A new form of SU(2) coherent state path integrals based on arbitrary starting vectors

Abstract

We develop the formulation of the spin(SU(2)) coherent state path integrals based on arbitrary starting vectors. The resultant action in the path integral expression extensively depends on the vector; it differs from the conventional one in that it has a generalized form having some additional terms. We also study, as physical applications, the geometric phases associated with the CS path integrals to find that new effects of the terms may appear in experiments.

SU(2) COHERENT STATE PATH INTEGRALS LABELED BY A FULL SET OF EULER ANGLES: BASIC FORMULATION

MASAO MATSUMOTO

We develop a basic formulation of the spin (SU(2)) coherent state path integrals based not on the conventional highest or lowest weight vectors but on arbitrary fiducial vectors. The coherent states, being defined on a 3-sphere, are specified by a full set of Euler angles. They are generally considered as states without classical analogues. The overcompleteness relation holds for the states, by which we obtain the time evolution of general systems in terms of the path integral representation; the resultant Lagrangian in the action has a monopole-type term à la Balachandran et al. as well as some additional terms, both of which depend on fiducial vectors in a simple way. The process of the discrete path integrals to the continuous ones is clarified. Complex variable forms of the states and path integrals are also obtained. During the course of all steps, we emphasize the analogies and correspondences to the general canonical coherent states and path integrals that we proposed some time ago. In this paper we concentrate on the basic formulation. The physical applications as well as criteria in choosing fiducial vectors for real Lagrangians, in relation to fictitious monopoles and geometric phases, will be treated in subsequent papers separately.

A natural extension of coherent state path integrals

Masao Matsumoto

We develop the formulation of the path integrals via the coherent states based on general starting vectors. In this paper we treat the case of the ordinary canonical (Heisenberg-Weyl) coherent state. We find that an additional term appears in the action in the path integral expression. Geometric phases associated with the path integrals, including the possibilities of the experimental detection, are also discussed.

SU(2) coherent-state path integral for the Heisenberg ferromagnet

E. A. Kochetov

The SU(2) coherent-state path-integral representation is used to derive a fairly explicit expression for the partition function ${\mathit{Z}}_{0}$[\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}] of noninteracting quantum spins in the presence of an arbitrary time-dependent external field \ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}. By performing then the standard Gaussian average of ${\mathit{Z}}_{0}$[\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}] over \ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow} the partition function of the ferromagnetically coupled Heisenberg model is represented in a way which allows one to simplify the derivation of results such as obtained by Leibler and Orland [Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) 132, 277 (1981)] and to generalize them to arbitrary spin quantum number.

Coherent states, path integral, and semiclassical approximation

Kunio Funahashi, Tarō Kashiwa, Seiji Sakoda +1 more

Using the generalized coherent states it is shown that the path integral formulas for SU(2) and SU(1,1) (in the discrete series) are WKB exact, if it is started from the trace of e−iTĤ, where Ĥ is given by a linear combination of generators. In this case, the WKB approximation is achieved by taking a large ‘‘spin’’ limit: J,K→∞, under which it is found that each coefficient vanishes except the leading term which indeed gives the exact result. It is further pointed out that the discretized form of path integral is indispensable, in other words, the continuum path integral expression sometimes leads to a wrong result. Therefore great care must be taken when some geometrical action would be adopted, even if it is so beautiful as the starting ingredient of path integral. Discussions on generalized coherent states are also presented both from geometrical and simple oscillator (Schwinger boson) points of view.

A semiclassical treatment of path integrals for the spin system

Hiroshi Kuratsuji, Yutaka Mizobuchi

Starting with path integrals in the SU(2) coherent state representation, the semiclassical approximation of the propagator for the spin system is investigated. By extending the idea of the semiclassical expansion method, which was developed in the usual phase-space path integrals, to the path integrals in the curved phase space, which is characteristic of the SU(2) coherent states, we obtain a closed form for the semiclassical propagator. As an application, we discuss the semiclassical quantization condition for the spin system.
