ENERGY-POOLING COLLISIONS FOR Na(3P) +Cs(6P) HETERONUCLEAR SYSTEM

Abstract

Two different atomic species-sodium and cesium-have been resonantly excited in a cell by a cw dye laser and a cesium lamp, respectively. The density of the excited Na(3P) atoms in the cell is measured directly using the absorption-equivalent-width technique on the lines of the diffuse series. To isolate the heteronuclear contribution in the fluorescence spectrum, a modulation detection technique has been adopted. The energy-pooling collisions between Na(3P) and Cs(6P) have been observed and cross sections have been measured.

Energy-pooling collisions for K(4P)+Rb(5P) and Na(3P)+Rb(5P) heteronuclear systems

C. Gabbanini, Silvia Gozzini, G. Squadrito +2 more

The rate constants of the energy-pooling collisions in the Na-Rb and K-Rb vapor mixtures, resonantly excited by two cw dye lasers, have been measured relative to a known energy-pooling rate constant of a homonuclear reaction. To isolate the heteronuclear contribution in the fluorescence spectrum, a double-modulation technique has been adopted. The effective lifetimes of the excited levels that explicitly appear in the solution equation have been directly measured by using pulsed lasers. A discussion about the collision cross-section dependence on the energy defect involved in the energy-pooling collisions is reported.

Reverse Energy-Pooling Collisions: Cs(9 D )+Na(3 S ) Cs(6 P )+Na(3 P )

Shen Yi-Fan, A Pulati, Kang Dai

We report the observation of a heteronuclear reverse energy pooling process Cs(9 D )+Na(3 S )→Cs(6 P )+Na(3 P ). The state is populated in a stepwise excitation process by a dye-laser beam. A double-modulation technique is used to select the fluorescence contribution at the Na(3 P J ) exit channels only due to the above reaction. The ground-state sodium atom density was obtained by measuring the wing absorption coefficient. The measured density and fluorescence intensities are used to obtain the reverse energy-pooling rate coefficient. The cross section related to the rate coefficient is (4.3±1.4) × 10 −14 cm 2 .

Rd(7D)+Na(3S)碰撞激發轉移過程

沈異凡, 沈曉燕

The observation of a heteronuclear reverse energy pooling process is reported. The cross sections for the collision processes Rb(7D)+Na(3S)→Rb(5P)+Na(3P) have been measured. In the experiment the rubidium atoms were excited in two steps to the 7D(subscript 3/2) state. A double-modulation technique has been used to select the fluorescence contributions at the Na(3P(subscript j)) exit channels due only to the above reactions. The ground state sodium atom density was measured by the absorption of line from a Na hollow-cathode lamp. The measured density and fluorescence intensities have been used to obtain reverse energy pooling rate coefficients. The contribution to the rate coefficients from other processes is discussed.

Energy-pooling collisions in Rb-Cs vapor mixture Rb(5P_(J))+Cs(6P_(3/2))-->Rb(5S_(1/2))+Cs(nl_(J'))

Yifan Shen, Kang Dai, Baoxia Mu +2 more

Rate coefficients for energy-pooling (EP) collisions Rb(5P_(J))+Cs(6P_(3/2))-->Rb(5S_(1/2))+Cs(nl_(J')) have been measured. Atoms were excited to Rb(5P_(J)) and Cs(6P_(3/2)) states using two single-mode diode lasers. To isolate the heteronuclear contribution in the fluorescence spectrum, a double-modulation technique has been adopted. The excited-atom density and spatial distribution are mapped by monitoring the absorption of a counterpropagating single-mode diode laser beam, tuned to Rb(5P_(J)-->7S_(1/2)) and Cs(6P_(3/2)-->8S_(1/2)) transitions respectively, which could be translated parallelly to the pump beams. The excited atom densities are combined with the measured fluorescence ratios to determine cross sections for the EP processes. It was found that Rb(5P_(J))+Cs(6P_(3/2)) collisions are more efficient than Rb(5P_(3/2))+Cs(6P_(3/2)) collisions for populating Cs(4F_(5/2)), while the opposite is true for populating Cs(4F_(7/2)).

We experimentally study energy-pooling collision in the Rb–Cs vapour mixture at low densities in a cell. Atoms are excited to Rb(5 P 1/2 ) and Cs(6 P 3/2 ) states using two single-mode diode lasers. To isolate the heteronuclear contribution in the fluorescence spectrum, a double-modulation technique is adopted. The excited-atom density and spatial distribution are mapped by monitoring the absorption of a counterpropagating single-mode diode laser beam, tuned to Rb(5 P 1/2 →7 S 1/2 ) and Cs(6 P 3/2 →8 S 1/2 ) transitions, respectively, which could be translated parallel to the pump beams. The excited atom densities are combined with the measured fluorescence ratios to determine cross section for the energy-pooling process [i.e. Rb(5 P 1/2 ) + Cs (6 P 3/2 ) → Cs(8 S 1/2 ) + Rb (5 S 1/2 )]. The cross section is 3.79×10 −14 cm 2 ±45%.
