Character of motional modes for entanglement and sympathetic cooling of mixed-species trapped-ion chains

Ksenia Sosnova, A. Carter, Christopher R. Monroe

Modular mixed-species ion-trap networks are a promising framework for scalable quantum information processing, where one species acts as a memory qubit and another as a communication qubit. This architecture requires high-fidelity mixed-species entangling gates to transfer information from communication to memory qubits through their collective motion. We investigate the character of the motional modes of mixed-species ion chains of various lengths and in various trap potentials for entangling operations and sympathetic cooling. We find that the laser power required for high-fidelity entangling gates based on transverse modes is at least an order of magnitude higher than that for gates based on axial modes for ion species with a large mass ratio. We also find that for even moderate mass differences, the transverse modes are much harder to cool than the axial modes regardless of the ion chain configuration. Therefore, transverse modes conventionally used for operations in single-species ion chains may not be well suited for mixed-species chains with widely different masses.

Quantum reservoirs with ion chains

Bruno G. Taketani, Thomás Fogarty, E. Kajari +2 more

Ion chains are promising platforms for studying and simulating quantum reservoirs. One interesting feature is that their vibrational modes can mediate entanglement between two objects which are coupled through the vibrational modes of the chain. In this work we analyze entanglement between the transverse vibrations of two heavy impurity defects embedded in an ion chain, which is generated by the coupling with the chain vibrations. We verify general scaling properties of the defect dynamics and demonstrate that entanglement between the defects can be a stationary feature of these dynamics. We then analyze entanglement in chains composed of tens of ions and propose a measurement scheme which allows one to verify the existence of the predicted entangled state.

Entanglement and Tunable Spin-Spin Couplings between Trapped Ions Using Multiple Transverse Modes

Kihwan Kim, M.-S. Chang, Rajibul Islam +3 more

We demonstrate tunable spin-spin couplings between trapped atomic ions, mediated by laser forces on multiple transverse collective modes of motion. A sigma_{x}sigma_{x}-type Ising interaction is realized between quantum bits stored in the ground hyperfine clock states of ;{171}Yb;{+} ions. We demonstrate entangling gates and tailor the spin-spin couplings with two and three trapped ions. The use of closely spaced transverse modes provides a new class of interactions relevant to quantum computing and simulation with large collections of ions in a single crystal.
