Universal Properties of Many-Body Localization Transitions in Quasiperiodic Systems

Shi‐Xin Zhang, Hong Yao

The precise nature of many-body localization (MBL) transitions in both random and quasiperiodic (QP) systems remains elusive so far. In particular, whether MBL transitions in QP and random systems belong to the same universality class or two distinct ones has not been decisively resolved. Here, we investigate MBL transitions in one-dimensional (d=1) QP systems as well as in random systems by state-of-the-art real-space renormalization group (RG) calculation. Our real-space RG shows that MBL transitions in 1D QP systems are characterized by the critical exponent ν≈2.4, which respects the Harris-Luck bound (ν>1/d) for QP systems. Note that ν≈2.4 for QP systems also satisfies the Harris-Chayes-Chayes-Fisher-Spencer bound (ν>2/d) for random systems, which implies that MBL transitions in 1D QP systems are stable against weak quenched disorder since randomness is Harris irrelevant at the transition. We shall briefly discuss experimental means to measure ν of QP-induced MBL transitions.

Properties and applications of one dimensional quasiperiodic lattices

Yucheng Wang, Xiong-Jun Liu, Shu Chen

Quasiperiodic lattices have been widely studied in cold atoms, which make one study extended-Anderson localization transition in one-dimensional (1D) or two-dimensional (2D) systems. In 2008, Inguscio's group prepared one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattice in cold atomic system and observed Anderson localization, which promoted the theoretical and experimental studies of quasiperiodic systems. Later, Bloch's group observed the many body localization in their prepared 1D and 2D quasiperiodic lattices. Recently, they also successfully observed the mobility edge and many body localization in a system with mobility edge in quasiperiodic lattices. These cold atom experiments have promoted the researches of many body localization and mobility edge. Quasiperiodic lattices have become a platform and its effects on many physical phenomena are being extensively studied, which can be expectantly observed in cold atomic experiments. This paper is based on the authors' some related work and briefly review some recent studies on the 1D quasiperiodic lattices, including some important cold atom experiments, some important properties of the quasiperiodic lattices and their effects on some physical phenomena, such as topological states.

Interaction-enhanced many-body localization in a 1D quasiperiodic model with long-range hopping

Fan, Haowei, Ke Huang, Xiao Li

We study the many-body localization (MBL) transition in an 1D exactly solvable system with long-range hopping and quasiperiodic on-site potential introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 186303 (2023). Unlike other disorder or quasiperiodic model, an interaction-enhanced MBL happens in the moderate interaction regime, which is dubbed as the interaction-enhanced MBL. This counterintuitive phenomenon can be understood by noticing the fragility of the critical band lying at the bottom of the spectrum. The fragile band is localized by other localized states once the interaction is turned on. This mechanism can be verified by introducing a mean-field theory description which can derive highly excited states with high accuracy. The effectiveness of this mean-field theory is captured by the quasihole physics, validated by the particle entanglement spectra.
