Entanglement entropy, holography and gravity

Abstract

In this thesis we review how entanglement entropy is related to the gravitational equations of motion by means of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider the entanglement entropy of a ball-shaped spatial region in the CFT vacuum and derive a holographic relation between the relative entropy and the equations of motion in the dual bulk spacetime. For small perturbations around the CFT vacuum, we show that the first law of entanglement entropy requires the dual metric to satisfy the linearized Einstein equation when the entanglement entropy is given by the area of an extremal surface in the bulk. We discuss a recent paper in which the complete Einstein equation is derived and explain why we believe this result is incomplete. This thesis serves both as a commentary on this paper, as well as a detailed review of the relationship between entanglement and gravity.

Emergence of Bulk Geometries from Conformal Field Theory

This thesis is devoted to a possible generalization of the entanglement entropy and its implication to the holography, especially AdS/CFT correspondence. The AdS/CFT correspondence is a way to define the quantum gravity in d + 1-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime by using the conformal field theory (CFT) in d-dimension.In this context, it is still unclear how we can realize the d + 1-dimensional full bulk geometries from the d-dimensional quantum field theories. The main object of this thesis is the minimal surface not necessarily anchored on the boundary, which has not been derived from the field theory analysis.First, we review how we can obtain minimal surfaces anchored on the boundary from the entanglement entropy. Then, we introduce a generalization of the entanglement entropy for mixed states and discuss its basic properties. Finally, we argue that we can extract the aforementioned minimal surfaces ending on the bulk from the generalized version of the entanglement entropy. Our explicit derivations include the geometries in three-dimensional AdS and BTZ black holes.First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Norihiro Iizuka, my supervisor.I could not reach here without his patient guidance and encouragement.

Comments on universal properties of entanglement entropy and bulk reconstruction

Felix M. Haehl

Entanglement entropy of holographic CFTs is expected to play a crucial role in the reconstruction of semiclassical bulk gravity. We consider the entanglement entropy of spherical regions of vacuum, which is known to contain universal contributions. After perturbing the CFT with a relevant scalar operator, also the first order change of this quantity gives a universal term which only depends on a discrete set of basic CFT parameters. We show that in gravity this statement corresponds to the uniqueness of the ghost-free graviton propagator on an AdS background geometry. While the gravitational dynamics in this context contains little information about the structure of the bulk theory, there is a discrete set of dimensionless parameters of the theory which determines the entanglement entropy. We argue that for every (not necessarily holographic) CFT, any reasonable gravity model can be used to compute this particular entanglement entropy. We elucidate how this statement is consistent with AdS/CFT and also give various generalizations. On the one hand this illustrates the remarkable usefulness of geometric concepts for understanding entanglement in general CFTs. On the other hand, it provides hints as to what entanglement data can be expected to provide enough information to distinguish, e.g., bulk theories with different higher curvature couplings.

Momentum-space entanglement and the gravity of entanglement in AdS/CFT

McDermott, Michael

In the first part of this thesis we explore the entanglement structure of relativistic field theories in momentum space. We discuss a Wilsonian path integral formulation and a perturbative approach. Using perturbation theory we obtain results for specific quantum field theories. These are understood through scaling and decoupling properties of field theories. Convergence of the perturbation theory taking loop diagrams into account is also discussed. We then discuss the entanglement structure in systems where Lorentz invariance is broken by a Fermi surface. The Fermi surface helps the convergence of perturbation theory and entanglement of modes near the Fermi surface is shown to be amplified, even in the presence of a large momentum cutoff. In the second part of this thesis we explore the connection between entanglement and gravity in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that there are certain thermodynamic-like relations common to all conformal field theories, which when mapped via the AdS/CFT correspondence to the bulk are tantamount to Einstein's equations, to lowest order in the metric.

Entanglement entropy from one-point functions in holographic states

Matthew J. S. Beach, Jae‐Hoon Lee, Charles Rabideau +1 more

For holographic CFT states near the vacuum, entanglement entropies for spatial subsystems can be expressed perturbatively as an expansion in the one-point functions of local operators dual to light bulk fields. Using the connection between quantum Fisher information for CFT states and canonical energy for the dual spacetimes, we describe a general formula for this expansion up to second-order in the one-point functions, for an arbitrary ball-shaped region, extending the first-order result given by the entanglement first law. For two-dimensional CFTs, we use this to derive a completely explicit formula for the second-order contribution to the entanglement entropy from the stress tensor. We show that this stress tensor formula can be reproduced by a direct CFT calculation for states related to the vacuum by a local conformal transformation. This result can also be reproduced via the perturbative solution to a non-linear scalar wave equation on an auxiliary de Sitter spacetime, extending the first-order result in arXiv:1509.00113 .

Entanglement entropy and algebraic holography

Bernard S. Kay

In 2006, Ryu and Takayanagi (RT) pointed out that (with a suitable cutoff) the entanglement entropy between two complementary regions of an equal-time surface of a d+1-dimensional conformal field theory on the conformal boundary of AdS_{d+2} is, when the AdS radius is appropriately related to the parameters of the CFT, equal to 1/4G times the area of the d-dimensional minimal surface in the AdS bulk which has the junction of those complementary regions as its boundary, where G is the bulk Newton constant. We point out here that the RT-equality implies that, in the quantum theory on the bulk AdS background which is related to the boundary CFT according to Rehren's 1999 algebraic holography theorem, the entanglement entropy between two complementary bulk Rehren wedges is equal to 1/4G times the (suitably cut off) area of their shared ridge. (This follows because of the geometrical fact that, for complementary ball-shaped regions, the RT minimal surface is precisely the shared ridge of the complementary bulk Rehren wedges which correspond, under Rehren's bulk-wedge to boundary double-cone bijection, to the complementary boundary double-cones whose bases are the RT complementary balls.) This is consistent with the Bianchi-Meyers conjecture -- that, in a theory of quantum gravity, the entanglement entropy, S, between the degrees of freedom of a given region with those of its complement is S = A/4G (+ lower order terms) -- but only if the phrase 'degrees of freedom' is replaced by 'matter degrees of freedom'. It also supports related previous arguments of the author -- consistent with the author's 'matter-gravity entanglement hypothesis' -- that the AdS/CFT correspondence is actually only a bijection between just the matter (i.e. non-gravity) sector operators of the bulk and the boundary CFT operators.

Aspects of Holographic Entanglement Entropy

Shinsei Ryu, Tadashi Takayanagi

This is an extended version of our short report hep-th/0603001, where a holographic interpretation of entanglement entropy in conformal field theories is proposed from AdS/CFT correspondence. In addition to a concise review of relevant recent progresses of entanglement entropy and details omitted in the earlier letter, this paper includes the following several new results: We give a more direct derivation of our claim which relates the entanglement entropy with the minimal area surfaces in the AdS3/CFT2 case as well as some further discussions on higher dimensional cases. Also the relation between the entanglement entropy and central charges in 4D conformal field theories is examined. We check that the logarithmic part of the 4D entanglement entropy computed in the CFT side agrees with the AdS5 result at least under a specific condition. Finally we estimate the entanglement entropy of massive theories in generic dimensions by making use of our proposal.
