Abstract

The scheme of the self-referenced continuous-variable quantum key distribution (SR CV-QKD) has been experimentally demonstrated. However, because of the finite dynamics of Alice's amplitude modulator, there will be an extra excess noise that is proportional to the amplitude of the reference pulse, while the maximal transmission distance of this scheme is positively correlated with the amplitude of the reference pulse. Therefore, there is a trade-off between the maximal transmission distance and the amplitude of the reference pulse. In this paper, we propose the scheme of SR CV-QKD with virtual photon subtraction, which not only has no need for the use of a high intensity reference pulse to improve the maximal transmission distance, but also has no demand of adding complex physical operations to the original self-referenced scheme. Compared to the original scheme, our simulation results show that a considerable extension of the maximal transmission distance can be obtained when using a weak reference pulse, especially for one-photon subtraction. We also find that our scheme is sensible with the detector's electronic noise at reception. A longer maximal transmission distance can be achieved for lower electronic noise. Moreover, our scheme has a better toleration of excess noise compared to the original self-referenced scheme, which implies the advantage of using virtual photon subtraction to increase the maximal tolerable excess noise for distant users. These results suggest that our scheme can make the SR CV-QKD from the laboratory possible for practical metropolitan area application.

Improving the Maximum Transmission Distance of Self-Referenced Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution Using a Noiseless Linear Amplifier

Yijun Wang, Xudong Wang, Duan Huang +1 more

We show that a noiseless linear amplifier (NLA) can be placed properly at the receiver’s end to improve the performance of self-referenced (SR) continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) when the reference pulses are weak. In SR CV-QKD, the imperfections of the amplitude modulator limit the maximal amplitude of the reference pulses, while the performance of SR CV-QKD is positively related to the amplitude of the reference pulses. An NLA can compensate the impacts of large phase noise introduced by the weak reference pulses. Simulation results derived from collective attacks show that this scheme can improve the performance of SR CV-QKD with weak reference pulses, in terms of extending maximum transmission distance. An NLA with a gain of g can increase the maximum transmission distance by the equivalent of 20log10g dB of losses.

Improvement of self-referenced continuous-variable quantum key distribution with quantum photon catalysis

Wei Ye, Hai Zhong, Qin Liao +3 more

Quantum photon-catalysis operations can be utilized for improving the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) systems. Motivated by characteristics of quantum photon-catalysis operations that can be implemented by the existing technologies, we consider the performance improvement of self-referenced (SR) CVQKD involving zero-photon catalysis operation. We find that the zero-photon catalysis can be regarded as a noiseless attenuation, and the numerical simulations show that the zero-photon catalysis (ZPC)-based SR-CVQKD scheme outperforms the original SR-CVQKD scheme. In addition, to highlight the advantage of applying zero-photon catalysis operation into SR-CVQKD systems, we make a comparison about the performances between the ZPC-based SR-CVQKD scheme and the previous single-photon subtraction (SPS)-based SR-CVQKD scheme. Numerical simulations show that the ZPC-based SR-CVQKD is superior to the single-photon subtraction case with respect to the transmission distance and the tolerable excess noise. Especially, the ZPC-based SR-CVQKD allows the lower quantum detection efficiency and the higher electronic noise to achieve the same performance. These results show that the proposed protocol is expected to provide theoretical reference for the practical application of SR-CVQKD in metropolitan areas.

Non-Gaussian postselection and virtual photon subtraction in continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Zhengyu Li, Yichen Zhang, Xiangyu Wang +3 more

Photon subtraction can enhance the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD). However, the enhancement effect will be reduced by the imperfections of practical devices, especially the limited efficiency of a single-photon detector. In this paper, we propose a non-Gaussian postselection method to emulate the photon substraction used in coherent-state CV QKD protocols. The virtual photon subtraction not only can avoid the complexity and imperfections of a practical photon-subtraction operation, which extends the secure transmission distance as the ideal case does, but also can be adjusted flexibly according to the channel parameters to optimize the performance. Furthermore, our preliminary tests on the information reconciliation suggest that in the low signal-to-noise ratio regime, the performance of reconciliating the postselected non-Gaussian data is better than that of the Gaussian data, which implies the feasibility of implementing this method practically.

Plug-and-play dual-phase-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with photon subtraction

Xiaodong Wu, Yijun Wang, Hai Zhong +2 more

Plug-and-play dual-phase-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) protocol can effectively solve the security loopholes associated with transmitting local oscillator (LO). However, this protocol has larger excess noise compared with one-way Gaussian-modulated coherent-states scheme, which limits the maximal transmission distance to a certain degree. In this paper, we show a reliable solution for this problem by employing non-Gaussian operation, especially, photon subtraction operation, which provides a way to improve the performance of plug-and-play dual-phase-modulated CVQKD protocol. The photon subtraction operation shows experimental feasibility in the plug-andplay configuration since it can be implemented under current technology. Security results indicate that the photon subtraction operation can evidently enhance the maximal transmission distance of the plug-and-play dual-phase-modulated CVQKD protocol, which effectively makes up the drawback of the original one. Furthermore, we achieve the tighter bound of the transmission distance by considering the finite-size effect, which is more practical compared with that achieved in the asymptotic limit.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution based on high-rate phase reference

Jinjing Shi, Fang Zhou, Shuhui Chen +2 more

Abstract We propose a high-rate phase reference scheme for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD). In this scheme, a transmission mode has been employed in which several quantum signal pulses are accompanied by a pair of reference pulses, calibrating the measurement bases of the communicating parties. Within a certain range, and with the ratio between quantum signal pulses and reference pulses increased, the secret key rate approaches that of the traditional CV-QKD scheme (which is a scheme without phase noise). Compared with general CV-QKD schemes, which adopt the transmission mode of a quantum signal pulse plus a pair of reference pulses, this scheme has a higher spectral efficiency, enabling high-rate CV-QKD. In addition, we reduce the interference of strong reference pulses with weak quantum signal pulses by using a pair of polarization beam splitters with a dynamic polarization controller. Simulation results demonstrate that we achieve a higher secret key rate than the self-coherent phase reference scheme. This provides a pathway towards large-scale quantum communication networks.

Continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with virtual photon subtraction

Yijia Zhao, Yichen Zhang, Bingjie Xu +2 more

The method of improving the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocols by postselection has been recently proposed and verified. In continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI QKD) protocols, the measurement results are obtained from untrusted third party Charlie. There is still not an effective method of improving CV-MDI QKD by the postselection with untrusted measurement. We propose a method to improve the performance of coherent-state CV-MDI QKD protocol by virtual photon subtraction via non-Gaussian postselection. The non-Gaussian postselection of transmitted data is equivalent to an ideal photon subtraction on the two-mode squeezed vacuum state, which is favorable to enhance the performance of CV-MDI QKD. In CV-MDI QKD protocol with non-Gaussian postselection, two users select their own data independently. We demonstrate that the optimal performance of the renovated CV-MDI QKD protocol is obtained with the transmitted data only selected by Alice. By setting appropriate parameters of the virtual photon subtraction, the secret key rate and tolerable excess noise are both improved at long transmission distance. The method provides an effective optimization scheme for the application of CV-MDI QKD protocols.
