Entanglement property in matrix product spin systems

Jing-Min Zhu

We study the entanglement property in matrix product spin-ring systems systemically by von Neumann entropy. We find that: (i) the Hilbert space dimension of one spin determines the upper limit of the maximal value of the entanglement entropy of one spin, while for multiparticle entanglement entropy, the upper limit of the maximal value depends on the dimension of the representation matrices. Based on the theory, we can realize the maximum of the entanglement entropy of any spin block by choosing the appropriate control parameter values. (ii) When the entanglement entropy of one spin takes its maximal value, the entanglement entropy of an asymptotically large spin block, i.e. the renormalization group fixed point, is not likely to take its maximal value, and so only the entanglement entropy S n of a spin block that varies with size n can fully characterize the spin-ring entanglement feature. Finally, we give the entanglement dynamics, i.e. the Hamiltonian of the matrix product system.

Deviations from random-matrix entanglement statistics for kicked quantum chaotic spin- 1 / 2 chains

Tabea Herrmann, Roland Brandau, Arnd Bäcker

It is commonly expected that for quantum chaotic many body systems, the statistical properties approach those of random matrices when increasing the system size. We demonstrate for various kicked spin-1/2 chain models that the average eigenstate entanglement indeed approaches the random matrix result. However, the distribution of the eigenstate entanglement differs significantly. While for autonomous systems such deviations are expected, they are surprising for the more scrambling kicked systems. Similar deviations occur in a tensor-product random matrix model with all-to-all interactions. Therefore, we attribute the origin of the deviations for the kicked spin-1/2 chain models to the tensor-product structure of the Hilbert spaces. As a consequence, this would mean that such many body systems cannot be described by the standard random matrix ensembles.

Renormalization and tensor product states in spin chains and lattices

J. I. Cirac, Frank Verstraete

We review different descriptions of many-body quantum systems in terms of tensor product states. We introduce several families of such states in terms of the known renormalization procedures, and show that they naturally arise in that context. We concentrate on matrix product states, tree tensor states, multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz and projected entangled pair states. We highlight some of their properties, and show how they can be used to describe a variety of systems.
