expressions and show that, under suitable conditions, the instantaneous and retarded decay rates reach equilibrium, leading to the formation of an atom-photon bound state that suppresses dissipation. Consequently, the atom retains a long-lived population in the asymptotic time limit. Furthermore, we analyze the output field intensity and demonstrate that blocking one of the coupling channels forces the atomic system to emit photons of a single frequency. Finally, we extend the model to a two-atom system and examine the disentanglement dynamics of the two spatially separated atoms. These findings elucidate the dynamic process of spontaneous emission involving multi-frequency photons from multi-level atoms and provide insights into the complex interference between different decay pathways.

Exact solution for the collective non-Markovian decay of two fully excited quantum emitters

Alfonso Lanuza, Dominik Schneble

Waveguide quantum electrodynamics constitutes a modern paradigm for the interaction of light and matter, in which strong coupling, bath structure, and propagation delays can break the radiative conditions that quantum emitters typically encounter in free space. These characteristics intertwine the excitations of quantum emitters and guided radiation modes to form complex multiphoton dynamics. So far, combining the collective decay of the emitters with the non-Markovian effects induced by the modes has escaped a full solution and the detailed physics behind these systems remains unknown. Here we analyze such a collective non-Markovian decay in a minimal system of two excited emitters coupled to a one-dimensional single-band waveguide. We develop an exact solution for this system in terms of elementary functions that unveils hidden symmetries and predicts new forms of spontaneous decay. The collective non-Markovian dynamics, which are strongly dependent on the vacuum coupling and the detuning from the center of the band, show exotic features that can be characterized with a simple and readily available criterion. Our analytic methods shed light on the complexity of collective light-matter interactions and open up a pathway for understanding multiparticle open quantum systems.
