Dynamic Spatiotemporal Speed Control of Ultrashort Pulses in Quantum-Dot SOAs

Edeltraud Gehrig, M. van der Poel, Jesper Mørk +2 more

We present theoretical and experimental results on the propagation of ultrashort pulses in quantum-dot (QD) laser amplifiers. The propagation time of the light pulses is controlled by the pulse itself (self-induced speed control) or by injection of a second pump pulse (external speed control). Our simulations on the basis of spatially and temporally resolved QD Maxwell-Bloch equations reveal that the excitation and relaxation dynamics induced by the propagating pulse or a pump pulse within the active charge carrier system leads to a complex gain and index dynamics that may either speed up or slow down the propagating light pulse. The physical effects allowing for the dynamic speed control could be ascribed to complex (coherent and incoherent) level dynamics leading to dynamic gain saturation and index dispersion. The dependence of the propagation time on injection current density and pulse energy is discussed. The numerical results of pulse reshaping and propagation times in the gain and absorptions regime are compared to experimental results

All-Optical Coherent Control of Spin Dynamics in Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Gabriela M. Slavcheva, Ortwin G. Hess

A new model for rigorous theoretical description of circularly (elliptically) polarized ultrashort optical pulse interactions with singly charged quantum dots embedded in semiconductor optical waveguides and microcavities is proposed. The method is based on self-consistent solution in the time domain of the vector Maxwell equations coupled via microscopic polarization to the coherent time-evolution equations of a discrete N-level quantum system in terms of the real pseudospin (coherence) vector. The model is applied to a 4-level system describing the optical dipole transitions of the trion state in a singly charged quantum dot. Selective optical excitation of specific spin states by predefined helicity of the optical field and an onset of self-induced transparency and polarized soliton formation in the nonlinear regime are numerically demonstrated

Rabi oscillations in a semiconductor quantum dot: Influence of local fields

Gregory Ya. Slepyan, A. Magyarov, С. А. Максименко +2 more

The influence of electron-hole dipole-dipole interactions (local fields) on the excitonic Rabi oscillations in an isolated quantum dot (QD) has been theoretically investigated. An analysis for the QD interaction with monochromatic field and ultrashort Gaussian pulse has been performed. On the basis of optical Bloch equations the Rabi oscillation dynamics has been investigated. As a result, the bifurcation and essentially anharmonic regimes in the Rabi oscillations in a QD exposed to the monochromatic field have been predicted. The strong dependence of the period of Rabi oscillations on the QD depolarization has been revealed. For the Gaussian pulse it has been shown that the final state of inversion as a function of the pulse peak strength demonstrates step-like transitions.
